Just got my iPhone 4 yesterday. No signal loss or dropped calls yet. Also cannot reproduce the antenna issue. What do you make of that?

Hold a finger on the black strip on the left side of the phone for 30 seconds. Tell us what happens.

...Apple will start including them in shipping boxes, according to an O2 sales rep in Ireland. In other words, the only redesign coming is to the box the phone is packaged in...so that it can accommodate cases/bumpers. Heard this on a CNET podcast where a listener called in.

Obviously i'm skeptical but i thought it was an interesting response. It kind of makes sense, its cheaper/less hassle to include a free case than to attempt a mid-cycle design alteration

That's basically what I figured all along... no one should believe a company would redesign hardware already in mass production due to a small non-life-threatening flaw.

I thought that would be the case...it gives plenty of lead time to the bumper/case manufacturers, too.

this makes so much sense! way more sense than anything else ive heard.. that would be a great idea, so hopefully people stop complaining... i, like most people havent had problems so far, and even if i did have a problem every now and then it would be worth it, theres no other phone i would rather have!

I really don't think Apple wants to keep giving away cases. I think they hope that by the end of September it will all blow over and they can stop. If an inexpensive hardware or software solution presents itself, they'll do that, but ultimately they don't want to give away free cases for the next year.

There are many opinions in this thread. Here is a fact, I went into the Apple Store in Del Monte Shopping Center. They had ten iPhone 4 on display. All displays were on 4.0 and displaying 5 bars.

I held six of the units in my left hand and browsed Safari for under one minute. At this time four of the units displayed 0 bars of service and two of the units had dropped to two bars of service. Within ten seconds of placing iPhone 4 in its cradle all 5 bars were restored and did not fluctuate.

How is my post about my iP4 any less of a fact than your posting?

Besides, the bars don't matter...... what matters is if the phone drops calls (or loses call quality).

By september the antenna issue will either be eliminated or massively surpressed.

Therefore no need to give them away anymore.

I doubt Apple will continue to give them away as part of the package. Shareholders would not be happy with that solution.

They've got 3 choices,

1) Modify the design so cases aren't needed - maybe not possible, or perhaps as simple as applying a lacquer to the antenna?
2) Extend the free case offer - costly to post them separately
3) Include a case in the box - would involve redesigning the packaging presumably

I think option 3 is the most likely, but like Steve Jobs said, they're keeping their options open until in the meantime.

Right...because shareholders would be really upset that Apple added a product to the iPhone 4 packaging that probably cost about $1 to produce

Actually because the problem would be fixed and therer would be no need to give away what can be sold.

Not a damn thing...

Sorry, but I think this entire antenna issue is completely over blown. Here is the thing: whether the bars drop is irrelevant. What matters is whether the calls are dropped and/or not received. Thus far I haven't seen any evidence that shows the iPhone not receiving calls, nor calls being dropped due to the antenna "issue." In fact, I have better luck reproducing the antenna "issue" on my Nokia flip phone... And even then it doesn't drop a call.

Software at the Genius Bar indicated that 11% of calls were dropped the first 3 weeks with iPhone 4 and no bumper. Personal experience.

I make of it, that you are in a particularly strong signal area. I have no antenna issues where I work. Death grip does nothing. But at home, I can death grip my 4 bars down to about 1 or 2.

It's all about how strong the signal is.

I did the same thing in my local Apple Store. I picked up 6 or 7 of the display units. I was able to drop them all from 5 bars to no bars just by lightly holding my finger over the bridge.

Then I got my own iPhone 4, and when I'm at work, I can't get any bars to drop.

Both facts. But it's not a case of not being able to have one without the other. Strong signal, you're golden. Less than ideal signal, you'll probably see some bar droppage. Simple as that.

Exactly. It's amazing to me that people still don't understand this concept.

I agree! This has been obvious to me since the problem first came up. Why do people act like the problem either exists or it doesn't? It depends on signal strength.
