Sorry, and with due respect to you, THAT is false. What is in the online store as defaults and what are carried as stock items in the store are NOT one and the same. There are certain build-outs of higher end models that, while not a "default" on the online store, are always sold as a "pre-built", in-stock SKUs in the stores. Two Apple store employees confirmed this for me without hesitation....

Now, it's possible that this is something (i.e. exactly what models/builds) that varies by region based on buying trends. That I can't say with certainty because I've never been to any stores outside of the several in my region.

Exactly. My AG 15" is the one of the is pre-built SKUs that are not purchasable from the online store. Refurbs are, in my opinion, completely random.

There is a difference between "pre-built" and "stock" or "standard". My statement is factual. Not all stores carry the same "pre-built" models, even though they do carry stock or standard models.

I think we were both wrong until clarified. :) It would be interesting to somehow find out what the "pre-builts" were in different regions....

For every one person who buys a customized configuration, 1000 people buy the default configuration.

Maybe my stats are off, but from what I see, people just buy default configs. A lot of people here like to customize, but we are the minority. Most people do not even know what the high res screen means.

It is going to be very hard to find that configuration in the refurbished store.

Just call the Apple Store. They stock the same units across the country.

And yes, they carry a stock AG unit. I've gotten several across multiple generations.

I used to not like the silver border on the anti glare but after having mine for a while I think the silver looks much nicer these days, also note the MBA has a silver bezel, which is the model apple claims is the notebook of the future or whatever. Plus AG is just such a nice screen

Yea, I'm actually warming up to it a little. I did notice that all the MBA's have the silver bezel so there's a good chance that we will see it on the redesigned MBP as well.

I could care less about glare though. I use a 24" Cinema Display with a window directly opposite from it and I've never been bothered by the reflections.

most apple stores carry this config, as they also carry the 13" air with 256GB SSD and i7, and the 11" air with 256gb SSD upgrade and the i7 upgrade...

if you want, say the 11" air with the 256GB and no i7 then they'll tell you its BTO and you can order it online, but you should be able to walk into any apple store and walk out with configs i listed above.

Just an update - I ended up purchasing a 15" AG model from the refurb store. I've already upgraded to 16GB RAM (1600 Mhz) and an SSD drive and this thing is crazy fast.

The silver border looks a whole lot better in person and since I have it connected to my Cinema Display most of the time, I rarely ever see it anyways. What I really enjoy is the AG screen - I've noticed that it is much easier on my eyes than the glossy screen on my Cinema Display. I've had issues with eye dryness for the last year (not sure if it's allergies or something else) but I immediately noticed a difference in the amount of strain on my eyes when looking at the matte display as compared to my Cinema Display. If you're holding out for a glossy display I would definitely try to check out an AG model in person if you can - the silver border looks really nice and the screen is excellent.

Overall, I'm very happy with my decision. My last upgrade will be replacing the superdrive with a HDD - this is actually one of the reasons I didn't wait for the MBP refresh because if it does have a slimmer design, there's a good chance there won't be space for two drives.
