Having read the thread it strikes me that Meister is on a bad run here.
Clearly he just wants a straight forward reliable mail client. It sounds like you are not overly demanding of mail clients either.

But you are still suffering issues on a too frequent basis.

If possible can you explain:

When do you get prompted for your credentials?
What is prompting you?
What OS are you running - there have been reports that Mavericks prompts for mail credentials (and I have seen this myself but can work around it)
What type of mail account are you creating in your mail client - IMAP, POP3, etc

Depending upon your responses we can probably start to work out where to focus next to step you forward to a resolution, or at least better understanding.

I don't think it is necessarily a particular mail client as you have had 3 or 4 and they are appear to cause problems. As stated above I suspect that there are some other core issues that need to be identified and resolved here.

I use the default mail app with both IMAP and POP3 accounts on Mavericks and actually don't experience anything like the issues you describe. I have got a quirk of mavericks (which may be the cause or not) whereby when I enter Internet Accounts I am prompted for passwords which I correctly give but which are rejected) but by simply loading the mail app and accessing accounts via preferences I can ignore the issue totally.

All the best,
Sam

Thank you Sam for taking the time to reply to my post.

I am using exclusively googlemail and yahoo mail. (several accounts with both)
All standard free mail accounts.

I use them on the systems in my signature:

Windows Phone 7.8
OS Mavericks up to date
iOS 7.x (newest version)
iOS 4.3.3

They all provide immediate support to setup the gmail and yahoo mail.
It never asked me for pop3 or impas. I dont bother with the details of the setup.

I had certificate problems from time to time with all accounts and systems
+ problems described in this thread.
Airmail has been somewhat tolerable but doesnt always send mails correctly.

My needs are very basic and Ive been using email accounts for 20 years now.
I always used them through the browser and Ive never had anything like this happen in 20 years!! I just started to use clients a few months ago cuz i thought it would be nice to have my mail offline.

I now went back to browser operation only because even though my mail needs are basic it is vital for my job that emails actually arrive and are sent correctly.

I use a lot of Lte and 3g connections on the go and tether my macbook to my ipad a lot.
Mail problems get worse then (probably caused by unsteady connections) but they are also there on wifi at home.

I use Postbox 3 and I really, really like it. I have absolutely no problems with it. It is not free but there is a free trial and if you like it, it's $10. It is a lot like Thunderbird in configuration but it is much more powerful and works much better (also better UI).

Also has an inbuilt RSS reader still too. :)

I'm afraid that Outlook has been flaky as heck for a long time now...I stopped using it, and I don't like Apple Mail either so have been a Thunderbird user for a couple of years now. It has all the tools you'd need and you simply bold them on..no overblown menus etc, and rock solid.

Thunderbitd is excellent and I have been using it extensively on Windows and various Limix distro's from AriOS to Zorin, with great success. It uses lots of RAM, though. It has excellent Gmail sync for calendars and contacts as well. And you can create keys to sign & encrypt emails. Free.

So you could vouche for thunderbird?

I need a reliable mail app or i just use the browser versions.

I have problems understanding why it should be so hard to program an app that pocesses email.

I am really wondring if i am doing something wrong. Outlook and the mail.app are some of the wost programs ive ever used. Y would other people use them?

Yahoo mail never satisfied but Gmail worked best of all. You just need to get to know it well and choose the correct settings.

I have my own domain and hosted by my ISP. my own hosted mail server is flawless and I can recommend going that route. Try services such as Hetzner as it is really very cheap and utterly reliable.

I am just starting to wonder what i am doing wrong
Outlook is terrible, apple mail sucks and thunderbird doesn't let me access all folders.

Y is it so hard to build a program that manages my email accounts?

I am not even doing anything unusually and yahoo and gmail are the most common providers.

Outlook actually is quite good. There is something amiss with your settings. In Gmail settings, be sure to activate POP and IMAP and also check "always use HTTPS" then both Outlook and Thunderbird will set it up automatically. Easy as pie.
