No Hardware Announcements at WWDC 2011? [Updated: No New iPhone Until FY 2012?]

No iPhone 5, but there will be iPhone invisio!

The iPhone 4 is already dated relative to other phones on the market. To have a phone on the market for 18 months without an update is insane.

ROTF. Dated. That must be why the recent mobile industry event that Apple didn't sponsor nor attend voted iPhone the best phone on the market.

Exactly. That's the main reason in my mind this rumour holds any weight.

If anything there are more Verizon customers waiting for the iPhone 5 than those who bought the iPhone 4. If they DON'T release the iPhone 5 this year there will be pissed off Verizon AND AT&T customers.

Verizon customers who waited for the iPhone but didn't want to buy an 'old' phone when a new one was coming out in a few months and AT&T customers who are looking to upgrade.

haha. Love people saying they will move phones if we don't see the new iphone this year.

Are people really that fed up with what they currently have?

I've a 3gs and it's plugging away quite nicely. I don't need a new phone but I would like one when it does come out.

I'm looking forward to lion and iPad giving me my Apple fix for the year. Why can't we just let Apple get it right instead of jumping all over them?

im the opposite, this would be devastating to me as my contract runs out June this year......

why would they do this? I would have thought the majority of people would be looking at upgrading in June due to the reasoning that more iPhone's are sold in June?

hope to god this isnt true.

Devastating?! OMG, how so? Let's just all chilax...if its true, life will still go on (unless your life force is intrinsically tied to Apple release schedules)

...Apple is starting to fall into the Valve-Time Vortex: incredible products teased at, and never released on time! *Mass Panic and Chaos

I agree. If theres no iPhone in 2011, that mean Android wins the smartphone market for the year. Apple would also lose many of the customers to Android whose contracts are up in the summer and they would be locked into 2 year deals with their droids meaning no iPhone in 2012 for them either.

Most phone consumers do not get a new phone on the day their contracts expire. That's yet another geek misconception about how the world works.

I'd be shocked if Apple loses "many" of their customers to Android in 2011. Why on earth would they switch when they already have an iPhone that they love?

Surely this just means the iPhone released in June will simply be like the iPhone 3G to 3GS transition. Same form factor, upgraded internals, etc… Hard to imagine there won't be an iPhone with an A5 this year.

A 'perfect' devices with a bad antenna design? Sorry, but I wouldn't touch the iPhone 4 because of its antenna design flaws and won't get an iPhone until Apple corrects that. Hardly perfect. Perfect for YOU maybe..

Have you ever used an iPhone 4 to justify your claims? Or are you just basing your decision on reports from the media vs real use?

I've had an iPhone (2G), iPhone 3GS, and now an iPhone 4. They have all dropped calls. The first gen iPhone dropped them most, the 3G improved and didn't drop as many and the iPhone 4 improved upon that.

Don't read everything you read.

Thats codswallop, even apple wouldn't be dim enough to allow such an opportunity to go by without at least something to offer to keep market share and tabloid inches filled.

No iPhone 5 = Lost customers.
No iMac refresh = Lost customers.
No iPod Touch refresh = Lost Customers
No ACD new addition = Lost customers.

etc etc. "b"ock and "c"all is what I say.

2012 could easily mean EARLY 2012. That would put the Verizon and AT&T phones on the same release schedule and also set a new precedent for revealing/releasing iPhones in the 1st quarter, WWDC focuses solely on software and operating systems, and the iPad being released in the 3rd/4th quarter (if the iPad 3 rumors pan out). And don't think for a minute that AT&T won't alter their upgrade eligibility dates to let people whose contracts expire this summer (without the release of a new iPhone) upgrade in 2012 for a subsidized price. They're doing everything they can to keep people from jumping ship.

If Apple waits till September, this would put the Verizon iPhone 6-7 months old and possibly release both NEW versions at the same time.

If Apple waits till Febraury, this would put the Verizon iPhone at 1 year old and release both NEW versions at the same time.

In Apple’s view, this is how the release schedule should be: releasing both versions at the same time so it's competition can't update their phones before the iPhone hits the Verizon network 6 months later.

Say what you want about hardware issues, etc... They are trying to sync up the release schedules for both iPhone versions.

Sounds like a plan

I could see this happening. It would make sense to me to try and consolidate their iOS devices to one release cycle. iPod and iPhones are fairly close as it is, mid-summer and early fall. Would it be a big shock to move the new kid iPad and it's older siblings into one release? No.

Hummm.... if they wait until the fall, then people like me who got their iPhone on day 1 may be eligible for an early upgrade. Could be a stroke of genius by Apple again.

Use new OS things to carry us through the summer and give us new hardware goodies in the fall with volumes ramped up to handle demand as opposed to cutting it so close like they have in the past.

I don't think Apple is stupid... so I expect they have a plan that will make us all happy by the end of the year. Besides... iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are both very competitive products and a new iOS will keep them fresh for a while more while the hardware is sorted out.

I think this could be a good thing more than a bad.

I can not wait any longer, I need a new Iphone this summer! Please Apple do not make me wait any longer, my white 3gs is beginning to turn gray and the back is destroyed by my standards. Please bring back the metal backing, the mock up that looks like a mini ipad 3g would be outstanding!

who comes up with this

This is probably one of the silliest rumors I have heard, I agree with most of you that my iphone 4 is still magical as ever, but for apple to wait that long to update one of its biggest revenue producers. Especially when competitors are releasing new phones quite often. There is no way this rumor holds true

I'll give you that. I should have said "some." In any case, I still think it's something to consider.

It may be an iPhone 4 release this year and an iPhone 5 next year. Personally I think the iPhone 4 could be faster but what else can you do to the device in terms of hardware that would make it more attractive to other 95% of non geeks that use the phone? No much would be the answer.

However, improved software will go a long way to give users a better experience using the system. I hope things like notification, syncing and perhaps a general interface refresh is coming to iOS 5. Also wouldn't mind an updated camera app with white balance and shutter speed control.

In terms of the iOS API I think Apple will probably have quite a few surprises in store for us.

I think the Tick Tock release schedule that Intel setup really makes a lot of sense for Apple as well. One version to introduce an idea and one version to optimise the idea. (see 3G to 3G, iPad to iPad 2 and perhaps 4 to 4)

Surely this just means the iPhone released in June will simply be like the iPhone 3G to 3GS transition. Same form factor, upgraded internals, etc… Hard to imagine there won't be an iPhone with an A5 this year.

Ding Ding Ding....We Have a Winner!!!
Those individuals quoted in the article aren't seeing new pieces produced for the iphone 5 because the form factor will likely be the same as the current phone. I would expect a speed bump with the implementation of the A5 chip.

I am a current VZW Blackberry Tour customer. I'm currently eligible to upgrade to iPhone 4 (Verizon has gone well out of its way to make me aware of this). My patience has truly been tested, as I've been assuming all along that iPhone 5 would be coming out in June.

So what the hell do I do now? I'm not waiting until 2012.

My 2-year contract finishes next month and my 3G is almost inoperative. No way I want to buy into the antenna problems with a 4. Glad you're happy though.

You can always pick up a used 4 to hold you over.
And the 'antenna problems' were a media and hater frenzy, nothing more.

Personally, I'm glad that I won't have to churn on upgrading for a few months more. Fact is that my 4 does everything I need short of NFR, and I don't really NEED that.
As a user, I'd be glad to use my 4 for another year.
As an AAPL holder, I'd like to see a 5 come out simply to kick the Verizon sales in the butt.
