Why shouldn't Apple include them on what is billed as an iPod?

Because I suspect most of them end up in landfills.

I know many, many people with iPhones. I can't think of a single time I've seen ANY of them use the earbuds. (I think I use mine once or twice a year, maybe.)

Sure, some folks out there do use them. Shouldn't we let those people get them because they want them and save the rest of us from more trash in our junk-drawers?

I see far more people using white earbuds than other types of headphones. Well except for hipsters with full cans.

I'm paying a lot for my iWhatevers and I expect free headphones with them. If you're so worried about landfills just offer them for free on CL.

I'd never even contemplate having those in my ears, the discomfort would be unpleasant.

Couldn't care less had they included them; would simply collect dust.

I don't consider them to be uncomfortable.

Really?

And when you argued that "giving something away means it won't eventually end up in a landfill" you considered that a sound logical argument? What happens to them, then?

The ridiculous counter argument would be that since almost all iPads will end up in landfills at some point Apple shouldn't make them. See how silly that sounds?

Yes, my headphones will eventually end up in landfills, but I get a lot of use out of them and are replaced when they eventually break. My point was that if they come with headphones, and you don't use them, you should give them away so they will get used before they end up in the trash.

Yes really.

Argumentum ad Lazarum isn't winning too many arguments either.

The fact of the matter is that Apple priced the iPad at the very low end of people's expectations for the device. (I specifically remember people speculating it was gonig to cost a thousand dollars are more.)

In order to do this, and thereby redefine the entire market for tablet computers, Apple's designers, engineers, and marketers had to look at literally every item that went into the iPad. And they determined that iBuds weren't providing sufficient value to the prospective consumer to justify the additional cost. Note also, this isn't the ONLY tough choice they had to make: they had to decide not to put in USB ports, or support Flash, or build the things in factories in South Carolina. All things that SOME people on this forum wail about on a daily basis.

The iPad has to rank as one of the most succesful new tech devices in the last decade or so. I think that expresses a more accurate judgement than any individual's personal opinion of what they should - or shouldn't - have put in the box.

If you can find me someone who bought an iPad with the intention of putting it in a drawer and never using it then I'll agree with you.

Because that's what happened to most earbuds I know.

So do you know a lot of people like that?

Most people I know with iPhones use their buds so, much like the iPhones and iPads, they are not collecting dust.

Our arguments are based on observations not factual research. I'll concede that if the majority of earbuds go unused then no they should not be included in the box, but if the majority of buds are used then I think they should be included in the box.

So have you given your and all your friends' earbuds away? I hear they're just going to end up in landfills.

And I think there are enough people who would use included headphone to justify including them.

When people are given something they tend to use it, even more so if they pay a lot of money for said item.

The question Apple asked is not "how many people will use these" but "how many people will miss these if we don't include them"

And the answer is not a lot.

I wouldn't have minded a pair as I could have sold them with my iPhone when I upgrade and I could get a few extra bucks since I have a new pair of headphones. But that is about all I do with my Apple earbuds.

I wonder if Steve jobs uses the little buds, knowing his humble and modest mentality he'd be complacent with those.

I find it interesting that defenders of the policy are more than happy to call the OEM Apple earbuds that come with the iPods and iPhones . . . well, crappy . . . in both wearing comfort and sonic qualities and seemingly take that as being okay, as if we shouldn't expect Apple to put any effort into them.

Then there's the opinion that the iPad doesn't need them since it has a built in speaker . . . much like the iPhone and iPad Touch . . . and we know how sonically accurate those are . . .

I was just thinking why my iPad 2 came without headphones. It does function as as iPod as well, so why didn't Apple add them in the box?

It can also output video to a tv, should it come with a tv?

The iPad is quite multi-purpose and would require a lot of accessories to perform all the functions it can do.

god these forums need a quick reply!

People tend to buy their own headphones for one, and two the Ipad, especially the Ipad 2 has pretty loud speakers anyway so unless your on a plane or in a crowded room then theres no reason to wear headphones.

Other iOS devices can output video . . . but they come with earbuds.
