The funny thing is they copied OS X with Windows 10 and said they will never change the number. Then Apple changed it to macOS 11.
Apple had to change to MacOS 11 eventually. They were running out of large cats to name after.

Plus, I am sure some marketing firm was telling them, “But you are alienating dog lovers with cats naming only”.

The year naming makes perfect sense. With different OS’s on different versions, it was becoming a chore just to remember when tvOS 2 or iOS 13 were.

This is assuming Apple will release new OS versions for every OS’s they have each year. This will make it a lot easier to manage and understand how old your mom’s iPhone iOS is on when you help them with Settings.

I bet it was SIRI who came up with the suggestion
🤣🤣
Hopefully, Siri will then suggest renaming phones & iPads the same way so we can easily calculate our upgrade & replacements: value ratio.🤔

With the design overhaul that's coming this year, Apple plans to rename all of its operating systems, reports Bloomberg. Going forward, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS will be identified by year, rather than by version number. We're not going to be getting iOS 19, we're getting iOS 26.

iOS 26 will be accompanied by iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26 instead of iPadOS 19, macOS 16, tvOS 19, watchOS 12, and visionOS 3.

Changing the name of the operating systems will introduce consistency across the lineup, rather than having several disparate numbers that don't match up. Apple is using vehicle-style numbering for operating systems and choosing the number of the upcoming year, so it'll be iOS 26 instead of iOS 25 because the update will be available across both 2025 and 2026.

The names will reflect a new effort by Apple to provide a more unified design across operating systems on different devices. The refreshed visionOS-like design update is coming to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

Apple plans to announce the new naming scheme at the Worldwide Developers Conference that's set to begin on Monday, June 9.

I think it would be really great if Apple finally adapted the software versions to the year of release. So you always know whether the software is up to date. Especially when you get a refreshed iphone, ipad, AW, macbook and so on without knowing or having to research which software is currently up to date.
I'm also of the opinion that Apple doesn't have to bring out new software every year. They would be better off improving the existing version so that it runs without bugs. Then there is no danger that the developers will include the existing bugs in the new update. Sometimes less is more...

If they’re really planning this “big” overhaul, then they better grab a pen and take notes on what actually needs to be included 😂

As Apple looks ahead to iOS 26, it may be time to consider implementing more substantial changes. At this stage, prioritizing user feedback and incorporating widely requested features could make a significant difference in user satisfaction and innovation.🤣🤣🤣

Wouldn’t it have been better to call it iPhoneOS 26 instead of iOS 26?
iOS no longer fits properly given we have iPadOS, watchOS, macOS, tvOS and so on.

iOS has a nicer ring to it than both iPhone and iPadOS though. But yeah logically it doesn't really fit anymore.

Really, hundreds of comments over something as minor as a version sequence change? There are much bigger issues in this world.
While true, people still get worked up over Coke & Pepsi, Chevy & Ford, Coffee &
Tea, etc. Sometimes a smaller obsession is a sanity check to the World we live in.

Then perhaps we all need to start having higher standards. I'd classify iOS 18 as about as reliable as Windows ME.

Apple desperately needs a reset. If this is as good as it's ever going to get again, we should all be switching to Android.
That’s why I’m still on iOS 17.

Did they not call one of the iPads ‘the new ipad’. I thought that was genius.

Sorry for the AI slob and mind it might me wrong (DuckAI with Mistral Small 3):
Grrrr … don’t remind me of that betrayal. That stunt of theirs cost them 5+ years of iPad sales. That was the day Apple lost almost all of their credibility and trust they had earned. It took them until the iPad Pro to gain some of it back. I argue that they still haven’t, and that’s why iPads have never had large success. Enough of us iPad 3rd gen people still remember and it still burns.

Apple themselves has a long memory, but so do us iPad 3rd gen’ers.

Honestly it makes sense. I do think Samsung did one thing right by naming their phones now after the year they came out (S25, etc.). Nobody remembers what year the iPhone 14 came out, why not make it easy for everyone for both hardware and software?
Great point and well explained! ;)
I thought the idea/concept sounded crazy but it makes sense to make it easier to remember what year your phone was released.
