iPhones get released in September, at the same time as the new iOS versions. What makes you think they'd name the phones one year, and iOS a different year? The iPhone released in September of 2026, will be called iPhone 2027, just like that release of iOS will be iOS 2027. It's not that complicated. So the iPhone (2026) will be running IOS (27), what braindead idiot thought this up?
Just keep it to the release date.
The aim is to make it consistent across the new lineup of converging platforms. So they wanna make it consistent with the year.... so they release version 26 ... in 2025.
Ok I guess?
Products are launched for the following year. It is natural to reflect that in the naming convention used.Honestly if they are updating it based on year then I think it should be 25. When we look back it could be confusing which OS came out at which time. For example iOS 26 actually came out in ‘25. If they are looking to update the numbering to alleviate confusion I don’t think this quite fixes it.
How tho? It makes perfect sense to go along with the year. What a completely baffling and bad idea.
Not sure about them, but for our product we release in September and use the upcoming year instead of the current because there are only 3 months left in the current year when releasing, with 9 months in the next year until the next version comes out.Why would they choose the upcoming year and not the year of release? That makes barely more sense than just having iOS 19
Greenland was the original bait and switch marketing.Think they got the names mixed up is the story I was told but they ended up keeping it as the locals liked it
Windows 95 all over again?
With the design overhaul that's coming this year, Apple plans to rename all of its operating systems, reports Bloomberg. Going forward, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and visionOS will be identified by year, rather than by version number. We're not going to be getting iOS 19, we're getting iOS 26.

iOS 26 will be accompanied by iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, watchOS 26, and visionOS 26 instead of iPadOS 19, macOS 16, tvOS 19, watchOS 12, and visionOS 3.
Changing the name of the operating systems will introduce consistency across the lineup, rather than having several disparate numbers that don't match up. Apple is using vehicle-style numbering for operating systems and choosing the number of the upcoming year, so it'll be iOS 26 instead of iOS 25 because the update will be available across both 2025 and 2026.
The names will reflect a new effort by Apple to provide a more unified design across operating systems on different devices. The refreshed visionOS-like design update is coming to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.
Apple plans to announce the new naming scheme at the Worldwide Developers Conference that's set to begin on Monday, June 9.

You don't care about the world we leave behind for future generations? I don't want them to have to live through the horror of Y2K!Who cares, all of us will be dead by then
Yeah, seriouslyApple has something against the number "9". No iPhone 9, and now renaming iOS 19. Makes sense though.
Yeah, I don't get it eitherWhy are people mad about this? It does make sense, and it would also make sense to name the iphone/ipad/mac by year.
With that said, it should be '25.
Apple skipped the 9 and no one really had a problem with it.As if skipping iPhone numbers wasn’t enough
Ironically your comment lacks innovation.“Can’t innovate my—“ You know the rest.
