To me, it tells me each OS is getting major changes to justify this new naming scheme which would line up with the rumors. I don’t think it's entirely necessary to rename them like that, I’d much prefer to see it as iOS (2026) instead of iOS 26.

It's all marketing, and doesn’t really matter too much anyways. As long as my devices still work, I don't really care what the OS is called.

Very surprised. If this is how it is going to be named, it might not be far off before Apple decides to rename the numbering scheme of iPhones.

So iPhone 17 with iOS 26 😆 and no intelligence and a crap Siri.….. Apple need a kick up the ass and get back to leading the field.…

Thats it.. Launch Android Version 1 MILLION!

So why isn't the OS that is being released in 2025, called IOS 25? IOS 26 seems more confusing. Are they calling it 26, because the will end-of-life it in 2026? Odd...

so they used to do this way back in the day with stuff like iLife:

if it is iOS '26 with the apostrophe, it makes it more clear that its the release year.

otherwise jumping to "version 26" does feel a little cringe, especially with where we are right now with bugginess, delayed features, and a superficial paint job as the rumoured headlining feature.

So the 1st generation of Apple Vision Pro will support visionOS 26? 26 years of software support certainly makes the price tag a little bit more justified! /s

It’s smart that they did this as a controlled leak. I actually like Gurman, but he’s certainly being used. That’s not a bad thing.

Anyway, here’s a selfie I took while reading the article. IMG_2891.jpeg

Apple has something against the number "9". No iPhone 9, and now renaming iOS 19. Makes sense though.
Well, they did have a Mac OS 9. How I miss that operating system. The current macOS is far superior but I’m just nostalgic I guess.

So the year-based version number would feel ‘current’ for all of three-and-a-bit months?

It also feels very Microsoft around the 90s.

Ick.

Apple is using vehicle-style numbering for operating systems and choosing the number of the upcoming year, so it'll be iOS 26 instead of iOS 25 because the update will be available across both 2025 and 2026.
I'm not sure about "vehicle-style" numbering; it seems more likely that it's just in line with Apple's fiscal year calendar (October-September).
