I'm not sure about "vehicle-style" numbering; it seems more likely that it's just in line with Apple's fiscal year calendar (October-September).

Makes no sense either way.

It doesn't match with Apple's fiscal calendar either. When iOS 19/26 launches, it'll still be FY25 for Apple.

Only reason is marketing.

Love it! Sounds much louder than Windows 11🤘

This actually makes sense. With the old system, they were claiming something new and different each time they bumped the number up. But now they will, in effect, be saying "this is just whatever we happen to have at this time."
It is the '26 model year. It is just a date-stamp rather than a feature stamp.

George Washington: There will come a day, my friends, when Apple will utilize dates instead of version numbers!
Washington's friend: Oh, that makes sense, so the iOS released in 2025 will be iOS 25!
Washington: If only it were that simple. iOS 26 will come out in 2025.
Friend: but sir, why not just go by release date?
Washington: impossible.

Nah, people always looked at the WWDC slide deck to learn what new stuff was being promised. There were fast and slow years.

How my thinking progressed on this in real time:

1) This isn't April 1st, MacRumors
2) That's a clever way to smoke out the leakers
3) Actually, this makes a lot of sense
4) Well, it makes sense, but it should be iOS 25

Makes me wonder what year they will use to name it, or will they no longer have the big release in September and start with Jan? i hope this does not end up more confusing.

Next iPhones, iPhone 25 Edge, iPhone 25, iPhone 25 Plus, iPhone 25 Pro and iPhone 25 Pro Max and in the Spring iPhone 25S Edge Mini (S will stand for spring).

This feels like a late rumor designed to ferret out leakers. This would create such a headache for soooooo many reasons.

On the one hand, yes, it seems like they're just trying to line up the numbers like they do with car year models, but it will confuse a LOT of regular users wondering "where the hell did versions 19-25 go?" on their phones.

Initial shock out of the way, I do hope this rumor is true just to get macOS caught up. Things like "Requires iOS 18, iPadOS 18, or macOS 15" are confusing to me sometimes, let alone for someone who doesn't keep track.

Awesome, I like it! It would be nice if the portables/wearables followed the same naming convention, kind of like how Macs have been for a long time. They could limit one device release per calendar year and dispose with the 'late 2025" and just call it the 2025 MacBook Air w/ M(insert processor generation here) processor.

So why isn't the OS that is being released in 2025, called IOS 25? IOS 26 seems more confusing. Are they calling it 26, because the will end-of-life it in 2026? Odd...
Probably because it will release in September, won’t become the default upgrade path for the majority of people until December, and will be the default operating system throughout almost the entirety of 2026.
Remember, most people don’t get the automatic update to the new operating system until around X.2, it’s very likely that most people won’t see this new update until very late 2025, if not 2026.

Finally! Now do the same with the hardware. It's really annoying that the various iPad models are referred to as "generations", e.g. "iPad (7th generation)", aka the 2019 iPad; or "iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation)", aka the 2021 / M1 11-inch iPad Pro.

It can be difficult to find what you need when accessory makers refer to them by their official name, but you don't know what generation your iPad is...but you do know what year it is or what chip it has.
