Should I not expect Air 3 to be released before Xmas time now? I was waiting to buy one.

the regular 9.7 inch (middle sized ipad in other words) was released yesterday. it is the Air 3 equivalent. it's the new 9.7 upgrade. i cant imagine they'd have 2 9.7 inchers in production at the same time going forward.

air 3 / pro 9.7. = call it what you will. it's the new regular sized update :)

Exactly, I don't understand why people are still talking about a iPad Air 3 when clearly the iPad Pro 9.7 is the new 9.7 iPad.

The Air line is now "officially" depreciated. The Air 2 will exist for another year or two and then it will just be Mini and Pro. There isn't any room in the line up for an Air 3 and a Pro 9.7".

Yeah, considering the Pro is the same size as the Air 3 in all dimensions and weighs the same, the only difference between the Pro and an Air 3 would be the name. You could say price, but you can't know if Apple wasn't going to raise the price of their Air lineup anyway.

Just pretend Apple called the iPad Pro the iPad Air 3 and get one.

The new Pro is the successor to the Air 2, just as the Air was the successor to the iPad 4. They aren't really new product lines, just new names. It's just marketing. So no, there won't be an "Air 3" later this year, anymore than there will be an "iPad 5".

Yes and no

Apple has declining iPad sales. But if the iPad Pro 9.7 is the true successor to the iPad Air 2.

Than Apple raised the base price on the iPad 9.7 inch size iPad by $100 to $599! Which would be idiotic.

I have to agree that the Air lineup seems to have ended. If it didn't, then the Air 2 would still have a 128GB option on the Apple Store.

It's actually quite amazing that they added the speakers, smart connector and Pencil support to the Pro 9.7" without compromising the battery life.

I'm not sure I am liking Apple's price hike as a result however. For the first time, I'm not going to buy an iPad on launch day. I have a feeling price drops will come pretty fast...

Fragmenting their product line into a 12.9" model, two different but virtually indistinguishable (to a layperson) 9.7" models, and a 7.9" model doesn't make much sense either.

ideally i'd personally like to see a 7.9, 9.7 & 12.9 inch Pro. 3 different sizes, 1 common design (specs differ accommodating to size of course). sizes cover all bases for all people.

if prices change from the traditional then so be it.

I suspect that the 12.9" model is a special interest model. I can see it being better for certain applications where the larger screen is a help. For example using AutoCAD out on site, viewing maps that allow you to see more of an area, carrying out inspections that are helped by seeing more on a screen, photo editing of DSLR images when remote from office, sketching & drawing. I use/d my iPad Air 1 for all of these and often wish for a larger screen. I have tried numerous robust tablets and robust laptops in the past and have returned to the iPad for ease of use, and due to the significantly lower weight (even when in a case).

I don't follow this stuff for the iPad. I have an iPhone and macbooks/imac but have not had an iPad since the original one was out....and last I checked they were going to be releasing an air 3. If the smaller pro is the replacement I'll get one of those.
[doublepost=1458655529][/doublepost]Thanks for all the info people!
[doublepost=1458655566][/doublepost]Was going to wait until later in the year/black friday sales but I just won some $$ so I might be tempted to order one now.

I think it's crazy how much they added and it didn't increase the size or weight of the iPad at all.

Fair enough.

Yep, the Pro 9.7 is the 'Air 3'. Even if they brought another 9.7, doubt it would be any different.

You'll be waiting a long, long time.

A good time to snag an air2 64gb or better the 128gb because the latter goes the way of the dodo.

And pricing is good because of yesterday's price drop even before any local sales.

I like what someone said above about "iPad Air" replacing the "iPad", and now "iPad Pro" is replacing "iPad Air". You're getting the same-sized display. Actually, you're getting the exact same-sized device, so at this point "Air" and "Pro" are just names.

You just have to realize some people are just normal consumers who don't pay attention to this stuff like some here do.

I'd be all over the Air 2 with a price drop but I'm pretty interested in the apple pen and those drawing apps.

Yes I fear iPhone 7 will be iPhone pro and they will heap another £100 into the price tag next. Rumour suggest they could call it something other than iPhone 7.

Would be hilarious if they did release two different 9.7' tablets

Any less features and it would just be an iPad Air 2 though lol.

I'm not sure I agree. Apple stated that the 9.7" screen size was their most popular and they must know that a device stating at $599 will not meet the bulk of the market. I think they'll keep a $399/499 9.7 inch iPad "SE" type device.

I think we agree. I was only saying the "Air" name has been depreciated. I agree Apple will keep a $399 entry level 9.7 screen but they'll do that like they have been doing namely cut the price of last years model. But when the Air 2 runs out of breath I doubt it's successor (basically a 9.7 Pro) will be called something other than Air 3. I think it will remain Pro and its successor will be Pro 2 just to keep it simple.

"The iPad Air 3 Pro 2 9.7 SE Plus! The only thing that's changed...is that we combined the names of all of our iPads while throwing in SE and Plus for kicks!" :D

So the "Pro" moniker just means it's more expensive since this is what we would have got with an "Air 3" anyway. Pfft. Not buying.

Air 2 Launch Pricing:

16GB $499
64GB $599
128GB $699

"Air 3" AKA iPad Pro Launch Pricing

32GB $599
128GB $749
256GB $899

I kind of wish they would just drop the numbers on iOS devices. iPad Pro 2 just sounds terrible to me.

Air brand is definitely on the way out.
