No iPad Air 3?

I didn't get the reason behind the Air tag added to the iPad to begin with, innovation in a name, its just the new iPad but didn't they use that the year before?
Just give them numbers or years, at least people wont be confused by what makes an air and a pro different.

Mini = small one, iPad = the size of an iPad, Pro = big one.

I think we agree. I was only saying the "Air" name has been depreciated. I agree Apple will keep a $399 entry level 9.7 screen but they'll do that like they have been doing namely cut the price of last years model. But when the Air 2 runs out of breath I doubt it's successor (basically a 9.7 Pro) will be called something other than Air 3. I think it will remain Pro and its successor will be Pro 2 just to keep it simple.

I can navigate it because I follow this stuff, but I can easily see how a general consumer might be overwhelmed with a trip to an Apple store.

Yup. It's scary how Apple history is repeating itself so quickly. It's very reminiscent of the Spindler/Amelio era of a billion and one Mac Performa models. Jobs came in, scraped the entire line because it was so confusion and consolidated the Mac line into Mac, Mac Pro, Macbook, and Powerbook. And now we are back to as you put it an overwhelming number of models which are all so very close in functionality. TC says he learned so much from SJ. Obviously not this.

Great points. I agree. In a way it would be so nice to see a simplified line up, even dropping the numbers going forward (similar to Macs). Maybe they're slowly hinting toward this with iPhone SE and multiple iPad Pros separated by screen size.

With the iPhone SE having nicely updated internals, yet priced to be at the low end, they're slowly removing the need to just push older models down the line. Could see them just keeping the 4" SE model updated every few years yet staying at that price point. Maybe for the 7 we'll see something like iPhone Air and iPhone Pro? Or just 'iPhone' and 'iPhone Plus'?.

Even with the iPads, would be nice to just see iPad Pro(s), iPad Air and iPad mini.

I wish they hadn't gone with this "Pro" naming scheme. Pencil and smart keyboard support pretty much had to come to the 9.7" iPad, and thus they had to give the 9.7" the Pro moniker to keep it consistent with the 12.9".

For consistency, I think it should be:

iPhone mini (1st Generation) 4"
iPhone (9th Generation) 4.7"
iPhone Plus (2nd Generation) 5.5"

iPad mini (4th Generation) 7.9"
iPad (7th Generation) 9.7"
iPad Plus (1st Generation) 12.9"

Removes numbering, goes to the generation scheme like the iPods and keeps all the iOS devices consistent.

The problem of course is that Apple is pretty much forced to keep around the numbering scheme because they keep the old versions of the iPhones and iPads to get to lower price points. Really, I think they should drop that scheme and just lower their prices a bit.

I'd say lower the prices by $50 or so and kill off the need to keep around old devices. Yes, the iPhone SE is priced right, but the 6S still carries a $250 premium. It's not like a small price drop would hurt Apple or the consumer. They could have easily priced the SE at $449, and considering all the features the SE has, I highly doubt 3D touch and .7" bigger display justifies the $250 price difference. It also removes the need to manufacture so many devices at once.

Also, I don't see how the generic naming scheme is just as much baggage at once. People recognize the generation scheme with iPods just fine. You could even just have it so that something like the iPhone 6S would be called "iPhone S" (6th Generation) then go back to "iPhone" for the 7th Generation. It's going to get ridiculous in the future calling it iPhone 20. The numbers are going to get dropped eventually; Apple is already doing it with the launch of the iPhone SE.

I think you're pretty safe. I can't see it having the demand that a new iPhone does. Or maybe I'm totally wrong, lol. I usually wake up around 4:30 (EDT), I'm going to check myself at that time to see what's happening.
