the big picture...
From an analysts perspective, they are just looking at the raw numbers of a "global rollout" that shows the bottom line numbers of one million units.
They are not focusing on domestic demand, international demand or future demand at that point. They are reflecting on the NUMBERS.
That is their job. Then they will postulate future earnings based on existing and future sales. That is what analysts do.
I feel for people that are trying to get their hands on an unit. I was in the same boat. I sold my original iPhone late Wednesday. I saw on Friday it was not going to be easy. Then on Saturday morning when my local AT&T said they had only 8GBs right before opening (nice of them) and you could do DF if you didn't get one, I bolted.
Went to get my car and opted not to go to the first mall I thought of but the second. And I got there 10 minutes before opening and less than 20 in line. I lucked out and scored a white 16GB.
And for the last two days the whole state of NJ shows no inventory on Apple Retail website.
Bottom line is that selling a million units (even globally) of a phone in three days (with the activation slowdowns) is very impressive and speaks to the demand.
And clearly that's not going to change in the next few days. There's nothing Apple can do but ramp up the assembly/delivery from China. And I am sure they will be doing it as best they can.
But from what I heard, the Netherlands only got 5000 units for the whole country and they sold out in minutes.
Apple will catch up the question is when? We don't know how much product they have and how quickly and where it will be distributed.
I'm wishing my fellow macrumors readers good luck in the hunt.
