How can the ROKR E2 not include iTunes support? Wasn't this revision meant to include improved features and more ease of use... but now they decide to drop iTunes just like that??? Bad move in my opinion!

The E1 is now a collector's item!!! I've been on the lookout for a cellphone ever since my current one was deemed 'obsolete' by my service provider. I still haven't upgraded. I'm getting one for sure! This is great news!

Here's to the Crazy Ones

Music on phones is where the next battle will be but unfortunately Apple is lagging. Apple could come out with its own cell phone but I'm guessing it will be very simplistic - may be good for some people - but for others, too simple ; but apple will be a small part - it needs established cell phone companies.

I have the same impression. Creating a mobile platform equivalent to S60 (Symbian) or Windows Mobile takes many years and a lot of refinement. These platforms are nowadays as compilcated as OS X - and remember how long that has taken...

But speaking of it, maybe they put OS X on their smartphones as others are betting in Linux nowadays as an alternative to Symbian and Windows Mobile.

Or they don't offer smartphones at all and just offer a closed system based on standard components and off the shelf RTOSes as all these Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers do. (Look at Apples Job Postings looking for people with RTOS experience).

But I strongly doubt that they can compete with such solutions - and, I am sorry, if they can't expand their music solution to include mobile phones then they will lose their market dominance big time within the next years.

Cheers

You know, maybe Motorola and Apple have decided that the ROKR doesn't represent either of them too well and will focus on offering iTunes compatibility on the phones that are actually desirable? RAZR V3i, SLVR etc. Just because support has been dropped from the ROKR range doesn't really imply anything else.

I'm looking forward to the Nokia N80, although from what I've heard the Wifi will be crippled to prevent Skype connecting properly. The newer LG's are nice too, especially the U880

If a phone supported Wi-Fi, CDMA, and GSM wouldn't it be like the size of a shoe box? Either way, it would be nice to have a cell phone with VoIP so atleast I could call from my home for free (and have perfect reception). IF Apple came out with a phone, it would definitely support Wi-Fi.

there are phones that do this and much more already; check out HTC WIZARD and HTC UNIVERSAL for starters...

...and these are the BIG models; if you don't need keyboard, you still get 3G/GSM/wi-fi in other models.

Most of them run WM5 with a few exception from NOKIA.

As you can see, no shoeboxes, and they feature 624mhz CPU and 640x480 screen among other things ( ok, that is the top model; make it 320x240 at 450mhz average ).

When I was looking for a new phone last month, I checked out the ROKR. The ease of using iTunes was really easy, a button dedicated to getting into iTunes. Play, pause, fast foward, rewind was all easy to use as well. The one thing thats turned me away from it was the fact that it was a Motorola. Motorolas interface is just terrible, I can't stand it. The speed of the phone, going from menu to menu was forever. Motorola needs to do a huge overhaul on there cell phones. iTunes on another cell phone would be wonderful. Hopefully Jobs has something up his sleeves.

Wow - that was done faster than a Hollywood marriage. I actually really like my Moto e815 - it's Verizon I think is lame for disabling BT OBEX.

Please let this be because Apple decided that Nokia would be a better partner.
I like Nokia phones even more - let's hope this comes true, though since Verizon seems really keen on them, I also hope iSync eventually adds support for LG phones, too.

Though unless battery life has magically improved, playing MP3s on a cell phone seems like a fast way to a dead battery.

Apple doesn't have to bow down to cellular network providers. They can sell a phone unlocked that will work on any GSM network worldwide. You buy the phone from apple and put your SIM card in and bam you're in business.

I'd say apple could still make a PDA, but these days if a PDA isn't a cell phone its useless anyway.

Tried that with a GSM Nokia I bought in Australia and also used in the UK. Didn't work with Cingular as they require a crippled phone to work with their system. Guess they figure it will make it too hard for us to switch to another carrier.

who needs iTunes on their phone anyway? like it'll hold enough songs that you buy to be worth it. get yourself a nice big iPod, sync your music and hold that thought until you get home to spend your hardearned 99¢es.

it was doomed from the start. if Apple goes for an iPod with cell phone capability instead of a cell phone trying to act like an iPod, then they might have something. in the meantime, no sell.

the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I believe the saying that, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

A little birdie, that has a nest in a very specific tree, has told me NOT to believe everything you hear from some east coast big city birds.

Of course in the big scheme of things I'm nobody, but I'll listen to the bird in the tree in this case.

My questions to this announcement (and image release) though is, what does the "02/03/2006" date on the screen of the ROKR E2 image that Motorola posted mean? Launch date maybe?

Did anybody else catch the Motorola O ROKR press release? The companion product to the E2?

Sorry... had to say it.

Apple going with SONYericsson is very unlikely :(

Apple should make their own iPhone. They'd sell more than iPods.

I love this board sometimes.

Yes. making a phone is as easy as just making one. You dont have to worry about a service provider. You dont have to worry about their fee's and regulations, their server networks, what they allow, telecome laws and anything.

Just a make phone. its the next craze

Motorola made a brick to debut the first iTunes mobile software on, Apple doesn't renew contract.

Who cares.

Wait for a phone made by Apple, that will actually be discussion worthy.

the reason that itunes is not in the phone is not because moto didn't want it in there.... Apple said screw you, you guys messed up we are making our own phone gonna sell it to anyone that wants it UNLOCKED to use on any service from Cingular to Verizon and anyone in between $399

Verizon will not activate any phone's ESN that is not bought through them. Recent policy change, must activate AGPS capable handsets that are VZW branded. The parties over, a least with non VZW branded equipment. (OK a very few people get around it, but it's hard with VZW tracking ESN's.)
Motorola will break bluetooth, mp3 players, among other really cool functions exactly to VZW specs(along with the first firmware version or two).

Other than that, if a manufacturer can spec a handset to FCC/GSM standards, I don't see why an unlocked GSM version couldn't be cooked up by anyone? Distribution might be a little tough. Did I miss any other theoretical reason Apple couldn't make their own phone?(other than it's never going to happen).
