I don't even know if I'd believe this if someone told me... BUT, I saw with own two eyes.

What a video that'd make. :p But, seriously that sounds incredible. I know the theory behind some of the glass strain rubbish but I've never seen anything happen in front of me. :(

Drop damage to an iPhone or iPad is pretty obvious. I think after inspecting my iPad it was obvious that didn't happen here. Let's not forget what a big deal was made about this screens durability early on (the glass bend). Apple
makes great products, but there is always a chance of defects... It didn't take much to figure that out in my case.

Not using the smart cover- going a different this time...

That thing (3G) had just had enough... Not seeing correllation, but great research (out of warranty- got a 3GS from my bro).

You are some lucky...

looking at that damage it clearly looks like impact damage. I have seen pressure cracks from glass from either twist or movement, and that kind of photo definately looks like impact. Sure you may not have dropped it, perhaps you dropped something on it, or someone mistakenly stepped on it.

You were very lucky that they replaced it. Knowing how sometimes unscrupulous my own thoughts are, the primary way of trying to hide guilt is to broadcast loud and proud just how shocked and amazed you are at what happened etc. Look, I showed everyone, even posted on MacRumours, it has to be true, if I was trying to hide anything, why would I broadcast?

Why indeed??

As I said, you are very lucky the Apple Genius wasn't such a genius that day.

I am not convinced.

I've been visiting macrumors for a few years now, on occasion I post a thread. Usually, trying to find how to fix something or if someone has experienced the same issue. This post, was the same. I just wanted to know if this had happened to anybody else...even just one person. No need to lie or to get over. I love Apple products, and as stated before, I wasn't banking on getting a replacement... I was pretty sure, because I was there to wintness it and know how I have treated my iPad, there was some sort of defect. Could've been the screen, could've been how the screen sat in the body, etc... Bottom line, there was no "impact" damage... It never dropped, and nothing ever drop on it. I'm not an "impact" specialists (with all do respect) and can't explain why it did what it did and that's exactly why I took it into Apple.

Reservation today at Apple store went well... took the iPad 2 in and at first was told they could probably fix it for $230 or something. Stu, the Apple employee who helped me, did say, "let me check to see if that's our only option". He came back about 3 minutes later and said, "well (bad news right?), Apple does extend a one time courtesy on something like this, and we do have your model in stock... let me go get that for you".

So- I got a new iPad 2. I did ask if he had heard about any issues similar, and his reply was, "no"... I pressed him a little bit about if he had heard of any problems with the screen at all... his reply, "no"... so I took it for what its worth.

Spiterwolf- I'd skip the Apple phone call and book an appointment with the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store.

NO LIE... Apple listened, inspected my iPad 2 and came through with a new replacement. Great customer service, I must add, regardless... I seriously didn't believe I'd walk with a replacement, just hoped they listen and have some sort of alternative.

That's awesome!
But... I'd stop using the smart cover. My guess is the repeated smacking of the cover into the glass somehow eventually weakened and then cracked it. Maybe the glass was just defective in the first place and the new one will take the stress no problem, but why chance it?

I wouldn't have accepted that. I would have insisted that this was not accidental damage but a case of flawed design or workmanship, and therefore should have been replaced without using up your "one time courtesy replacement for accidental damage."

Just saying...

I knew the smart cover was evil all along.

Time to toss mine in the garbage bin.

I've decided to order the Griffin Survivor case... I know it's a lot, probably too much, but I'm definitely moving on from the "smart cover". I honestly believe that the smart cover is fine, and is great for those who use them... this was a freak, uncommon thing that happened. Never once did the magnets touch the screen (as suggested...that would be evident, most likely in the form of scratches on the screen), as for the constant slam, not sure? The smart cover is light... again, totally freak thing, and I think the screen or the build is what the problem was. Out of the millions of iPad 2's that have been made, I'm sure there is still close to under 5% defects.

As for the "one time courtesy"... I'm fine with it.

Sentences that start with "no lie" are usually the ones I'm most critical of. Ergo, I think there is a lie there somewhere.

http://www.ted.com/talks/pamela_meyer_how_to_spot_a_liar.html

Great TED talk on how to spot a liar. Most of it is fairly obvious, but it's good to see an expert validating what we know in our gut.

Some fascinating video clips and stills of "liars in the news".

I especially like the picture of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, President Obama, and Michelle Obama. Not really a lie, but a great illustration of unavoidable body language. It's a photo-op, with Obama greeting Strauss-Kahn, while Michelle stands on Obama's other side. Obama appears to be restraining Strauss-Kahn's arm in a clear "stay away from Michelle" gesture...

dude, stop the BS posturing.

apple has no record of any such damage occurring before (i think we would have at least seen one thread here if it did), so he would have had a very hard time convincing of a flawed design that would have contributed to the glass cracking.

if the OP had taken that attitude, he probably wouldn't have been leaving the store with a free replacement.

I dropped my iPad 2 from 2 feet,had a YooBao leather case,no damage.:D
