Control.
It's all about control.

The USRR had their choreographed May day parades and Apple
has their ironically titled "media" events where they restrict the media.
I wonder if atendees get shocked if they don't clap and "woooooooooo" loud enough? :D

I wondered about that clause in the invitation where it says that "I agree to wear testicular ground clamps that Apple will provide and install at the entrance to the event".

I dont understand why apple has decided to stop streaming these events live. They did it twice and since have stopped. Seems like a step back in my eyes but I am sure they have their reasons!!!

They will post the video later. It is best not to scoop the press covering your event.

I would very much doubt that Steve Jobs will be there. The Company needs to show it has faith in their new CEO and this isn't done by wheeling out Steve Jobs to make a glib one last thing appearance.

Mind you, given that they will be hammered by the press (rightly or wrongly) if there is only a 4S on offer Tim Cook might quite like someone else to take the heat.

This is soooo true. he don't want to stream live the looks of grim disappointment when the 4S is sold as the new Magical product that will change the world because the’ve improved voice recognition.

I am sure there was a media backlash after the last time and Apple will not do it anymore. If you want to read more into it , feel free. If it's makes you happy, it can't be that bad.

Most people are quite a bit more intelligent than tech geeks.

Apple is doing the tech media a favor by not live streaming the event.

This forces interested readers to follow the event on a tech site's live blog, rather than stare at a video from Apple's web site. This translates to more pageviews/ad impressions for the media site.

Ultimately, this drums up more discussion as well during the announcement as well as after various writers post their articles after the event.

I think it's going to be a crappy announcement and that's why. I think there will be some not that exciting iPhone news and little change or taking away parts of the iPod lineup. It'll be super meh and Apple was pressured into it because they dropped the ball on all of the above products and knew it. They just couldn't do nothing any longer because Xmas is coming.

Wrong, the virtual Assistant is going to be a NUCLEAR bomb that goes off and changes everything. Did you read the tech press today where the Siri founder is calling it a "world changing event"????

1) Consumers don't care about specs, so the new processor is no biggie to most people. Android phones have proven that time and again.

2) ios5 looks awesome, but we already know what's in it. No big deal there.

3) if assistant is awesome, will people be ready for it? Nobody I know uses voice features. I don't. I wouldn't and I have no idea how they could make it appealing. I think they'll hype that and people won't care.

4) people want new iPods to get their kids for Xmas and not a super expensive touch. No decent iPod announcement will turn
People off.

Oh, they'll still sell more of this phone than any ever, but I just think that's because it's the next iPhone, not because it'll blow anybody's mind any more than the 4. I just don't see the excitement and I think apple knows they messed up.

Watch out Androids!

Android is going to be crushed when iOS 5 and the new iPhone comes out!

The reason nobody uses the current speech interface is you have to turn on a 3rd party app and it works poorly. But a fully integrated solution that allows you to use your NATURAL language is revolutionary and world-changing. My guess is you just can't comprehend how Oct 4th, 2011 will be a date long remembered.

Apple changes everything again.

The last time I used a Nuance-based voice recognition, e.g Dragon dictate, whatever it thought I said was certainly not what I said. I certainly would not be saying 'horny' in a chemistry lesson.

Siri's AI tech will make Nuance or MSFT's tech look like 10-year old tech!

Says here they go live from the keynote. http://www.watchvertex.com/?page=schedule

Is it reliable?

That sucks.. was really hoping I could see it live without having to keep refreshing Engadget.

Guess I'll put the box of tissues and lube away till the stream is available on Apple's site after the Keynote.

Tissues? I use a bath towel.

I just came thinking about tomorrows announcement. Sorry.

These things happen. No one will think less of you as a person... and size doesn't matter.

Do you remember the "can everybody turn off their WiFi" from jobs?

Live streaming dose not allow for editing when things don't go your way.

With some luck it will nuke the site of the "Space Ship"
