no longer slimmest smartphone

Samsung didn't create anything, Apple did. All they do is manufacture the parts. Now, with the A4 chip, did they work with Apple on creating it? Yes, of course, but Samsung obviously copied Apple with the Galaxy S series. There's no denying it. Samsung didn't create that - Apple did. Jonny Ive isn't part of Samsung.
Don't make me laugh. Apple doesn't design processors anymore. They got out of the custom/boutique processor many, many years ago, which is why Macs use Intel processors instead of RISC chips like they used to. The A4 is a customized version of the Hummingbird processor. Samsung is a massive electronics conglomerate which makes everything from semiconductors to cameras and and screens. There is little doubt in my mind which company supplied the brain power to design a new processor. Apple is a far, far cry from Intel, AMD, Samsung, or Motorola. In all likelihood, Apple's engineers requested certain registers and instructions/functions from the already-designed hummingbird processor... .then Samsung did the design-work and supplied it to Apple.

Kid, you're obviously not an engineer because you have no clue how these things work.

Your argument is ridiculous. It's like saying, this pizza is better than this company's pizza because it has better, high-quality sauce. My pizza is the only good pizza - you can't have an opinion. There is no definite SAMOLED rules. End of discussion.

That is exactly what I'm saying. You can't measure opinion, but you can measure performance. Do you want a higher resolution, but more dim, more washed out, smaller screen over a lower resolution, brighter, more colorful, larger screen. It is almost exactly like asking whether you want a 36-inch, 1080p Vizio LCD television or a 42-inch 720p Panasonic television. I'll take the Panasonic, thanks.

I have. I'm fine without. No need to impose your values on me, son.
Then you already know its a *very* nice screen.... and Samsung has even improved on it already.

I'm wasn't comparing top-of-the-line "real" cameras. I was comparing smartphone to smartphone.
Its a silly comparison to make because the performance is almost identical (and both horrible). You might as well argue about whether cat pee or rabbit pee tastes better in a can or a bottle. LOL.

People aren't agreeing with you. Where did you get this exact proof?
Search is your friend. Google is too. You obviously haven't done any research, so this would be a good opportunity for you. Don't be surprised when you find out that I'm right.

Android may be growing, but iOS isn't going anywhere. A multiple carrier strategy here in the U.S. would crush Android, and you know it.
No, it won't. iPhone is already multi-carrier all over the world and they are getting spanked by Android. Same thing will happen here in the USA when they go multi-carrier.

I think it's comparing apples to oranges when you compare iOS on a single phone to Android on dozens of phones. Of course Android is more prominent. It's not the same thing. Now pick the hottest Android phone out there and compare that to iOS on the iPhone. Them's apples and apples.

Don't forget to mention that the iP4 is more expensive than every other Android based phone. Maybe this matters to the customer?

@ Tarzanman obviously you are no engineer either - nor you are one who is able to discuss matters unaffected.

Its time to go :)

That's pretty much my feeling; of course Windows is going to be more prevalent, it's on machines from dozens of different manufacturers, same with Android. And, like windows, just because something is popular doesn't make it a good product.

Who cares about .1mm this isn't even worth starting a thread about.
The point isn't that .1mm is a big deal (it ain't). The point is Steve Jobs can't brag that the iPhone is the thinnest smart phone now. That's all the OP was getting at.

Personally, the 3GS with it's rounded back is as thin as I need. I like to be able to find it in my pocket when I look for it and not have it snap in half when I bend over. This trend towards thinner and thinner concerns me.

The pentile matrix just gives it less subpixels than the iphone 4. The contrast ratio on an AMOLED display can't come close to an ips panel. It's got actual "black" thanks to the fact that it doesn't need any backlighting.

The iphone 4's display is good, there's no arguing that, but at the same time there are other displays out now that are arguably better. The only 1 up apple has over it is a higher resolution.

and to the mods, no this isn't trolling. I'm stating a fact right now.

Pentile Matrix is crap. It doesn't just produce 1/3 fewer subpixels; colors are horribly inaccurate because each side of the pixel can display only 2 sets of colors. The end result are bad colors that impress passersby because they look "vibrant," when in actuality, they are inaccurate and eye-bleeding after awhile. If you think having gimped subpixels is OK, then you need to use a pentile matrix screen for serious reading.

Do you think that the Galaxy S' meager 0.38 million RGB subpixels look good compared to the Droid's 0.82m or the iP4's 1.23m?

http://www.displaymate.com/Smartphone_ShootOut_1.htm is a pretty decent authority when it comes to displays, and they think that the Retina Display is superior to everything else, although the Droid's LCD is better best for multimedia because of its color gamut, color accuracy, and better blacks.

SAMOLED's amazing contrast is meaningless in bright conditions, where even LCDs have blacks that look deep. DisplayMate's "Screen Bright Contrast Rating" is more important because most people do not always use their phones in near darkness. The Galaxy S has a high ambient light contrast rating of 69-83, while the iP4 is 77.

I certainly agree that SAMOLED's blacks and overall contrast are absolutely stunning, but the use of pentile matrix really ruins everything else: colors, sharpness, detail, etc.. When Samsung releases a phone/tablet with a standard RGB SAMOLED display, I will buy it and unlike with the Galaxy S, I will keep it just to stare at it.

Well, Steve had a good run --6 months in tech is a long journey.

I also am scared of Apple's obsession with thinness. Some people seem to be clamoring for even thinner MacBook Pro models, yet they want quad processors and faster dedicated graphics at the same time.
