I really like the MBP idea. I'm buying an Air and will be using a 19" LCD when I have it at my desk. A good desktop setup AND portability. Sounds lovely to me.

an iMac is a perfectly acceptable solution. Convincing yourself that you need a headless mac is a poor argument. If that is truly the case, the either a MacPro or Mini will fit your needs.

I think a headless Mac would be the perfect fit for the OP.
Go for the iMac and sell the monitor sounds like a good option to me.

"Someone get Psystar on the phone!"

"sell your lcd"

Gimme a break. While you're at it you forgot to capitalize the S and add a (.) at the end.

It's time for a new mac, but this time it seems there's no right configuration for me.

- I need a desktop computer
- A Mac Pro has too HP for me
- The iMac would be good but I already have a great 24" lcd monitor and I can't make room for a dual monitor setup
- I feel the Mac mini is a little underpowered for my needs

A headless imac would be perfect... but it seems that the only viable solution is a (closed) macbook connected to my lcd. Any advice is welcome. Thanks
Get a Dell Vostro desktop with the Intel Core 2 Duo, with the savings over the Mac Pro, buy the MBP, and in June, buy the updated Mac Mini.

The current mini will actually suit your needs, but it will most likely be updated to x3100 graphics any week now. I'd recommend waiting for the update. I'm also in the market for a headless iMac. The lack of dual monitor support (which the OP doesn't want) is the only thing keeping me from replacing my old P4 box with a mini. The monitor on the 24" iMac is way better than the one on the 20", but if you spent more than $500 on your current monitor the 24" iMac may still seem like a downgrade.

i say hold it 3 weeks or so and see if imac or mac mini get updated - gona happen soon, maybe at WWDC.. i reckon new imacs will be awesome//

The 24" iMac's monitor is great, and they have some great deals on refurbed units right now...

it seems next week there will be a iMac update...
I don't feel comfortable with the mini... don't know why... slow and small HD, terrible graphics card.

The mini isn't that slow. I think a refurb Mac Pro might be best. Can't be that much more expensive than a MBP or 24" imac, if any more. And it'll probably last longer and generally be the right mac for the job.

1) Mac mini 2.0GHz, 4GB RAM (3rd party)

2) a) MacBook 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM (3rd party)
b) MBP (for the graphics if you need)

3) Find some place that sells old model Mac Pros (unused though)

I am also waiting for a Mac(no so mini), something like this would be perfect for me and a lot of other users:

Macmidi
- Dual core processor
- Two hard drive bays
- Dedicated graphics card
- Tray bay DVD burner
- 50%-60% smaller then the MacPro

*hint to apple*

I agree that would be great, but I absolutely love my 24" iMac at work. And it is far cheaper than what the above plus a comparable 24" monitor would probably cost. I think the 24" basic is a steal of a price, esp. if you buy refurb.

unfortunately, we are not going to have something like that anytime soon. I'd say just double the macmini height, put inside a 3.5"/7200 HD, a 2.4 core2duo, up to 4gb of ram, and a decent graphics card and I'd be happy :)

Nobody would care... anyway I ended up buying a 24" imac I am really satisfied with. Only concern: monitor brightness too high.

There's a program that can dim the monitor. I think it's called Shades.

shades does not reduce monitor brightness it just place an always on top full screen semi-transparent layer.

I personally love my 20 inch iMac, I'm not sure about it having a "poor color palette". The only difference between the 20 and 24 that I have seen is that the 24 inch iMac has better viewing angles, but who cares if you are simply sitting in front of it? I also watch movies on it from across the room (approximately 10 feet away) and it is just fine. It is all a matter of opinion of course, and a color professional might not be satisfied with the screen. Most of us are not pros though, as I am not.

The Mac Mini is surprisingly fast. I was thoroughly impressed using the 1.83GHz model, and I use a 2.4GHz iMac on a daily basis.
