Once a new CPU is released, another will be announced, then another, and another... Just the way technology is these days. Considering it's taking so long for this MP update, I wouldn't expect the next one til 2012.

There's one more thing...

Apple's mobile and desktop division are almost CERTAINLY separate!

What in the hell are you talking about here? There are many instances where Apple has pulled their OSX team out of the Mac labs to help their stupid IOS get out of the door on time sacrificing the OSX development. Ever heard of the Leopard delay back in 2007?

I wish that those departments were separate! However unfortunately they're not.

2013

.
Ivy Bridge will be better than Sandy Bridge so I think Apple will wait for Ivy Bridge in 2012.

Wait a minute...Haswell will be better than Ivy Bridge so I think Apple should wait until 2013 for Haswell.

In 2014, there will be something better than Haswell. It might be best to wait until 2014.

I am just going to wait patiently until 2014. I am sure everyone else will do the same.

Sandy Bridge

I think this is the best time for an update.. as Sandy Bridge will be a lot faster and more efficient.. There really isn't much of a true serious difference between the w55xx/w35xx chips compared to the 980x/w36xx and w56xx or x56xx to justify a true update.. if anything, NEW GPUS!!! Damn we need those more than ever!

WHats after Haswell?

The big question will be: How do we know we will all still be here in 2014?? Serious predictions for another recession are looming for 2012-2014.

I'm sorry, but I completely disagree. This is just stupid. Have you not seen the movie 2012? We will all die way before the 2014 MP! ;) :D

this could be

imminent given how our world is currently.. and not to mention in two years another recession except 1000's times worse is predicted to happen.. but this is way off topic and certainly not part of macrumor's by-laws.

This certainly ought to cheer people up.

Also by the disaster of the stupid iPhone 4 antenna is going, will we see an Apple in two years?;)

They are separate but not the way folks usually talk about it.

http://www.apple.com/pr/bios/

You'll see that there is someone in charge of Macintosh Hardware. There is someone in charge of Devices Hardware ( mainly iOS hardware). Then there are two folks with software titles iPhone software (iOS) and Software Engineering (Mac OS X + other stuff. ).

The problem is that there are core bits of Mac OS X and iOS that are shared. But conceptually they should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time now. I think Forstall was suppose to be in charge of Leopard and pushing iOS out the door at same time. I thought it was split at this point so doesn't get single tracked.

Sandy Bridge equivalent update for 980x/w36xx/w56xx aren't coming for at least 12 months. What will drop first for Sandy Bridge is
aimed at desktop mini tower market.

Short term, the only thing coming Sandy Bridge would be more appropriately dropped into an iMac.

99.9% of the people whining about an update literally wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them on a daily basis.

Well Apple is getting single tracked. Despite of what anybody says. The proof is in their actions in 2010.

Every signal one of their significant updates was for their mobile devices including the laptops. Even though Apple claims that the Mini Mac is a desktop but you could take it almost anywhere where there's electricity easily.

Well that depends upon how great the upgrade is in all aspects obviously.

Just e-mailed Steve

Hey everyone I just e-mailed steve the idea to release the 12-core Mac Pro in order to keep his hardcore user base happy, since they are the ones who got everyone else into macs. Let's see what he says. Also does anyone know if maybe the reason they haven't been released is because of a heat issue from the chips or graphics driver issues? I would probably already know that info, if macrumors still knew what a desktop was.

Maybe 99.9% is a little much ;)

Personally, I am getting the new MP for 3D rendering which will be able to utilize all the cores. And when it comes to rendering, you can always make it faster, thus always in need of more power.

There are many colleges who have Mac labs, and definitely quite a few here in Texas. These are used by students all the time to render many different things which would definitely use the MP to its full potential.

Sure, a lot of people with Mac Pros won't end up using it to its full potential, but there are also a lot or prosumers out there who know what it is capable of and need its power for what they do.

No... it all depends on what software they are using.

I like to push buttons. What I was getting at is people who say "I'm editing HD, I need the fastest thing possible" when they don't know jack ****. They don't realize FCP doesn't utilize all those cores. For render farms, AE, 3D, sure the increase will be useful but the majority of the hacks complaining on this forum aren't pros who would utilize the upgrade.

oh yeah :D

It isn't just marketing. Intel hasn't been able to deliver on 32nm 6 core demand if it was priced in the $500 range. They were barely keeping up with their contract orders until recently. (there are numerous reports that back that up) That is indicative they are operating without much excess capacity.

Good point, I forgot that! Hopefully Intel can deliver both series at the same time, just like they did with Nehalems (non Xeons came earlier actually)

The 16nm die shrink of Haswell is called Rockwell, I think

You are generally right. I'm sure I wouldn't notice much of a difference. It's not like the current Mac Pro is a C2D. I can wait though. And it's the ever diminishing performance per dollar on March 2009 hardware that keeps me waiting.

That's one of the funniest and ridiculous comments I've read. What a stupid thing to say. You still need a monitor and mouse and keyboard and cables in fact you may as well say the iMac is more of a laptop!!

hey be nice. He meant to say that you can take the Mac mini ANYWHERE [as long as when you get there, there are cables, a mouse, a keyboard, and a monitor]

It's practically a laptop!

More precisely, a headless laptop ;) From inside, it's nothing more but a laptop. It's quite portable, as long as you have the peripherals in the place you are taking it to.

headless, keyboardless, mousless, batteryless, cordless-less laptop that you can in NO WAY use atop your lap.

OR you could say it's a small form-factor desktop and not be ridiculous.
