The action-adventure survival game "No Man's Sky" is now available for the Mac on Steam, with "another surprise" from studio Hello Games to follow in the "near future."

At WWDC last year, Apple announced that No Man's Sky would be available for the iPad and Mac would by the end of 2022. Hello Games missed that deadline and the game is finally available for the Mac as of today. Hello Games founder Sean Murray teased two upcoming Apple-related announcements earlier this week. Today, Murray seemingly confirmed that the launch for Mac is one of the two teased announcements, meaning another is soon to follow.

While the second announcement is likely to be the release of No Man's Sky for iPad given that title was announced alongside the Mac version at WWDC last year, the tease leans into speculation that Hello Games could be working on a game for Apple's mixed-reality headset, which is widely expected to be announced at WWDC in less than a week.

No Man's Sky is already available on multiple VR platforms, including on PC and PlayStation VR. When the game was demoed at WWDC last year, it was played on a Mac with the M1 chip. Since Apple's headset is rumored to feature at least one chip that is based on the M2 chip in addition to a dedicated image signal processor, it should be more than capable of running the game.

Hello Games has also worked with Apple to publish games on Apple Arcade. Given Apple's discussions with Hello Games in recent years, No Man's Sky being among the initial wave of games available on Apple's mixed-reality headset is not out of the question.

While some rumors have suggested Apple's headset is not particularly focused on gaming, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has repeatedly referred to gaming, media, and communication as the three main priorities of the device. Apple has reportedly been working with a number of gaming developers to help them update their existing content for mixed reality and the company is expected to provide a robust set of developer tools for creating experiences for the headset.

No Man's Sky is available for the Mac now on Steam, with a release on the Mac App Store to soon follow.

Oh good, another platform I don't have time to play this game on 😅

Great news for the Mac in general, though! Back in the day this would have had a demo during a keynote, with mention of some special features exclusive to the macOS version.

New to modern gaming...any benefit buying it on Steam vs. Mac App Store?

Any Mac fan should be happy because it's 1 more game on Mac. Still a long way to go but hopefully more developers move over to Mac. I mean, it'll never get close to Windows gaming but I really want to see what kind of games can run on the Apple Silicon chips.

Unless Apple start dramatically improving cooling systems in Macs (which let's be honest is not going to happen) then even Apple Silicon will struggle. They might be good chips but Macs have poor airflow and cooling systems for gaming.

If you have access to Steam then that's the way to go as it's the biggest gaming platform on PC. If you care about mods then Steam is better.

If you don't care about that and/or want to support games on Mac then get it on the App Store. There is always the chance that Hello Games could drop Mac sooner than Steam though. Not saying it'll happening but if there is any version of the game they will keep supporting it'll be the Steam version.

Pretty soon they are gonna tell us we’re getting Resident Evil 4 , the GameCube port 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂

The staff don't seem interested in reporting, but this is actually the latest in a series of Mac games announced this month.

'SnowRunner is coming to the Apple silicon Mac lineup, and will be available for $29.99 on the Mac App Store, Mac via Steam, and the Epic Games Store. All previously released DLC, as well as the Premium Edition and Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3 Passes, will be available for purchase separately.'

'Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration being remade in Unreal Engine 5. Layers of Fear will be available on Mac with Apple Silicon taking full advantage of the M-Series chipsets and Metal framework. Layers of Fear is launching on June 15 for Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.'

'Fort Solis is coming soon to Steam on Mac!'

'Available on the incredible Apple silicon Mac lineup, Dragonheir: Silent Gods is native on Mac and takes full advantage of Metal — software that powers hardware-accelerated graphics on Apple platforms — resulting in smooth and responsive gameplay with high frame rates and stunning visuals. Leveraging technology, such as Metal FX Upscaling, Variable Refresh Rate, and Spatial Audio, players will experience enhanced graphics and a more immersive audio experience.'

'Following its successful launch on Windows PC and console, Piranha Bytes presents the highly ambitious Science-Fantasy-RPG, ELEX II, is coming to Mac. Available this summer on the Mac App Store, ELEX II stands as one of the pioneering titles to fully embrace the GPU driven pipelines with Indirect Command Buffer (ICB) approach on Mac. ELEX II is also among the select few games that have shaders specifically optimised for the Metal shading language.'

If Apple would "show developers the money" like other platforms do, you could get your wish. Else, developers just go where they can make the most money... just like Apple.
Yeah it's not like Apple can't. They could disrupt the entire gaming market pretty much overnight if they wanted. Throw some millions or even billions to studios/publishers for development/exclusivity, throw together a store real quick, and take a 10-20% cut and they'll attract lots of games. That's just on the PC/desktop/laptop market though.

Even entering the console market wouldn't be difficult for Apple. If the Apple Silicon chips are as good as people make them out to be (I'm not saying they are bad but they haven't really been pushed hard. Or hard enough for gaming) then they just need to develop a dedicated gaming chip, build a case with good enough airflow, and stick a decent cooler on the SoC.

uhh unless it's on sale don't bother. you can probably find it cheaper else where.

here in the uk steam are selling it for £50 but i could buy it for £16 elsewhere. I already own it. Paid £15 for it years ago.

you're money so whatever but just letting you know.
Xbox game pass has it and it’s only $14.99 a month.

I never used Steam. How does it work?

Cant I buy the game on Mac OS App Store directly?

Really tried to get into it when I had Xbox Game Pass, but I struggled to figure out what I actually needed to do. All I had was something like "Go get [item]" without telling you what it was or where it was. :(
