awful electron.js-like client

Mac users need to get over this. Ours is a tiny, minority platform. No developer that values their efficiency is going to design bespoke apps using Apple's half-complete libraries (ask any Mac developer what using SwiftUI is like). Either make your peace with multiplatform UI/UX or be prepared to do without. It's absolutely the irreversible trend in software development. Avoiding it is setting yourself up to only use twee indie house software or Apple's built-in options. Which yes, is absolutely a choice anyone can make, but then you're putting platform above software and in 2023 that's odd to me. To each their own, however.

I'm not a mac user lol. I'm a Linux and Windows user. Electron.js is awful on every operating system as a programmer and a user.

Edit: Like everything wrong with computing, I blame windows honestly. Windows has no real native native UI that is easy to bind to. I could not figure out how to make a WinUI 3 application (the "modern" Windows 11 look) that was smaller then 40 MB.

We can agree to disagree on that :) But as a developer, then, I'm sure you can understand how it dramatically simplifies development. I'm not trying to forgive the quirks of bringing web languages, libraries and standards over to traditional software development, but at least I hope we can agree that doing so does have some reasoning behind it.

Geez, can we get games at all? Despite all its good points, Skyrim is over 10 years old and has been respun on everything but a dead toaster at this point.

While I'm one of the few who enjoyed NMS, even this title is old news by now.

Uhh this is not an official announcement for a native ARM version? lmao. Hardware acceleration is not saying they are natively coding the game for ARM architecture, specifically Apple Silicon? Seems rather vague to me?

I said Valve was fixing the Mac client of Steam. I never said anything about an ARM version.

An ARM version will eventually come since they're making one for Steam for ChromeOS

So this does bring up a huge question for the $3k apple headset...will it run steam? And a second question...will it allow for a display passthrough mode to be connected to a different computer and be run as a VR output device?

I really hope both are a yes, as I feel the biggest draw for this headset will be the comfort + incredible displays. But if those displays are always tied to the M2...it is going to age poorly in the next 3-5 years as CPU/GPUs multiply in power and capabilities.

New to modern gaming...any benefit buying it on Steam vs. Mac App Store?
I don’t like Steam on Mac. After a certain time the client freezes up for me and takes a bit to respond again. Makes chatting difficult.

This is where I hoped that PWAs would have worked, but a game client would not be possible with PWA, alongside more complicated applications. But Discord, Spotify, and VSCode (three popular Electron.js programs) work 99% fine as a PWA.

That is a good question. If the Apple Reality has a USB-C port they could easily allow PCVR compatibility. But that will be up to Apple if they wanna support it (which they'd be stupid not to since the damn thing is gonna cost over $2,000. No one in the VR community would buy one if it can't be used with PCVR when the BigScreen Beyond and Pimax can at half the cost)

Yeah it's not like Apple can't. They could disrupt the entire gaming market pretty much overnight if they wanted. Throw some millions or even billions to studios/publishers for development/exclusivity, throw together a store real quick, and take a 10-20% cut and they'll attract lots of games. That's just on the PC/desktop/laptop market though.

Even entering the console market wouldn't be difficult for Apple. If the Apple Silicon chips are as good as people make them out to be (I'm not saying they are bad but they haven't really been pushed hard. Or hard enough for gaming) then they just need to develop a dedicated gaming chip, build a case with good enough airflow, and stick a decent cooler on the SoC.
Well Apple can’t do whatever they want with their money. It’s probably something the shareholders don’t want Apple to be a major part of. That’s the problem with public companies. You give up some of your freedoms.

Steam is the preeminent app store and environment for games and predates the Mac App Store by many years. It's developer-friendly, supports mods, and is multi-platform by design. Often if you buy games for one platform, you get all other supported platforms included (although that's not guaranteed).

Apple's App Store is all about security theater and maximizing Apple's revenue. If you feel differently about it, I respect that, but were I trying to support Mac gaming, I'd do it on Steam, not via the App Store.
And GOG is even nicer in the sense that all (most?) games are DRM free!
”DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.”

But some games are not available there that are on Steam and Epic.

But I see No Man's Sky is there (and 50% off at the moment):

No Mac version as of this typing, though.

I just remembered that Bethesda hasn't made a major game since 2017. What happened to AAA gaming? How is it profitable to create only one game in 5 years and sell it for 70 dollars? I know micro transactions are where the *real* money is at, but I almost never spend any money on them. And if I would it would max out at like 10 dollars.
This is all wrong

I might actually buy it, how is the gameplay? Will wait for the App Store version.

No Man's Sky is a must play. You have a large procedurally generated universe to explore. Procedurally generated large planets, with unique flora and fauna. Ruins or civilizations on planets, bases to build, ships to collect, pirates and bounty hunters to fight, mechs and land vehicles to drive, space armadas you can establish, and of course with the option to go solo or with others. Be explorer, trader, or conquerer

"Bethesda hasn't made a major game since 2017"

So we're gonna ignore Doom Eternal, Hi Fi Rush, Arkane's Prey, Ghostwire Tokyo, Deathloop, and Rage 2?

Hell Hi Fi Rush is one of my favorites this year.
