My wife's contract has been up for a while and her plan is still $70 / month. AT&T has always claimed that part of the 70 was to subsidize her phone yet her contract is up and they refuse to lower the bill so, I ignore the subsidy crap because her plan will always be $70 with or without a contract.

What that means is your wife is still paying the subsidy without having the benefit of a new phone. Essentially, it's throwing away money.

If you don't believe that the subsidies were built into the contracts, you can read the relevant SEC filing from AT&T.

How many millions of users on old 2 year plans are considered "minority"?
Over 15 Million customers, but personally I think the real number is way more than that.
Is that a number to snub?
As of 2Q 2015:

77% of AT&T's post-paid (i.e. billed monthly) customers are on a Mobile Share Value plan.
Only 37% of AT&T's post-paid customers on Mobile Share Value plans are using Next.

13% of AT&T's post-paid customers still have unlimited.

So in other words, when folks on here post about using Next on a Mobile Share Value plan, that post has an almost 8 out of 10 chance of being read by an AT&T customer actually on a Mobile Share Value plan.

The number of folks on the Mobile Share Value plans grew by 38% year over year. If that rate continues, it's going to make folks on the old Unlimited/Family plans even more rare than they currently are.

Or at least that's what att is really praying will happen. :D
I know there's millions of subscribers stiil using 2 year subsidy plans.
Don't think that's an amount of customers att wants to offload to T-Mobile ;)
Out of 124 million subscribers
23% is still on 2 year subsidized contracts non mobile share plans.
So over 28.5 million customers.
Is that a big deal to AT&T? I think so...

We never thought we never see the unlimited raised to 22GB or Family Talk converted to unlimited. Never say never. If AT&T really wanted to do away with 2-year contracts they would have just simply dropped it all together.

I am working on how to add my two kids.. Right now, I have FT 700 (unlimited), 2 UDP, plus grandparents.

Base, $149 - after taxes.

My current plan is to put the kids on Ptel, $25 each, unlimited everything @ 2G data. This is a T-mo MVNO.

That brings me up to $199.

If I try to add them to my AT&T plan, it kicks me over to Mobile Share. If I go 10GB(15GB) that will cost $238, with two phones on contract. If I kick the parents over to TracFone for $16, and buy phones outright, this cost drops down to $169.

I liked when things were simpler. I paid $134/mo and every year shell out $469 for a new phone.

Best explanation I've seen yet. Why do people keep trying to confuse the discounts when users are still on the older FamilyTalk / Unlimited plans. I plan on keep using 2 year contract until it's no longer available. Then I will most likely buy outright. For now I'm saving myself $450+ dollars. Even my local AT&T store tells me to keep the plan I have. It's cheaper.

Same here. I'll ride the 2 year subsidies as it's no longer available.

i have a six line plan on mobile share it's $100 for 15GB plus $15 per line access charge plus the Next payments. $160 for 6 lines before paying for phones. $130 if I go to T-Mobile which i'm not going to do
