As an ex-employee it sounds like a load of cobblers. If the stock is in the central warehouse there's no way they can't release it as it belongs to DSG. They've probably ramped stocks down having got the iPad 2 launch date wrong.

Last time I went to the store I used to work in they still had the 1995 era logo's up around the store. It was like a exhibit in a museum of fallen tech companies!

Star, Borland, Wordstar, Claris ... the list went on.

My local store has recently reopened as one of the new Currys / PC World super stores.

They have a large prominent Apple 'shop' with iPads, all the latest laptops, iMacs and the new Apple TV all on demo. The staff are all Apple trained, wear Apple clothing and seem extremely knowledgeable on all things Apple.

I know it's fashionable to knock them but I can't fault the service I've had there.

PCW is one of those subject that can be discussed until the end of ... something a long way away.

Generally speaking the salesdrones are motivated by one thing only - sales figures. Can be store turnover, or in my day commission to bolster their pay packet. The number of pushy types vastly outnumber the ones with product knowledge. I worked with some very good people and some very knowledgable people. The problem is the initial impression comes from the pushy salesdrone. The support staff were always decent if a tad undertrained, but then I'm slightly biased.

I can see the value in PCW offering an Apple Shop within the store if there's no Officlal Apple Store in the vicinity. I'll go take a look next time I'm passing. Last time I checked there was a dingy corner with some old range MBPs being flogged off at full price.

The big tech companies (Epson, HP, Apple, Toshiba etc) in my time there supplied reps at the weekends, usually when a new range was launched or there was a promotion on. They'd demonstrate the kit, talk to the customers and check with the Tech Staff if the customer had unusual equipment. They used to sell a boat load of kit when they were in and we got happy customers.

When the original iMac launched it generated what would now bee seen as the traditional apple buzz. Some bright spark at head office had the foresight to get an Apple Rep to to our Store to demonstrate the kit. The initial delivery sold out within a half a day and we had people on a waiting list for a couple of months. He was back every weekend for a good 6 months. Same happened again with the iBook Clamshell.

I wouldn't trust anything an employee of pc world, curries or dixons said. Ive never experienced such bad customer service anywhere else. I actually vowed to never buy a single thing from them again after last time.

Also - if you check PC World website they are in stock - available for collect at store or home delivery.

Just another store salesperson making up their own stories - probably wanted to sell a Galaxy Tab

Went to PC Shed in new oscott (Birmingham) for a DVD writer the other week. Actually it did surprise me as I wasn't hassled by staff and the lady on the desk was friendly.

Price was ok as well. I find if you need a part like a DVD writer quickly then they're not too bad. For everything else I'd avoid.

My local branch, too, and I'd agree with everything you said.

Ditto Bestbuy, except the staff at Bestbuy are actually Apple employees. The new Currys superstores have taken a (small) leaf from how Apple conducts its sales with a Windows section laid out like an Applestore, except the hodgepodge of varying makes, colours and styles of laptops doesn't quite have the same impact.

I'm calling BS on this. Especially the bit about Apple not letting them sell the ones already in the warehouse. The iPads are the property of PC World (or whatever the company is registered as), there can be contractual restrictions but I very much doubt to that degree.

The thread dates back to June. It was wrong then and is still wrong now. :)

I loathe PC world, they employ people with sub par product knowledge, but will just fill in the missing gaps of their knowledge with made up stuff to get a sale.

However I cant say my experience with apple store staff has led me to believe that they're particularly knowledgeable either

Bought my Apple TV from the PC World / Currys store in Preston last night as i couldnt be bothered driving to the Trafford Centre, the apple section there is much improved since the revamp. Only thing i could complain about really is the fact that they fix the laptops to the display so you can lift a MBA for example to feel how light it is.

As for the staff i never bother with them, i read about what i want and go in for a part number, some odd PC World / Currys deals cannot be beaten tbh so i dont see why people wont buy from them, its the same product as everywhere else and if the price is right, who cares, just do your homework first and dont expect advice!

Becuase of their reputation for after sales support.
