I'm debating on this phone being my first phone I don't use screen protectors on. The only thing i'm super nervous about is the accumulation of surface scratches over time.

Is that even still really a thing? I don't ever put my phone in my pocket with other things (like keys/wallet etc...) but still worried they will show up somehow.

thoughts?

I think we are past the time where you need to worry about keys in your pocket (although I still wouldn’t recommend that) or setting it face down in fear.

My 14 pro always had a protector on and I dropped it 2-3 times over the course of 2 years in a way that had I not had the tempered protector it would have gotten scratched. Now scratched or cracked like the screen protector no…. One time I dropped it and it landed face down in gravel. The screen protector cracked in a couple places, and I think had the screen protector not been on there there would at least have been a small little needle sized mark on the screen. I want a perfect screen.

I used to always use a screen protector and a case as well as upgrade my iPhone every year. About three or four years ago, I decided to stop using screen protectors and just rely on AppleCare to replace the screen if needed. I usually replace the screen halfway through my usage cycle just so I can get a fresh oleophobic coating. Since doing this, I have never noticed any scratches that bothered me.

I’m usually very careful with my phone but sometimes I accidentally put my phone in the same pocket as my keys and the one time it scratches the damn screen. Thankfully I use screen protectors and therefor I simply replace it.

I used to use screen protectors religiously. I shattered the one I put on my 14 pro max and ended up never replacing it. My phone is perfectly fine without one. It’s survived numerous drops including a 20 foot drop onto concrete. No scratches or cracks. Not going to bother using them anymore *knock on wood*

I never used a screen protector in my life. Had every iPhone since the 5 and never had any serious scratches. But then again, I take care of my things. I’m on the 16 Pro Max now, no protector. Oh and I never had Apple Care ever either lol.

Im very sure your screen has micro scratches that you just didn't see yet especially when you dropped it a few times already.

Do you change your screen protector every time you mark it?

Maybe it’s just me. But my iPhones have always been abused. Caseless, no screen protector, and used as the tool that they are.

Face down on tables, stood in car door pocket, in my pocket with keys, thrown in a bag with sports equipment in.

No cracks, no breaks.

Sure there’s now quite a few scratches but the phone is now over 3 years old and still perfectly usable. Scratches only visible if you look for them at certain angles in direct light.

I don’t understand the comment, or the logic behind it.

If I said yes, would you then say “yes”well you can replace the actual screen too….”

If I said no, would you say “the why bother with a screen protector just live with the tiny scratches you’d get on the screen protector....”

If I get a bunch of scratches, or I replace the screen protector after a drop, $8-15 is much better, cost effective and convenient solution over the cost of a new screen. On my 14pro, I dropped it a handful of times screen down and it cracked the screen protector. It likely would not have cracked the actual screen but it might have received some pretty significant scratches that the screen protector saved.

What I can say is my screen on a 16 pro max in less than a week has a couple 1mm scratches on the screen, close to the edge bezel adjacent to usb-c area. No idea how they got there. I noticed while installing a screen protection. Isn’t that ironic.

I don’t think the new screens are as scratch resistant as phones in the past. I certainly don’t want a scratched screeb when I sell the phone in 1-2 years for 80% of what I paid to get a new phone. A scratched screen and case severely diminishes value, even if it’s perfectly functional. If you’re a person who uses the same phone for 6 years, cares zero about scratches and dents as long as it works, then skip the screen protector and a case too. Live yo life!

Do you need to have major damage for them to replace the screen under AC+?

You definitely will get micro scratches in the screen coating even if you don't drop the phone. However, it's unlikely you actually see them unless the screen is off and you're inspecting under light. I think it really depends on whether or not you're okay with that. I think a well made glass protector can look pretty invisible. The only downside is how fragile they can be to chipping/cracking. I use my phones naked and broke a couple in the first few months of owning the 14pro and decided to stop using them and just rely on AppleCare if any major damage happened.

Apple Care + will not replace repair your phone if there are scratches, gouges, small cracks in the back glass. They will require damage to be debilitating to the use of the phone.

From what height does a phone have to drop to be debilitated? Just asking…

if I had a job in an office maybe I’d think about not using one but in a construction job it gets a screen protector on as soon as it comes out of the box

If you’re OCD about your phone, get a screen protector. But if you’re not, try it without. I haven’t had a screen protector in a while.

I've been rocking my pro 15 without a SP and there are scratches all over, mainly the edges of the screen but yeah... Really not sure how.... I don't put it in my pocket with keys or anything. I got apple care+ so I can replace it eventually when it uh breaks, but in hindsight wish I just got a SP because the scratches are annoying

My primary use for screen protectors now is actually to protect the oleophobic coating. For whatever reason, my fingers cause it to wear off quicker than normal, resulting in the glass always being covered in smudges that don't really wipe away. Much easier to put on a new protector with a fresh coating than try to fix the phone's glass itself (I'm yet to find one of those sprays/solutions that really work).

Not to mention, many of the scratches on the screen you see aren't to the glass, but rather the coating anyway.

Yes, they do require damage to the screen. That is why I pack a hammer and safety glasses when I go. My previous phone (14 Pro) took that hammer like a champ! I had to hit it at least 5-6 times as hard as could with the pointed end of the claw before it relented. A couple of hours later I walked out with a fresh screen.

Ha, quick and clean.

im only not using a SP because i have yet to find one that fits the 16PM well

The Spigen protector fits perfectly and has a great applicator, one of the best. Its not one of the cheaper options but its not too bad. The edge of it is past the bezel edge too so you don't end up with the glass edge right on the edge of the screen.
