Sand can scratch glass pretty easily - that and diamond jewlery. There's nothing that pisses me off more then a scratch on my screen...it drives me nuts.

I even get OCD about leaving the camera lense, and the home button naked.

I cut a little circle of screen protector to put on my home button as well!

lol...

I took my SP off and scratches to the coating started appearing a couple weeks after (always make sure nothing else is in the pocket with the phone), but I don't care. Naked glass feels and looks so much better. I rather save all the money I would spend on SPs for a replacement screen for when the scratches really builds up and I can't take it anymore.

Edit - I do have a cheap SP for the back as my phone is always in a case and it's not something I'll see or feel

I'm done with screen shields. I get them on perfectly everytime, but I love the feel of the glass and "It takes a lot to scratch a 4"

How's this 'experiment' (if I may call it that :p) going?

Gawd, how I loathe screen protectors. Doesn't matter if they're good quality ones, crappy cheap eBay ones, high end Brand Name... The whole installation adventure and "hoping" it works with a case without it lifting it up/bubbling drives me nuts.

The day we don't need screen protectors for our (hopefully pseudo-glass) type interfaces will be a relief -- and a bomb to those in the SP business, I suppose.

EDIT: I realize we don't need a SP on our devices, but I'm still choosing to use one at the moment.

I used a screen protector for 2 years on my iphone 3. Dropped over and over, never got a scratch. I got cocky and went naked for the last 6 months, and it picked up scratch after scratch. Keys, dirt, drops. I think they do really add not just protection, but strength as well.

I had a PS anti-glare on my new iPhone 4. Yesterday, I was horrified when I opened my locker at the gym, and it had a tremendous gouge. It had fallen and got trapped under the hinge in the locker. I mean, the thing was torn on an edge and scraped to the point of being white. I peeled off the protector with trepidation, and the glass is pristine, not even a scuff.

I got home and immediately applied the throw-away incipio shield that came with an old case, and am going to re-order either the PS or perhaps the SGP oleo (really want the fingerprints gone).

I am a believer - will never go shield-less again.

Wow what a story, glad to hear your phone was protected though. Another win for screen shields. And definitely grab the oleo SP next, it's amazing, I love it.

I have a bumper and carbon sticker on the back, no screen protector on the front. Have a few minute scratches but nothing major, did drop my phone on the road a few months ago and have a slight chip in the top corner but the bumper has covered it up now, so can't see it.

I wish i can get myself to use no screen shield. I had the anti glare but it just degrades the screen, so i went to a crystal. You know how many times i did that and how much money ive been spending on plastic lol.. For some reason im like this with only apple products LOL.

Haha, It's fine to try new things. :)

I dropped mine but it landed not to hard it was still playing when I picked it up. But it depends on how hard it lands since if falls like 4 feet from a table then expect something cracking. :D

I'm with you Austin....I just removed my SP yesterday and loving the naked glass :D

I didn't use a SP from June of last year until about January this year then put one on for a little extra peace of mind but with my phone carrying habits I realized I don't need a SP and took it off yesterday. I feel...so....free :p

I really dont understand people going naked. The good screen shields like SGP Crystal dont even show on the phone but protects against scratches and mild drops.

When i first purchased my Iphone 4 last september, i dropped it from my couch to the wood floor (approx 2 feet). it was the 2nd day i had it and i didnt have time to put a shield on it. Well the front glass cracked. One hairline crack. Thank God Apple replaced it. They said the one hairline was covered by the warranty but a shatter wouldnt have been covered. Im convinced if a had a shield on the front, it wouldnt have cracked like that.

I have front and back SGP on my Iphone 4 and no one can tell its there including me.

Dont take the risk, trust me, its not worth it.

While it is mostly true that good shields aren't THAT visible, they are in fact visible. You can see the lines around the cutouts, no doubting that. True that they will shield the screen against scratches, but it highly depends on how YOU use your phone. Mine is always on my desk at work, in my pocket, or on a end table at home, therefore not really standing a chance at getting scratched. The glass is durable (the coating isn't as durable as the glass and that's where people get scratches). I had my phone since late June of last year and didn't get any scratches except for one very very very shallow one that can only be seen under direct sunlight. I put a SP on a month ago or so, and it did in fact get scratched (the SP) but that occured from wiping it down with a MICROFIBER, clean microfiber. Kind of surprising nevertheless. I never had any issues scratching the coating/glass when it was 'naked'.

On to the SP, my power support crystal showed so many fingerprints, it was almost unbelievable. It was so bad (along with scratches), that I had to remove it and replaced it with a cheap eBay protector (which was better than the power support IMO. The power support was really difficult to wipe clean and had a rubbery feel when running my micro across it. The eBay protector cleaned much easier and had a smooth feel when cleaning with a micro. The eBay protector also showed less fingerprints and seemed to stay cleaner.

On to the naked glass, it cleans so incredibly easy and does not attract fingerprints and oils nearly as bad as any SP does. It is smoother than any SP i've tried, yes even the power support crystal.

As far as dropping your phone, that's all in the eye of the beholder and depends on the user...everybody is different with their usage and environment.

I wouldn't necessarily make a blanket statement to everybody stating that "Dont take the risk, trust me, its not worth it." This is not applicable to every user.

I could not agree more. I have owned different iPhones and finally I took my screen protector off my iPhone4 and it's the best thing I have done. Nothing compares to the original screen as I have tried many different screen protectors.

I agree. I have done what you have 2-3 times on my 4 and 3GS. I always end up putting the power support anti glare back on. Until I take it back off I'll enjoy my protection & matte finish.

Totally agree.

I put a ZAGG shield on my iPhone 4 when i got it and hated it from the start. Even though I followed the directions for installation, I hated the feel and look of it. Part of the appeal of the iPhone is the slick glass surface. Covering it up destroys that. I have a sturdy case that covers the back because who needs the back exposed? I've dropped it a few times, including once on a paved parking lot. The case got nicked, but the glass was not damaged. I'm not convinced that thin piece of plastic is going to protect the glass from cracking. People who claim the glass feels the same with a shield on it have probably never used a clean phone without a shield.

as far as if going naked damages it, what would you suggest..apple care for the iphone or insurance plan with your wireless provider? ....or possibly both

The screen is very scratch resistant but the oleophobic coating will wear out over time as stated in the manual.

I DID IT, i finally did it. After so much money wasted on various screen shields i finally today took it off once and for all. And wow what a difference, now it feels right... I will keep a BSE on the back and sides and either use a bumper, incase snap or pouch, still working on that decision.
But anyone on the fence about taking it off, trust me you will never look back.
