Hey, i had VisualHub for a while now, and its been working fine with no problem, until recently when they ended it. I converted a whole season of Lost just fine but some other random shows it screws up the audio syncing and some other shows it doesn't. This has never happened to me before and im pretty pissed off. Anyone know whats going on?

If it helps any, I think he left the support forums open for awhile longer, so you might try there.

Worst money I spent...

I paid for it as well but didn't get as much use out of it as I thought I would. Nevertheless when I do use it, VisualHub is still the fastest around. I'm always impressed how fast it does two-pass encoding. It's good to see HandBrake will be picking up the slack in some ways.

An especially apt dialog box:

Excellent post :)

I did NOT get my money's worth. VH was significantly slower than Handbrake. VH screwed up Subtitles. VH froze my computer on a number of occasions. VH couldn't encode a fraction of movies that Handbrake could.

Can't even commit suicide correctly.

This is like putting a bullet into the brain but missing the core and ending up paralyzed, drooling, unable to speak... yet able to think lucidly, always thinking "Kill me! Kill me! Please, nurse, kill me!"...

But unable to communicate anything with anyone and living another 40 years attached to machine until the power goes out one day because someone plus three microwaves onto the same circuit and the machine stops... before anyone notices you drown on your own vomit.

Brilliant.

Visualhub Loss

I too have used Visualhub for several years and paid the registration fee. It will be greatly missed. The developer quit "for personal reasons", and this is sad. Perhaps rather than concentrating on how this affects us, we should remember him and wish him well. Sounds like he may be going through some bad times. Good luck and peace to him.

other software which would do the same?

Is there any other software which would do what visualhub did?

First of all lets look at the realities of the situation.

VisualHub was an interface to ffmpeg/x264/etc which did all the heavy lifting behind the scenes. VisualHub itself did an impressive job of analyzing the video that was put into it to provide the correct command line options to ffmpeg/x264/etc, but that is basically all it did in Leopard.

Handbrake 0.9.3 (unstable testing quality build available here) will have many VisualHub like features when it is released. It will use ffmpeg/mencoder/x264/etc libraries and tools to become a general purpose decoder instead of being just for DVDs. This would have been stiff competition for VisualHub as the programs could easily provide equal support for video formats as they rely on the same open source technologies to do the heavy lifting.

VisualHub $24.99
Handbrake $0.00

It isn't hard to see that this could have been a death blow for VisualHub in the larger market.

It is all water under the bridge now, but I do like to speculate about what could have been.

Well at least I'm glad to find that both are now in hands of SourceForge...... hope the guys there rock it out!

<siiiiiiiiiiiggggggghhhhhhhh>

VisualHub, AudialHub, and iSquint have been discontinued

iSquint is really a good video converter for mac. but...........

Just found out about this and am very disappointed. I chose VH over handbrake quite a while ago so I won't be happy about having to use it once VH becomes obsolete. I can't even remember why I didn't like handbrake, maybe it is better now?

How is VisualHub obsolete? Did it stop working? Mine still works great.

There are some recent pages to ffmpeg and x264 that really do hurt it a bit. VisualHub's backend software won't be updated again while Handbrake's builds are incorporating the latest patches.

Hopefully the open source projects will get some traction.

I've exclusively used VisualHub for quite a long while, so I'm pretty disappointed with the news. I find it pretty irrisponsible for a developer to close up shop from even paying customers without offering a means of downloading it again. Oh well, I look forward to the next major release of Handbrake.

Glad to hear the project has found a new home. :)

so is VisualHub going to be made free like iSquint? Techspansion isnt hosting the downloads but you can find iSquint on updates sites that host like MacUpdate. so if you download VisualHub from a hosted site how are you supposed to activate it? or does one have to torrent it (shouldnt be illegal as its now abandoned).

Yes

You're my hero. Let us know when it's available again!

We don't know why he's bailing.
He could be sick.
He could be going to jail.
He could be having psychotic episodes (might be, considering his humor).
We may never know.

Sigh... Sorry guys and gals,
Sadly me and Tyler (original developer) got off to a bad start. I simply asked him how to code formats into VisualHub... i mean FilmRedux... and he said I was the reason he shut down the Forum. Would anyone like to be one of my spys and ask him how? Sorry. BTW... I do have PunyVid working! more details at my forum here
