No New Apple TV Coming Next Week, But Apple Will Upgrade Software

I'm confident that an updated Apple TV will be announced today. At a minimum, I'm confident that it will support 802.11ac. I suspect it will also include an upgrade from A5 to an A6 or A7 processor and an upgrade from 512MB of RAM to 1GB. I hope it includes an upgrade to HDMI 2.0.

BTW, I expect the Airport Express will also be updated today, with 802.11ac.

Apple really should differentiate ATV content based on country. In that case, a BBC iPlayer app on UK Apple TVs would be welcome.

I so disagree. I want to be able to get that same BBC iPlayer app from every iTunes store in every country: China, India, Kosovo, Israel, Canada, Japan, etc. I hate that I need to have an iTunes account in several different countries.

I know you posted this before it was announced, but it looks like Sony is rolling with this idea. The VitaTV is looking nice at a really competitive price point. Streaming PS4 games to any TV in the home if you have a PS4 sounds really good too. Sony wont be able to compete currently with the streaming options Apple has going on, but we will see. Sony did strike a deal with Viacom recently so if the VitaTV can make use of that all, Apple may have some work cut out for them.

BTW, lol at mediocre touchscreen. Resistive touch screens are much better for gaming. Far more accurate. I'll take the 3DS screens and the WiiU gamepad screens for general gaming any day of the week. Having no multitouch kind of sucks, but it makes up for that with accuracy.

Well, the WiiU touchscreen is 854x480, so maybe "mediocre" was a little strong - but that's not an impressive resolution these days. In my experience, capacitive accuracy < resistive accuracy with a finger - but it's the opposite with a stylus.

As for the VitaTV, I was pretty surprised by the announcement. It will be interesting to see if Sony can bolster their streaming options and use this to increase PS4 sales. Personally, I hope that it causes Nintendo to go the other way - and let you play 3DS games on the WiiU (using the gamepad). Then, it makes a TON of sense to have put a resistive screen on the gamepad...

Totally agree. It seems such a no-brainer to open it up to developers.
What worries me however is that Apple seems to be putting resources into adding their own apps, which is resource that could be spent doing a store instead!
If they wait for sales numbers to increase they may miss the boat; better to take a risk, bite the bullet and open it up.... Apple don't seem to be taking any risks at the moment which i think you need to do from time to time to innovate!

Not happening. Got an update, but, not iOS 7-esque, as expected it is a limited update, nice to have iBeacons update, for new people. Tap your iOS 7 device on top of Apple TV (gen 3) and it'll get most of your set-up info. from your iOS device.

Think back to pre-iPhone. Think back to pre-iPod. Now think about cable/sat/TV service...watching "channels"...AND how you use a TV, (surfing channels with the remote, recording and all that). OK, now, think different. That is what Apple is developing. Not an Apple TV with an App store, but a TV experience that is entirely different from what we have now.

Go back to page 3 of this thread and read my post there (3rd one down from top). ...too many rumors of Apple working on a whole new TV "experience"...in talks with studios...patents for glasses-free 3D, that senses where you are in the room...etc.

But, this will overturn Cable/Satellite TV business. Not happening soon. Probably early 2015. Maybe this time next year.

Don't count on anything major with Apple TV. Apple is going to change the whole game, and eventually drop the current set-top box Apple TV.

You're thinking too short-term. It's not arrogant, it's just reality. Apple's not going to mess with their long-term plans for TV. I've watched the rumors for years...Apple is working on something that will overtake TV watching industry as a whole. When Apple TV came out, the reviewers said that Apple was doing the set-top box as if it was a secondary thing. It is more of a learning experience for Apple. They won't add an App store to Apple TV and make it like other iOS devices, that's nothing more than a pipedream. There are no legit rumors to support this line of thinking. Apple is working on something much bigger, much more long term than the set-top box, something entirely new. They will eventually dump the set-top box Apple TV.

Apple will come out with a new TV experience that will overtake the market just like iPod & iTunes took over MP3 & CD world. The way you subscribe to cable TV and the way it all works is going to be obsolete in a few years. They will directly compete with Comcast, Dish, Netflix and all of 'em...using only the internet. This might have an app store, should be good for gaming. Add multiple players via iOS devices in the room, now you've got something new here. (Remember when Scrabble first came out for iPad...use iPhone/iPod touch for tiles? Now add wii (iWatch). ). ...The internals of the current Apple TV are less than an iPad 2, just enough to stream 1080p vid, that's about it, I don't think it'd be good for Apple to add an app store, it would show how sluggish it would be. (Reality check: It has a single-core A5, while the iPad 2 has a dual-core A5).

If anything, Apple will design an API for developers that have the Apple TV be used as the main screen/secondary screen or full out screen using an iOS device, kind of like what Real Racing 2 and 3 and some other games/applications do already
