I don't know if there are any dock related rumors, but letting others manufacture accessories would definitely cost Apple money. It would be cool, but Apple would probably lose more money than if they limited this to BT, even the use of a physical KB or game controls.

People pay to get certification. Apple's cut in accessories would be good.

How could it cost Apple money? Why?

Look at the page by Apple - they're putting Accessories on a par with

- In App Purchase
- Apple Push Notification service
- Peer to Peer Connectivity
- Maps
- iPod Library Access

Enhance your accessory by developing an iPhone app to extend its functionality, or create entirely new integrated solutions that combine an iPhone app with dedicated hardware. For example, you can display a fully interactive Multi-Touch equalizer for your speaker system. Create an inventory app for your barcode reader. Or, build an app that logs and tracks the readings from an attached heart-rate monitor. The potential solutions are limitless.

Create your own protocol.

Apple provides the information, companies pay up to join, NDA, then work on an accessory, and Apple can then approve or not. Your Bose music station already does this. Your MobiJuicer battery pack etc.

I added a couple of lines to my last post, I agree it's all really possible, I was only thinking Apple makes a lot of money with its sort of expensive accessories, cable and what not. Whether other manufacturers pay royalty fees and such, it's still possible for Apple to sell less of its own accessories, in time it would mean major costs and prices. They did try and complicate, not sure if on purpose, compatibility with previous generations' accessories..

There most certainly WILL be a new iPhone out this summer. Has Apple ever gone a year without updating the iPod?... I didn't think so.

Front page rumour seems to think so. Keeping the same shape makes sense in several ways.

Sneaky sneaky devils. I hadn't thought of that, but you're absolutely right. It would explain why we haven't seen leeked shots. They don't exist! I hope its all internal. I can deal with the slick backing as long as there is a hardware increase. Maybe it will be the iPhone Pro? Maybe like the Samsung Propel and Propel Pro? Hmmmm....

Same size and shape... but what about material? They said nothing about "Same weight and same finish".... muahahahahahaha! I hope they bring metal back or matte plastic.

Metal back would be ideal IMHO. Just without the inherent signal strength hinderance. :( Maybe if the area where the antenna is it were a material similiar to metal, was better for the strength, but it wasnt noticable to the consumer?

What if they did something similar to the iPod touch where there's a plastic spot embedded into the metal housing except paint it the same color as the metal so it doesn't stand out as much? I wish the iPhone could look like the MacBook Pro but, still have a decent signal... hehe.

Exactly! I love the metal backing, but I'll take plastic if it will be better for my signal. If they could have great signal strength and a metal back, Apple, my wallet is open for you.
