Amen brother! People on these forums keep talking about waiting for Nehalem updates next year as that will be the "real" update but most people ain't gonna notice a damn difference. The previous Santa Rosa, the current Penryn, the forthcoming Montevina and the future Nehalem MBPs will all load Safari quick enough (is clicking on the dock icon and it coming up more or less "instantly" not good enough for people?) and let you browse the web at the same speed.

Ditto for listening to music, using iWork, iPhoto and most importantly of all, Calculator and TextEdit! Unless you're using your MBP for processor intensive tasks, such as video editing or gaming, it just won't matter. I reckon that most people who own a MBP hardly stretch its processing capabilities at all. They just like the idea of having high specs and the latest technology whether they need it or not; the same for many people who put 4GB in their machines.

I know what you mean. For the majority, it probably won't be that important. However, it totally depends on what you need to do. I maxxed out my iMac so that I have plenty of RAM available for my virtual machines. I almost considered a Mac Pro so that I'd have more than 4GB at my disposal but I know that for now, I can get away with doing my stuff on the iMac and the PCs I still own. I plan to get a Mac Pro next year with at least 10GB RAM so I can clear out my garage of a few PCs. Therefore, I am hoping that by then a redesigned case and new displays are gonna be on sale. No matter if they aren't though.

What model is that exactly, and who sells it? Just checked Best Buy and Circuit City and neither of them sell a laptop with anything close to those specs - Toshiba or otherwise - (I haven't even heard of Toshiba already offering a blu-ray drive yet after dropping HD-DVD as an option in their laptops), and certainly not for $999.

My bad. It was two weeks ago in Best Buy's ad and it was $1,099, not $999.

Still, what model though? The specs you describe don't match up with anything I've seen Best Buy selling (nothing currently comes close to it); most of the stuff from Toshiba Best Buy sells right now usually features much lesser processors than 2.5GHz Penryns, especially in the 15" range, and as far as I know, Toshiba hasn't started putting blu-ray drives in their laptops yet (and if they did, $1099 would be an incredibly low price for one).

The closest I can even find is the currently $1249 Toshiba A305 here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8770582&type=product&id=1203815723071

Which does have a 400GB drive (or specifically one 5400RPM 200GB drive and one 4200 RPM drive), 4GB of RAM, but only a 2.1GHz T8100, a regular multiformat DVD+-RW drive, only a 1280x800 screen, a Radeon HD3470, is 1.5" thick and weighs 6 pounds.

This doesn't quite match up with a similar model with a blu-ray drive and a 9400M GS for only $1099.

Right. The parent of HD-DVD is implementing Blu-ray within 2 months of an estimated half-billion lost in the format wars!

In the future your argument will find better ground in truth.

It was the ad two weeks ago and it might have been an Asus and not a Toshiba. I don't keep the ads to refer to. I was in error about the price, as I pointed out.

In the future you might be less pompous, but probably not.

I think you're thinking of the Asus M50Sv-X2:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8761217&type=product&id=1202650467562

2.5GHz Core 2 Duo T9300, 1280x800 screen, 250GB HD, GeForce 9500M graphics, 2GB of RAM. Currently priced at $1349, so if they had it on sale 2 weeks ago for $150 off, $1099 would make sense.

Note that this does not have a blu-ray drive, it's only got a 1280x800 screen, and it weighs 6.7 pounds and is 1.5" thick. Note the GeForce 9500M is not dramatically better performance wise than the 8600M GT.

For what it's worth, you can find configurations of the Asus M50S with a blu-ray drive online for a simlar price (i.e. http://www.directron.com/m50svb1.html) although they do that partially by dropping the CPU down to a T8100.

Note that Asus is also notorious for terrible battery life on their laptops.

Even at a sale price of $1099, this is a decent laptop, but compared to the much lighter and thinner MBP (with a higher res LED-backlit screen)

Since you brought it up as something that was more desirable than an MBP, I kind of have to wonder what specifically it is about this model that you find appealing.

Well, I screwed that up, didn't I. Sorry folks. My bad. Nothing intentional.
