I just watch this:
Yes and what Apple claimed after failed is just to save face, the face ID did fail hard on stage, and it looks like sweating would screw it up.
I have oily face so do I need to wash my face every time before I try to pass through the face ID? This face ID doesn't practical at all, especially someone needs to swipe it upward at the same time which is so waste of time.

I am a bit skeptical on this whole new weird "oil screws it up" thing. Frankly, this is not new technology MS did this with the Surface Pro 4's and newer. Intel has cameras embedded in monitors you can buy that do this. All Apple has done is refine it for iOS devices. But having used these 3D mapping cameras your face being wet does not affect it. I can come in after mowing my lawn and doing yard work in August and my Surface Pro unlocks just fine. I do have other concerns but those are more on the practicality and usability aspect of having to look at your phone and swipe up to use it.

This whole oil/sweaty face thing to me is just made up malarky.

Just watch the video and you see how he get off the sweat before trying with the backup phone. He knows everything of the software.

And...may be Microsoft found out how to solve it...doesn't mean Apple finds it out.

Yeah exactly. They definitely tested in rain. Also their product page has the person coming out of the pool to use it. CF was just sweaty himself or maybe he had too much makeup on. I guess that could throw it off.

Correct, apple's statement isnt true, or partily.
I believe some people messed with it before the demo but he still had one attempt before the X asked for the passcode. That attempt failed while it wasn't supposed to fail.

Let's just chill and see what situations it actually does work in when it releases.
