Do you think I'm blind? I obviously saw your profile pic ;). Which ATT you going to?

I don't really know a good one or even what's considered a major one. Only one I even know of that looks to be of a decent size is the one on 745 Broadway. Problem with that is that it's right next to NYU which houses lots of little trust fund babies who have nothing better to do at 3AM than to line up for the next iPhone.

Okay so I just called in, and the guy I spoke to said we will most likely be able to get them carrier locked, but off contract, but won't be able to buy them unlocked. He pretty much said he doesn't want to give me a definitive answer, and to keep checking back, but that is most likely the case.

I just called and they said we can still purchase them carrier locked at the apple store fifth avenue, so I guess I'll be staying on line there, until I hear otherwise.

When I called last Thursday night to see about pre-ordering a carrier-locked, off-contract phone on Friday at midnight, I was told that I couldn't. The phone agent said, "You'll have to go into a store on Friday the 21st." I'm assuming/hoping that's the case. If I find out definitively, I'll post back.

Yeah I was actually surprised to hear they would not sell the phones locked but at full price. Guess I'm going to the SoHo store then. I'll call to confirm on Wednesday, hopefully they'll have answers squared out by then.

Yeah, a friend and I are planning on lining up at fifth avenue Thursday. The problem is that I don't want to line up for nothing, I'm hoping they would be willing to let me get one if I waited that long.

Keep us posted! Thanks. I plan to see if I can get a no-contract phone around the 10th so I can return my on-contract phone during the rescission period.

That's fine. If you pay full price, you can still file a request with AT&T to unlock the.

That's also my plan. Off contract and a locked phone on launch day is fine for me. I'm well eligible for $199 (16GB) contract pricing, but I just don't feel like having another 2-yr contract.

no contract verizon

i just pre-ordered iphone 5 with Verizon no contract cause Of the unlimited data. should be delivered october 5. but I have a pre-order with apple coming on the 21st.

I know, but really they told me today, yes there will be unlocked phones on launchday, wheter off contract or unlocked I dont know, but I asked for unlocked and they confirmed!

Can I ask why? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get subsidized and cancel whenever you want?

ETF Is $350 first month, So $199+350 = ~$550
iPhone out of contract = ~$699??

There will be no Factory unlocked IPhones available at launch at the retail level this year, even if you buy Apple care Plus and register it and the phone. Apple wants to combat scalpers this year and this is how they have decided to handle it. I ordered mine to late in the day so mine will arrive October 11 to the 17th

Keep Apple may change thier mind but I doubt it. It should be interesting on Friday when people who have not heard the fact that Apple Canada has made this change and have waited all night. Apple needs to put signs up at the retail level.

If I line up on Friday and buy a carrier locked AT&T off contract, do you think I could recoup the full price on Oct 5 when my preorder comes in?

I'm thinking of doing it without canceling the preorder...if something goes wrong at the store I will still get it Oct 5, and if I get it at the store I'm hoping I can sell the preorders when they get here.

Why would you pay the same price for a locked phone? Just wait a month!

Because you can ask AT&T to unlock it per their own policies. AT&T limits customers to 5 unlocks a year, so this move reduces the number of scalpers in line.

Makes sense but then you have a phone that is still locked to a carrier. That means if you want to switch to a different carrier, you cannot unless there is a current jailbreak/unlock from iPhone Dev Team or whoever finds a way to jailbreak/unlock it.

The good news is that even though you have to wait another month, you're not prolonging your contract renewal and setting yourself up for a possible delay next time the next iPhone launches.

If I pay the ETF, I will lose the current number and unlimited data plan, right? Of course I can act as a total new AT&T subscriber/add a new line, then get a phone.

Since I'll be traveling by the end of next month, I would love to bring my iPhone 5. :D Sure my factory unlocked iPhone 4S will do the job just fine.

Then you would get a AT&T iPhone that doesn't do LTE overseas as the AT&T iPhone isn't the same phone Apple sells unlocked so spend more get less? Is that the plan?

I thought about that one too and looked up the Verizon (CDMA model A1429), but I'll end up paying $20 more on a 4GB data plan and Verizon may unlock the SIM portion after 60 days of service (?).

So far I don't think New Zealand has LTE yet, but one carrier in Hong Kong will utilize the Band 3 (1800Mhz spectrum)

Will Apple offer the GSM model A1429*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5) model as a factory unlock in US weeks after? Not to mention, there are more LTE bands than the chip inside the iPhone 5 can offer.

Usually they start selling unlocked models 3-4 weeks after release.

Guess I'll just wait. Last year launch was messy enough that AT&T activated 36 lines under my name and I spent 4 hours Friday and Saturday at the Apple Store.
