Honestly, what better way to get people using it than it make it pirate-able??

This could really help increase the rate of usage of iWork as compared to Office.

I say kudos Apple and I hope this works out! I've been trying out iWork 09, which is the first time for me trying out Pages and I have to say that it is sooooo much easier to use than Word. There was a little bit of a learning curve but when I stopped thinking that it was Word and started using my Mac application part of my mind everything just made sense.

Could these boxes just not have the serial number on them unlike the boxes will have when they start shipping. Maybe there is just a sticker on the back that was not on the boxes they saw.

I think it is in Apple's best long term interrest for iWork to be widely used. I remember readong an interview with some one at Microsoft who said that they thought pirated copies of Word actually helped Word becose a "standard". After all, Word's biggest "feature" is that everyone has a copy, so people buy mostly because of that feature.

You can also just using the trial version forever.

eBay is a good place to look for cheap iWork. It was $64 shipped the last I checked.

Weird that the demo needs a serial and the full version doesn't. I know it's b/c the trial needs to be activated but still weird. Good on Apple for trusting us and for us being so lawful....

I'm sure Apple have done the math - the amount lost due to 'lending' software doesn't exceed the amount it costs programmers/debuggers to implement as well as factoring in convenience. Apple make money off the hardware as well, so in theory, everyone has already paid SOMETHING to even be able to use iWork.

Not to mention the shear fact that some people who would've never bought a single license version because of the expense may actually purchase one (with the intent to share). I guess sales for family packs might go down a bit, but overall this is a win-win situation.

On the mac you are absolutely right. There is no reason whatsoever (other than the occasional formatting differences when you save from iWork to .doc, etc.) to buy Office, especially considering its obscene price. On a PC however, Office '07 actually has all the good features and could be considered worth the money... Though for the ~$300+ they want for it, there is a certainly an explanation as to why people like to pirate it... :D

Two words:

Track Changes.

This is great news. Any kind of serial number requirements or activation is always lame. Hopefully not too many people will abuse it.

Brilliant! (slowly coming out of exile after being suspended from this site for calling somebody a ...)

Has there ever been an explanation as to why those Windows features were removed from the Mac version?

I doubt that you can install iwork 09 on other mac too. What would be the point of selling a family pack?
By the way, Microsoft Office 08 doesn't have a serial nr...but it still doesnt work.

Its all about the honor system. You can very easily buy a single copy of Leopard and install it as many times as you want on as many macs you want. Same with iLife and iWork ('09 at least). They just trust us to do the right thing and buy the family packs if we plan on putting the software on multiple macs.

I'd like other opinions on installing iWork on multiple machines with a single user copy instead of a family pack.

If I'm the sole user of both a desktop and a laptop that makes me a "single user" so I have no problem doing a multiple install. Does this sound reasonable or does anyone think it requires multiple licenses to be purchased?

Why is this news NOW?

iWork 09 has been out in stores for several weeks at this point and no one has mentioned it until now?

I think the EULA states that you can install the software as many times as you want on one machine. I could be wrong though.

The grey area of software licensing IMHO.

You know, if I own 2 Macs onto which I want to install iWork 09 and I shall not use them concurrently, then I won't feel bad in buying one copy and installing it on both Macs.

TBO, I am in the same league. I use my Mac Pro at home most, but my MacBook Pro at work most. I have bought the boxed version of iWork, and have installed it on both. Maybe technically not completely legal, but I don't feel like a pirate.
Must admit, that I might buy the Mac Box set as-well anyway. That way, I feel that I have done my best. Yes, I will be installing 3 copies of iWork and iLife and Leopard on 3 different Macs. And I have 2 licenses of everything....

Track Changes

Two words:

Track Changes.

For the record, Track Changes has been working perfectly for me since Pages '08. My documents has always been circling from Pages on my Mac to Windows users, import and export everytime in collaboration.

Apparently in Pages '09, the compatibility is more seamless even. I'll just need a longer time of use to put it to test.

Good!

GOOD!

Look how much good all the serials and product keys have kept Microsoft software from being pirated!!!

Serials/Keys only irritate legal users, and does very little to stop piracy.
