For just streaming? Sure, but if Apple wants the ATV to be more than just an overpowered, but overpriced streaming box, they will need more storage.

Apple added Apple Arcade to tvOS, and it takes less than 6 large games from AA to fill a 32GB ATV, and about a dozen to fill a 64GB. This leaves some room for the OS, the one required Aerial SS, and a little for additional assets needed for some games.

Other streaming devices and gaming consoles have browsers, no good reason tvOS shouldn't. Just because you wouldn't use something, definitely doesn't make it a bad thing.

Every iPhone that is currently on the market has a camera. Why not use that.

It works now with AirPlay, but for some dumb reason, Apple won't allow landscape FaceTime on tvOS.

Apple could also add a remote camera for the ATV and other Apple devices.

The M1 Mac Mini doesn't have a camera either, but it does FaceTime just fine.
How does the Mac mini do FaceTime without a camera? Apple discontinued their USB FaceTime cameras years ago.

If you have a mic, you can FaceTime Audio. If you add a camera, you can FaceTime Video. Why couldn't the Apple TV work the same way? It already has a mic, and Apple could make a camera for it, or use an iPhone.

Apple never had an external USB Camera.

Sure did. Go back to 2005 or so.

Seems to me that the iDevice on the Belkin hook shown in the show today- Continuity Camera- could work as well hooked to a TV and wirelessly linking to AppleTV. When I saw that demo, I actually thought of that application FIRST because I've seen so many people seem to want that ability.

Putting a camera in AppleTV (box) is no good because that would demand that AppleTV is positioned in a very specific way very near center of the TV. Some people could do that and others could not.

The integrated soundbar/appleTV/FaceTime camera/router/popcorn maker/shave and a haircut machine/et all concept that keeps flying around assumes that many people want and/or use soundbars... and that when the AppleTV guts in the Soundbar reach end of useful life, apparently the owner will throw the whole thing out to upgrade. Seems pretty niche/wasteful/short-sighted to me.

The best option that seems like it works without possibly any hardware changes to AppleTV is what was demoed today... just hook the clip to the TV (instead of a monitor as demoed), insert iDevice (or perhaps only iPhones work?) and wirelessly FaceTime via that screen. If I wanted this feature, I'd just get a clip for the TV and another for the computer monitor and put the iDevice on whichever I wanted to use for that functionality at the time. Looks towards perfect in terms of working with pretty much any setup scenario, any speaker setup scenario, whether AppleTV is front & center or velcro'd behind the TV or off to the side in a cabinet, etc.

I'm actually surprised that THIS feature was not announced for AppleTV today but hope that it is in tvOS 16 (or 17 or 18).

Safari on an Apple TV 4K would be amazing.

You slip a nice Bluetooth keyboard and mouse in your coffee or side table drawer and whenever you want, surf the web from your couch on a device almost as fast as an iPad Pro 2018. For $180 you have an awesome family “computer” in the living room that is easy for parents to police as it’s out in the open.

I just installed tvOS 16 on my Apple TV 4K 2nd gen and haven't noticed anything new. However this developer beta 1 has some serious compatibility problems WiFi 6 (or 5G WiFi, I'm not sure) that it constantly loses network connection. Now I have to degrade back to tvOS 15 and that's gonna cost another few hours, let alone the setup after degrading.
I just have no idea why I even tried to upgrade in the first place.

Oh I did notice something new around family sharing. The control center (the interface shown when you long press the home button on the Siri remote) now shows accounts of your family members. There are some other new options in the Settings app as well.

How hard can it be to have a start screen with profile selection just like any other streaming service out there so that my kids don’t mess up my up next queue? I am not even asking for much… AppleTV still seems way too much of a hobby for my taste.

But Apple wants stuff to be usable without an 3rd party Accessoires. So out of the box how do people use safari with the remote? Doesn’t work. That’s why there will never be safari on Apple TV because it would be a bad experience for people that don’t have a keyboard.

But then the same argument could be made with Apple Arcade which requires a gaming controller to play anything on the Apple TV.
Long gone is that requirement for Siri remote support.

You cannot play any Apple TV games that require motion with the remote that comes with the Apple TV, and must have a third party controller:

I’m pretty sure that the real reason Apple doesn’t ship Safari on the Apple TV is money. Having a $180 “computer” could cannibalize sales of other much more expensive devices.

Any device with the ultra-wide camera (iPhone 11 onwards, iPad pro 2020 onwards) should work with Continuity Camera as this could support center stage to zoom and pan to focus of the people in shot.

Also hoping that profiles get implemented properly
  • When my wife selects her profile, all the streaming apps know it's her and load her profile (would need the streaming apps to be updated)
  • Option for media library to display shared libraries of all family members
  • A good way of knowing who is using the system (touch ID in remote / user of remote app / user selection screen on wake)

Have you signed up for the developers beta?
Hi, Yes. All the other are available via the AppleSeed site, and I have had the invitation email to download. But nothing there when I try.

Not true at all, now...
A lot of Apple Arcade games and other tvOS games require a third-party controller.

But, you are right, there was a time that this was true....
Apple went the opposite direction with the launch of the ATV4 and tvOS back in 2015, requiring all apps to be fully playable with the Siri Remote 1, and that was a disaster, killing any momentum the ATV4 had off of the success of the ATV2 and ATV3.

Not too long after the launch, Apple reversed the Siri Remote requirement after developers' complaints, but the damage was probably already done.

I always thought that it would give people the ability to purchased stuff out of the tvOS App Store, such as subs, movies, web app games, etc.

And Apple doesn't like that.

It would be nice for the consumer though.

For tvOS don’t you have to download the Beta via the Apple TV itself by enabling the Get Beta Updates option in the software update settings on the Apple TV?

IMO- overwhelmingly THIS. Since core computing tasks like email, internet browsing, texting, social media, image/music management, light gaming and even Apple-exclusive apps like Pages etc can all be used through a browser, a good browser experience on AppleTV would likely be equivalent to a Mac Mini Jr. for many... possibly-to-probably "good enough" to not really need a dedicated computer or even iPad with keyboard.

Thus, not only is Safari not available but Apple does not allow anyone else to offer a browser for AppleTV either. If Apple didn't want to bother modifying Safari for iOS to work as Safari for tvOS (which doesn't seem like it should be a great leap), they could allow any of the other browser makers to offer their browser for tvOS. They don't. Why not? Probably for the above reasoning. Else, a browser would definitely make AppleTV much more useful... which would help sell more AppleTVs.

Nobody wants ALL of the apps available for AppleTV on their AppleTV. Don't want an app, don't install it. Others may very much want some apps you don't desire... and vice versa. That's the beauty of choice and app stores.

Several of the most popular apps for tvOS are not installed on my AppleTVs. I'm glad they exist for those who do want to use them... even if I do not.
