While I would definitely agree with you about OS X > Windows... I won't agree that the current iMacs are "very nice". They are severely underpowered compared to what is available right now, let alone at the price they're asking.

I use a PC at work for heavy CS6. It's an HP tower running W7 and it freezes, crashes etc. To be honest, my 2011 iMac running CS5 does not have any of those problems, and believe me, I'm working with large files. Also any CS App opens in half the time on my Mac. Just saying.

(Work PC is quad core i7 12Gb Ram) Mac specs below.

My luck, MacBook Pro charger died tonight. I'm not putting $80 into a dying 2008 machine so I'm stuck. The refurbished 21-inch is very, very tempting but I'll miss out on the updated CPUs, GPUs, USB 3, and new screen. I'm bummed. :(

I bought a rMBP and I'm very happy with it so far, and haven't used it off the charger yet (external keyboard and stand).

I will hold back my comments of the ridiculousness of buying a 1.5 year old desktop, or of trusting Apple to update it.

Lets see 80 and you can use your computer which isn't old or 1000 and you can buy a new computer that isn't that old..

You mind posting the CBA that you used for that decision

I don't want to put money into a computer that is dying and would only be used for a month or so, assuming new iMacs come out in October.

And I don't want to drop money now on year old specs. I'm not getting the best bang for my buck. Missing that by a month, sucks.

I may try and see if they'll replace it at the Genius Bar. I just don't know what the best option is right now.

Electronics do not fail slowly like mechanical things the work until they stop. Your HD may be failing but not the computer.

I wouldn't go that far... I'm still working fine on my 2008 iMac. There's nothing I can't do with it (Aperture, iMovie, Photoshop CS5). Yes, it's getting long in the tooth, but it has outlasted any PC I have previously owned. I'd never be able to work this efficiently on a 4-1/2 year old PC. Even working on my 2 year old Dell laptop is a major crappy experience, and it has better "specifications".

THIS is very true. Overpriced for what they are made of compared to what is out there now.

Obviously that is the personal user experience. I have used both PCs and Macs my entire life. I feel like they both can last a very long time if the right care is taken.

Sure, Windows might have to be reset more or even reinstalled a few times for it to run in top form, but I bet I can get just as long out of Windows machine that I can out of a Mac. Do I want to, is a different story altogether.

I have an 08 and do a lot of photo editing. Getting lots of page outs and it's time for an upgrade. I assumed there would be some kind of mid-summer refresh. I want some screen real estate and don't need portability. An iMac offers considerably better value for me than a MBP + external monitor. If they reduced prices sharply I'd probably buy one of the current models. But, in terms of hardware, they're pretty dated. They don't even have usb 3 ports which is something from which I'd benefit. All they really need to keep me in the fold is a nice spec upgrade -- larger SSD drives, a memory bump, more current processors, and usb 3. But I won't consider one of the current models at the current prices.
