there will always be some PC lovin', Chevette customizin', short sleeves with a tie wearin', clip on sunglasses sportin' folks who think a slide out keyboard and the ability to run spread sheets on a phone makes it an "iPhone killer".

For the rest of us, there's iPhone.

Haha you think that's all it does?

Let's have a look at some of the major gripes with the iPhone:

- No multitasking support. N900 does it very well.

- Short battery life. N900 not only has a higher capacity battery, but the batteries are removable, so you can carry a couple of spares with you!

- (for some people) lack of hardware keyboard. With N900 you have a choice; there is an onscreen software keyboard as well as a slideout tactile qwerty.

- Customisation. N900 supports desktop wallpapers and widgets. There are 4 desktops supported. 4 may not sound like a lot, but you should bear in mind N900's resolution is much larger than iPhone's. You can change the sounds for all of your notifications; calls, texts, etc.

- Freedom. I've underlined this because it's a big one. You can install whatever you like on N900. Nokia aren't going to tell you what you can and can't install. You can send ANY file to your friends via bluetooth. You can even dual boot by installing a separate OS on a Micro SD card. Which brings me to my next point...

- Storage. N900 comes with 32GB of built-in storage and can be expanded with a Micro SD card. At present this means you could potentially carry a 48GB device in your pocket, but the 32GB cards will be out soon enough so that will be expanded to 64GB.

- Camera. N900 has a 5MP camera with carl zeiss lens and dual LED flash for those low-light photos.

- Sound quality. N900 has stereo speakers, resulting in much better sound quality than just a single speaker.

- Maemo does not just have a few select developers. It's open source and hundreds if not thousands of people contribute to the project. This should result in more updates and faster bug fixes, as is usually the case with open source software.

Everyone knows Nokia makes amazing hardware, but it seems they're finally focusing on software now too. Seriously, look at the videos of this software on youtube and tell me it isn't impressive. It's not an excellent piece of hardware running a crappy OS like most of Nokia's devices.

For everyone saying it's too thick: it's smaller than a laptop isnt it? ;)

I am not calling this an "iPhone killer" - everyone has their preferences, but this is certainly very impressive and my initial thoughts were that this solves just about every issue people have with the iPhone.

Not sure where you're goin' with that one, but that really hurt....:p:eek:

Maemo is probably the most powerful and versatile mobile OS out there.

Eh, I was playing with the most recent internet tablet...a cool device, but a little rough around the edges(software wise) Nokia will likely up the game here, but so far, nothing is proven(for me)

That sounds to me like what people said about the G1 and android. Go figure.

it has a maemo repository with linux applications meaning they are free. linux has way more apps than the app store does btw.

We get it, you want to be different, but that doesn't change the fact that the iPhone is 10x better than anything else on the market.

Wait until the product gets released, then judge it. I've heard the term "iPhone Killer" every few months. Every SINGLE phone that tries to compete with the iPhone gets hammered to the ground....

Wow... Fanboy central here!!!

Let's get real now.

Hence "mobile OS"... The iPhone OS is based on OS X, so i'd say that's a whole lot more advanced.

The iPhone is so successful because of OS X and the SDK.... The only other platform that comes close is Android (that too is based on a desktop OS).

The only iPhone killer I see is a ZuneHD Phone (not announced, pure speculation) which if were to exist would be based on Nvidia Tegra.

Ummm... False. This device is based off of *nix too. Just like OSX is. Instead of being forced to buy a mac and use Xcode and the iPhone SDK you can download ANY IDE and develop for this device on any computer.

The only iPhone killer out right now is AT&T.

Hahahaha. Yes :D

You really think the Nokia will get better battery life. It's a UMID, it will get 3-4 hours tops!

I actually would like to see the iPhone a little thinner, so I disagree with your point about it being anorexic. You will see that this Nokia will fail, end of story.

3-4 hours is more than my iPhone 3G gets. Also, the iPhone is not big by any means and this phone is definitely in a size range where it would be competitive. Glad you're so confident.

Hardware keyboard = FAIL
Slider = FAIL

NEXT!

Interesting... Whenever I try to convince a non iPhone user to get an iPhone the ONLY thing they end up saying they can't deal with is the lack of hardware keyboard and say they wish it had a slide out one or something. I think having both definitely expands the consumer base.

And someone is going to re-engineer them for the Maemo platform?

The reason that the iPhone is doing well is that it is not running a desktop UI on a mobile device. It has a new UI designed especially for the touchscreen.

That success rests on a formula...

OS X - Unix core - which supports....
Cocoa - Object based software development which rests upon...
Standardised UI components built for the iPhone.. Which are rendered by
Hardware GPU.. which does all the heavy lifting.

Both Maemo and Android are missing significant chunks of this formula.
That does not kill them as platforms, but it does put them at a disadvantage compared to Apple.

C.

Someone re-engineered apps for the iPhone platform. All OSX apps don't work on the iPhone OS...

Most OS have similar architechtures as you just described. So please explain what parts of this Maemo and Android are missing. Yes, of course not Cocoa and OSX. All three OS mentioned are unix based. :p

My favourite N900 screenshot so far. :D Admittedly requires some *NIX geekiness to get the humour.

Oh yes! I like! Haha. I read somewhere that you can even install other OS on the device. Dunno how realistic that is.

10x Better based on the universal standard for... I like my iPhone, but I can't say it's 10x better...

The simple fact is, no phone will beat the iPhone. It's like the iPod, many companies have tried, even Sony who used to own the portable media player market with the Walkman cannot beat the iPod.

Give it a few years, it will be the same with the iPhone. Nokia will not beat Apple, they will be just like the Walkman: still there, still doing OK, but nothing compared to Apple's product.

I'm not being a fanboy, I'm just telling it like it is.

EDIT: Plus, any product being touted as a "iPhone killer" is just giving Apple free advertising.

double QFT. Can any of you HONESTLY picture loads of people getting rid of their iphone for a new nokia? Half the people who have iphones dont care about all that stuff, they just care about the IPHONE. Its a trendy thing made by apple. Its not going to be beaten.

I sold my iPhone 3G for a Nokia 5800 because on paper it has more features but ya know what? It's a pile of crap. I just sold it to buy a 3GS (which I'm getting tomorrow).

It's not just about fashion, the iPhone is just much better.

Haha same here. The 5800 is awful in comparison! Damn good at playing music and high quality calls though, I must admit.

For playing music I don't notice any difference between the Nokia and my old 3G, but that's not a bad thing, I considered the audio on that to be excellent.

Wow you must have bad hearing.

The Nokia has surround sound stereo speakers and a dedicated audio chip. Plus the volume goes much louder.

I notice it goes louder but that's all.

The main areas the Nokia lacks in, though, are internet and e-mail, and they are the main things I use. The built in browser has all sorts of problems, as does Opera Mini (though OM is fast).

Agreed; opera mini is faster than safari ever was for me on my old 2G, but the smaller screen makes the page difficult to navigate and the resistive touchscreen is a lot more awkward to use.

Even with GPRS it's fast, but it messes up the alignment of pages too which also annoys a lot, plus it changes the sizes of images etc.

OMG! I hate it when people say the next phone is the iphone killer. I would just like to say, the iphone has been etched into history! NOTHING can compare to it, except of course for the iphone 3g (which beat the iphone) and now the iphone 3gs (which beat the 3g). You can only add to the magnificence of what the iphone is. But every 'iphone killer' is based off the iphone. Iphone is the only iphone killer. You can say other phones have a better OS, better apps, better etc, but that is personal opinion. I'm biased because I love apple. I think nothing will ever beat the iphone because everything is just based off the iphone. But please, quit saying iphone killer. In the past three years, samsung, nokia, htc, blackberry, motorola, palm, and many others have all TRIED to kill the iphone - do you see where that got them? 2nd place (I'm counting all iphones as first place).

You can say how customizable these other phones are, how they have multitasking capabilities, better battery life - it's just not true. Battery life lies solely on how you use your phone, my 3g (that i've had for a year) can run straight for a week (yes, when I did minimal usage; I only texted). But It will run two days if I use internet, check mail, make calls, etc. I wouldn't care if it only lasted a day, I charge it every night any way.

Cuztomizability, guess what, JAILBREAK IT! You can have wallpapers, multitasking and more.

Am I saying this phone, along with all the other iphone killers, is a bad phone? No! I'm just saying it wont beat the iphone. Just like apples iphone 3g debut commercial - "The only phone to beat the iphone....The new iphone." Personally, having used the g1, blackberry and htc tmobile MYTOUCH3g, (I mean used, not gone to the store and played with), the iphone is the best. mytouch was second, and i didn't like the g1 or blackberry (the unlocked blackberry-yes, they have one, don't get it, it sucks).

Anway, I just wanted to put my two cents worth in.

It's really funny reading people downplaying Maemo (or any other) even thought they don't seem to know a single thing about it... If you like Apples, it's fine, but then just say that you don't care anything else. All this "my phone is 10 times better, iPhone is always better, etc" crap is just too funny. I know this post won't change the ways of hardened fanboys, but anyways it's fun to read these kind of posts. :)
