I mean hey, to each their own, but looking at the User Guide for the Shelly 1, I can imagine some people's heads exploding with the initial setup. Can those be used away from your home center?

There's (un-official) Homekit support.
It's not that hard.
Problem with (all brands) these switches/dimmers is that they need to be integrated into existing wiring, that is the hard part, setting up is easy.
My partner is helping her parents rethink the terrible home automation system someone installed for them years ago and then quickly went obsolete so I will certainly pass this company along to them. Unsure the amount of work it would take to retrofit but I can imagine if they are going to rip out an older system, they'd have access to switches, dimmers, and the like to install something like this at the same time.

EDIT:

This came in while I was responding. I think their challenge is that none of the existing things are that recent. I believe the system they intend to replace was adding the smart capability to dumb appliances/systems.

I'm just too remote for airtags to work with my dogs. The only options for pet tracking that are viable in remote areas are $500+... I have acreage and my dogs are always running off.

I’m still waiting for a fairly priced dog collar with an AirTag slot. Rather not have this dangly thing that would be constantly knocking against stuff, like her bowl when she’s eating or drinking. There’s this one but it’s €135 😳

....if one is using the airtag to find their pet, that's presumably because they're lost. so how does one "make sure" their pet gets in range of another find my device?

Unlike Belkin, Nomad's products fully protect AirTags with nothing exposed. Whether that is worth more than double the price is entirely up to you.
LoL at the price of this case, if my naked airtag suffers a fatal scratch I’ll just buy a new airtag with the money I save by not buying this thing.

Yep, this is something I am after for my pets. The dangling concept is not a good one IMO.
Yeah, my dogs wrestle each other and have torn off each others' regular tags. I want a collar with an AirTag pocket, too. I've seen two brands-- the one that was posted here (pretty but so expensive) and another that was less expensive (still like 50 bucks) but very boring in color choice.

Nomad thinks they're high end. They're not.
And they have hideous customer service. I've told this story before, but why not again. Long story short: Bought something on promotion, it was discounted even further the next day, my order hadn't shipped yet, I asked for a price adjustment, they said I'd have to let the current order ship, then send it back and try to repurchase hoping the current sale price was still in effect (a ridiculous suggestion). I'll never purchase from them again.

Man, a lot of people are really doubling down on thinking this will actually find your lost pet. Having watched some youtubers try and track something down, I have zero confidence it will help you find a moving target before said target has long moved on to someplace else. It’s no wonder Apple tells you not to put one on your dog.

This is ridiculous!!!

Dogs can easily inadvertently open the rugged case and then open the AirTag battery hatch and then eat the battery and die! Oh the humanity caninity!

Apple must be shamed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Common Sense Alert? 😆 Obviously the tag doesn't know what you are tracking & Apple don't want to be held liable for any missing children, adults or pets.
I agree, but it only works if the pet is around someone within the Find My range, it doesn't work like a gps-tracker. So you can't really track your pet, right?

Somewhat related, our dog trainer recently suggested that we put "Needs Meds" on our puppy's dog tag instead of his name. She claimed that that improves chances that someone will actually call the number since no one wants to steal a dog that has medical issues (whether he does or not).
That’s a good idea. Better still, this idea requires no AirTag and older, just add a cheap tag to the collar with this message and phone number. Or even better, keep him/her on the lead also.

For years i've often wondered how many steps our dog gets through in a day so last Christmas my wife bought me as a present a sort of dog fitbit type thing that attached to his collar. It was the shape of a bone and dangled from his collar a bit like this. Put it on the dog around 2pm in the afternoon whilst he was laid down, by 2:15pm without it registering a step as he hadnt moved he had chewed it to the point it was dead! By 2:20pm it was in the bin! Suspect if i was to attach this to him a similar situation would play out.

Get the dog an Apple Watch too.

If you live in a highly populated area this would be way cheaper than a GPS collar where you have to pay a sub fee.
you cant compare this. GPS via GSM is real time tracking, no matter where you are or if anyone with a phone in nearby. i wouldnt track moving things via AirTags, if you really wanna find them. cars, pets, etc
