I am not running a server, or doing intensive "mission-critical" work. Can I use the standard desktop ram? I can get it for $60 cheaper.

My understanding is that the Mac Pro can run it, but to not mix the two kinds.

I did some research into this. I figure if the RAM is cheaper, it works, ECC is not needed, and non-ECC RAM actually runs a little faster.... well then why the hell not?

The problem is, I've read here and elsewhere that RAM without the temperature sensor causes the MP to run one or more fans at full speed on the assumption that the RAM is hot.

I don't want loud fans, so I set about looking for non-ECC ram with the temperature sensor. Mainly I found that this sort of information is not typically listed, making it hard to shop with any sort of confidence. I did find some gaming/overclocker/enthusiast non-ECC ram with temperature sensor, but it was FAR more expensive than even ECC ram.

In the end I gave up and got ECC ram. I don't want my case fans running at full speed, and I couldn't confidently find non-ECC ram that was inexpensive and definitely had the temp sensor.

I was looking to fill the first three channels with 12gb (for now).

    That's not a bad price! :)

But I do still beat it by a significant amount for 12GB. So I'd probably pay the little extra for the DMS chips w/ heatsinks I was looking at, rather than Super Talent memory.

The non-ECC on the other hand, are 12GB Mushkins for under $140. Its tempting, but I'll skip them if its recommended I stick with ECC.

    Thanks for the input. :)

So did you personally experience these loud fans on your machine?

With all the solar flare activity in the news these days, I can't imagine not having ECC memory. :p :D

just get non-ECC. Crucial 4GB 1333 is less than $50 each, and it works.

If you get the superbiiz memory mentioned above, there is a coupon code "HOMERUN20" good for $20 off $200+ (Server Memory only). Expires 2/28/2011.

4 sticks of 4GB puts you over $200. With code, that would bring it down to $51 a stick for ECC. That's virtually the same price as non-ECC ram.

The code worked, thanks for the heads-up. :D

$210 shipped for 16gb ecc! I don't think I'll get a better deal than that.
