People see them wearing one-of-a-kind Apple watches, and will lust for it which makes them think buying an apple watch puts them closer to their looking like their idol. (Okay, pretty far fetched conclusions -i admit).

I don't think that's far fetched; I think it's accurate.

Besides that, people look at images of celebrities. We tend to mentally filter out overt advertisements these days, but a large portion of the population spends considerable time actively looking at images of celebrities in magazines and social media sites.

Product awareness is the first step to a purchase. You can't want what you aren't aware of.

Yup, these celebrity endorsements are a mistake. What happened to "think different"??

I won't be getting my Apple Watch on Friday, oh but Bieber got his a few weeks ago, so that's nice.

I actually have to agree with celebrities getting their wrists in one for free, before everyone else and in variations not available to "regular" consumers (so far).

I can understand the marketing behind such a move but at the same time giving a celebrity a gold link bracelet version for free (even though they could afford it) to just put it on their wrist and publicize it for them is a bit... much.

Unless they believe that putting an Apple Watch on Beyonce in gold is going to make younger girls and boys suddenly want one (which I counter with; they can't afford it), I don't see the point of it. Most news station has covered the Apple Watch in depth WITHOUT the literal prostitution of Apple Watch marketing.

I am one of the biggest Apple fan boys ever but this just screams pathetic, desperate and belittling to "commoners" in my opinion. I'm still getting one, but I was getting one from before. My partner, whom has no interest in anything Apple, and follows celebrity gossip/news like it's his job does not suddenly want an Apple Watch. He wants one after I dragged him into the Apple Store for a try-on appointment, not because some celebrity is advertising it.

At the end of the day though, who really gives a flying fart?

I agree with you a 100%. Apple maybe giving it to celebrities to wear and such....but who has noticed it besides people that follow apple watch like the members of this community? They are just taunting / belittling the people that were going to buy it anyway! I hope their celebrity campaign works, but from the looks of it, no one has picked up those stories.

----------

Apple's being clever here. The celebs are giving the software one final test before general availability.

Who better to ensure it's idiot-proof? :D

Apparently they need to change the band replacement design since some idiots aren't able to get it right still....

It seems kinda pointless to me. Their fans won't be able to get one on launch since they didn't preorder. And the average person isn't going to drop $350+ on an iPhone assessory.

I don't know anyone who actually wants one. Anecdotal, sure, but it doesn't seem popular with the public.

IMHO, Apple has an uphill battle. This isn't a phone, MP3 player, or tablet.

Actually it can store 2GB of music and monitor your Heart Rate and Activity.

I shake my head at threads like these... I'm going to reword your comment to reflect what it really says.

I'm not a fan of Apple's marketing strategy and I want mine now.

Break it down into the two parts: Not a fan of Apple's marketing. Seems to be working for them pretty well, wouldn't you say? Each celebrity sighting gets every tech site to post the picture and get the crowds whipped into a frenzy. They got them literally a few days before launch. The excitement of a celebrity wearing something the common folks can get will die on Friday.

And you want yours now.... don't we all? C'est la vie. It'll be on your wrist as soon as possible, given your order time, model popularity and supply. Enjoy it when you get it.

I'm not talking about wanting a :apple:a Watch now. You've misinterpreted my words and intent. That's why I stated to not read into it too much. Of all the duplicate threads, I thought I post what was on my mind. I cancelled my preorder and I'm totally fine with waiting to see if they'll be available in Apple stores. I may just settle and get a SG sport but that's not what I'm talking about. I enjoyed the strategy that was used when celebrities had to wait like everyone else. I do understand why that's not the case.

Apple is thinking differently than all the other makers of Smart watches before it.

Lol, I know that! Just saying that isn't why people would buy it :p
Except you listed reasons why I would buy it. To me being an mp3 player is a HUGE plus as Id rather control my music from the watch.

You know there are tons of people that will buy an apple watch just because Beyonce has one. You guys may not be the people and the celebrities having them and showing them isn't for you, it is for other people.

I'm 28 so my friends and I'm sure those out get hold a stigma against smart watches..."Oh that's so geeky/nerdy". "That's not cool". Oh like that Casio calculator watch...and on and on.

I personally think it's a smart decision by apple to try to widen appeal and add a cool factor to category that's not...it's a category that's not a phone or a computer...not something that's necessary. So why not try to broaden appeal to fashion and the youngsters

Pretty sure Jimmy Iovine has his hands on that just like he did with Beats and put them on celebs and athletes and made expensive headphones a category

You're right. :roll eyes:

Just gotta understand nobody reading this forum is the target audience for that move. I couldn't care less what a celebrity is wearing, wrist or otherwise. To some people out there, far away from the MR forums- it matters to them a WHOLE lot more. Think about co-workers who request time off when the royals get married, yeah, I don't get THAT either...

Being a celebrity is all about style, sophistication and looking cool in public
Wearing an Apple watch is about looking nerdy and I can't imagine a single A class celebrity wearing an Apple watch in public if they weren't getting paid lots of money for wearing it!

You'll have to rethink this...

I'm fine with them getting it early, but getting custom bands does annoy me... Why can't I get a red sport band? :(

A plus, but not you're sole reason for buying one.

Im buying it because it looks good tbqh and to better interact with my other Apple products. It tells time yes. But if all it did was tell time I wouldnt buy one.

Beyonce and Katy Perry are wearing Apple Watches. They are as A class as you can get celebrity wise.

I dislike seeing these endorsements for a different reason; Apple is feeling less and less like a tech company and more like any other "popular brand" selling "fashionable" trinkets.

Especially growing up as a nerdy kid I was rejected by the "popular crowd". One of my escapes was playing with computers, particularly Apple ones.

Now as an adult I see the company selling out to the same sort of "popular crowd" that rejected me growing up. It hurts a bit.

Maybe I'm too sentimental. But I despise the whole celebrity culture and obsession. There's very few celebrities who truly deserve their fame.

This is exactly what I was getting at. I applaud you for explaining it in a way that strikes at the heart of my topic.

So were the U2 and Madonna branded iPods a mistake? Apple's been using celebrity endorsements since forever.
