I understand that the :apple:Watch is being positioned as a fashion item and want to expand the customer base. I'm just not a fan of seeing all the celebrities with it before release. I liked it when even they had to wait as well. It's not a rant damning the company just something I wanted to share on this forum. Don't read too much into it.

Haha yea i totally agree with you. It all reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman inherits $1 million dollars and decides to buy his own theme park. He then advertises "I have the coolest park and you can't come"

It's annoying. The whole thing.

The only thing that matters is that it works.

Even if it doesn't mean a spike in sales because these celebs are wearing them, The people that follow these celebs (Which is pretty much at least 1 person in all categories) have been made instantly aware that the watch exist. That's more that can be said about ANY other smartwatch out right now.

I dislike seeing these endorsements for a different reason; Apple is feeling less and less like a tech company and more like any other "popular brand" selling "fashionable" trinkets.

Especially growing up as a nerdy kid I was rejected by the "popular crowd". One of my escapes was playing with computers, particularly Apple ones.

Now as an adult I see the company selling out to the same sort of "popular crowd" that rejected me growing up. It hurts a bit.

Maybe I'm too sentimental. But I despise the whole celebrity culture and obsession. There's very few celebrities who truly deserve their fame.

Then there are those who despise the whole tech culture and obsession. What happened to just living life with family and friends and enjoying people VS things?

My only "problem" is how blatant it is. It makes Apple look needlessly desperate when they really don't have to, given how well the watch is selling already.

People on these very forums and elsewhere crowed about Oprah shilling for the Microsoft Surface and then later tweeting from an iPad, or Alicia Keys shilling for BlackBerry, or Jessica Alba shilling for Windows Phone. People mocked these companies, but now Apple is basically doing the same thing.

Previously when you saw a celebrity with an Apple product you could assume that it was their choice and not a marketing stunt. Now it's painfully obvious that these celebrities are paid shills and not actual users - Karl Lagerfeld's watch is still on the initial pairing screen, for Christ's sake - which leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

If Apple thinks these marketing efforts will sell more watches, more power to them, but it certainly isn't doing anything positive for me.

you are awesome!
exactly what i was thinking. To your point, it does seem desperate…like the hot girl at the bar that needs to be hit on constantly for self-reassuarance.

Tim Cook seems like an alright guy, but if all of this was his decision then it reflects poorly on him. This is the FIRST big product launch after Steve's passing and under Tim's reign. This show a lack of confident in the product. What happen to Apple's mentality of ******* it! if you don't like it don't buy it? Where's that bravado? This is the one thing i doubt Steve would have done.

I feel like angela ahrendts has a role in this as well, the whole "high-end fashion" approach. The iPhone was already seen as a high-end fashion accessories way before she came on board. It did it without needing to plead to all the A-list people.

The biggest stigmata about Apple's user is the "sheeple" mentality, this will just entrench that even more so! Way to push us back a couple years Apple. Shouldn't they follow the design mentality of letting a great design speaks for itself? not a bunch of A-list celeb does the speaking?

I'm a huge fan of them pimping out watches like that.

The more celebrities that wear it, the more I get to feel like one when I finally put mine on =)

You can thank Beats being picked up by Apple for that. All of this is because of brand Beats.

i feel like the "house of Apple" has been infiltrated and slowly loosing itself, Beats and angela ahrendts. What happen to the jeans and new balance wearing steve ideology?

they are human just like you and i, don't forget that. I'm sure you are just as great at something as they are with what they do.

All I want in life is for Kanye to interrupt someone and tell them I'm better at something they're being awarded for is that too much to ask? :(

So were the U2 and Madonna branded iPods a mistake? Apple's been using celebrity endorsements since forever.

that's a far cry from what is going on now. What's next signing on Ashton Kutcher as VP of blah blah blah for some street cred? oh wait they got DRE on board for that.

You're right. :roll eyes:

wait wait…wait… you think the individuals shown in here is even remotely comparable to the people they are shilling to now?!

you do know who they are right?

If Makita started showing pictures of celebrities doing renovations with their power tools it wouldn't hold any sway over my purchase decisions. If Kanye was given a special gold plated drill I'd think it was a bit silly. I might even think I don't want to pay a premium to help cover that type of marketing.

In this case I'm only interested in the technology. If anything, the ad approach gets in the way. However, I'm sure many more will be drawn in than pushed away.

Thread title really says "Not a fan of anyone receiving their Apple watch before me".

Im totally fine with it.
Allow them to wear them helping spread aware of the Apple Watch, helping it sales, that'll lead to a faster boom in the wearable tech advancement, that'll fuel android rip offs, that help improve the :apple: / wearables even more & quicker :D

I'll give you Gahndi and maybe Goodall, but Jim Henson and Muhammad Ali are somehow "better" than the celebrities who are receiving the Apple Watch ahead of launch? That's pretty subjective.
