And my iMac has 16gb of RAM and usually has 4gb or so free. My ipad has a measily 512mb of RAM and usually has about 40-80mb free. My ipad is the only onehaving issues. Do you see a trend here?

By the way, it is better to have available free ram for apps, especially for multitasking.

I'm more curious why you believe having RAM available is an issue?

Lack of RAM on the ipad2 is a known issue. You simply can not keep apps open and running, regardless if you are jailbroken or not. And fyi, jailbreaking does not alter the iPads core system of monitoring and optimizing ram.

I've never had memory issues on my iPhones or iPads, ranging from an iPhone 3Gs to an iPad3 (with an iPhone 4 and an iPad2 there as well). Not sure what you're doing that would swamp them like that. I never bother to manually shut down an app or restart my phone. The only time I've done that on purpose is when my Visual Voice-mail gets confused. So honestly, I have no idea how much memory is being used on my devices, or how many apps I have open and running... I just use them.

I realize this doesn't change the fact that you're having issues... But I don't know that I'd start with blaming the 512MB of RAM. It's not like someone can install another 512MB to test if that makes them work any better...

According to the "Hardware Master Free" application, out of 505MB on my machine, 500 is in use, and I've got 5.1MB free. As far as I know, my iPhone is in a "normal for me" state. And I don't get crashes or experience glitches at all, much less ones I'd blame on lack of memory. This is on a stock iPhone 4.

....was over what I thought was an automated processes. Since that's not the case it all makes sense again.

Personally, I don't think there's any reason for you to do that, but I'm not one to tell others what to do. I'm just saying I wouldn't.....

I just wanted to say that I absolutely love you right now.

I only have about 450MB of free RAM on my Macbook Pro and it's running super fluid with 0 complications right now (out of 4GB).

I would check my iPhone to also offer support right now but it's not jailbroken, so I don't know how to check.

What's wrong with having extra ram available for you to use. It's like saying why have money in your savings account if you're not using it.

Bad analogy. You're saving for the future. Phones should be giving it their all at every moment.

It shouldn't hold back in anticipation that you 'might' decide to start opening every single app at once.

Android's Settings app reports RAM usage differently from Apple products. There's "Running" RAM, which is the blue bar. This is active and wired RAM, which is dynamically being randomly accessed by programs and the OS. Then, there's the "Cached" RAM, which is the inactive ram in OS X.

Android reports them differently, but since iOS, Mac OS X, and Android are all Linux derived systems, they manage RAM similarly. We can see that adding up all of the cached and active RAM results in 694MB of used RAM. This phone has 1GB of RAM, but a lot of that (about 200MB, I suspect) is used for video RAM and other hardware uses. Once a program has been closed and exited in OS X, iOS, and Android, you can see an appreciable difference in the speed with which it launches. That is because the process is stored in the inactive RAM, which allows it to be launched faster.

When the system runs out of CACHED RAM, it will clear old processes. Unfortunately, when someone is running 100^232 programs, they are forcing ACTIVE RAM to be used, which the OS does not automatically clear out. That would be like working on something and suddenly having all of your unsaved data being wiped.

There is a difference between the types of RAM and how the different types are managed, but since OS X, iOS, and Android are all Linux systems, they will manage it in a similar fashion.
