The iPod touch in Japan is not near as popular as say a place like the US where there are plenty of open WiFi spots to use. Japan is more smart phone oriented if you will. So this might be affecting the deployment as well.

this.

rarely see them used in japan. most places try to bundle them with mifi for connectivity, but you need to pay up the arse with a 2 year contract.

wifi is limited to maconalds and larger stations (for the most part) and it ain't free.

maybe on sheer population they outsell australia, but per capita australia would easily outdo japan.

good on you steve for rewarding the loyal customers. :)

I don't know why, but I see hell a lot of iPods and iPhones being used around here.
And plus, what's up with your 'rewarding loyal customers'?
You know that Japan always had the priority in terms of products, right?
btw, I just read the news. It says that the Facetime has to go through the law and so forth. It will be complicated if I explained this, but long story short, there weren't any connection between Phones and MP3 devices. Japan is so sensitive in terms of these stuff. HATE IT.

ummm, ok, looks like some people don't get my situation.
I have a Macbook Pro, but it's in repair. I'm typing this on my friends computer after school.
I have an iPod Touch 1G, which only has 3 hours of battery life (it really does, trust me.) which I had it for three years. I don't have anything else beside my iPod Touch at home. All of you guys telling me to chilax a little bit should know this.
Plus, I gotta wait two more week to get my MBP repaired. If the iPod Touch came out earlier, I wouldn't be seriously pissed off. Try using my iPod for more than three hours. It won't last any longer.

Try putting yourself in someone else's shoes who can't even afford an iPod. There are a lot of people who would love to have your problem. You own a Macbook Pro and an iPod. You're seriously overreacting over a toy that nobody truly needs and you already have an iPod, as I mentioned already, be thankful you even have one, some people can't even afford one. 3 hours battery? LOL. Come back and complain when it doesn't work at all. Just wait and stop trippin.

who cares about the reasoning, but the result is fair imo and good on steve for that result. australia rocks.

i get lousy service from apple shop in ginza (and japan generally)... so dumb about their products. :/

the phones i usually see ppl using are those fold up things... don't really know what they are but they easily outnumber anything i see from apple.

japan is 3G, not wifi

be more patient. i just sold my 3g so i have nothing right now myself.

Those flip phones are "keitais"-- "portables" in english. ;)
If it is such a big deal, why don't you just order it online??

wait - I thought the point of the thread was that Japan wasn't getting any ever

but you're this upset because you have to wait a week

you gotta be kidding me, seriously, what is wrong with you

You'll just never understand, some people (me included) want their new shiny Apple iProducts NOW!!!, not week later.

Coming and ranting if you will to a forum isn't exactly the best thing to do but I see where he's coming from. I haven't had an iPod touch for 2 weeks now, sold my 3G and waited for Apple to finally ship out my order and then for FedEx to hurry up and get it over here. I became very very impatient a lot but I finally sucked it up and just tried to be patient, my iPod will arrive Wednesday

@HLdan
seriously man, hey, think logically please.
I know you are macrumors 601 and all that, but if I was such a "rich-ass", then I wouldn't even bother posting here.
I really don't know how rich you are, or how logical you are, but hey, think. If I was rich, then I would have bought every generation of iPod Touch. I ear my own money (I'm a high school student), and guess what? I worked for 6 years just to get my first Macbook and iPod Touch. Another two years (work and tutor at school) to get my Macbook Pro. I don't go to any rich school at all.
Please, you should know it more than I do. If my iPod Touch lasts longer, I wouldn't bother using it, if it was at least 2nd generation.
Not trying to be offensive, but really? I worked so hard to get my products. NOW you are telling me stop complaining because I have a computer and an iPod? Jeez. Spent 8 years total to get the money.

You are defending him for going ballistic over being impatient? I went a week without an ipod this month while I waited for the new ones came out and did not bitch when I could only afford a shuffle for now.

Did it suck? Yes
Could I put it in perspective and realize I have real stuff to worry over? Yup

I'm sure in these situations people can find other things to do, some of these may include

Reading a book (yes they still exist)
Watching a movie
Getting some exercise or going for a walk
Find a new hobby or do something you enjoy doing (that does not involve a computer or ipod)
hang out or stay at a friends place
volunteer somewhere
talk to a girl
sleep
eat a pie :)

I dont give a crap if Steve Jobs is pissed at not being able to bring that shuriken.
Hey, if all he wants is money, he would still sell them in Japan.

But who cares now. Online store says 5~7 business days, but not in stores. How funny.

So how come you aren't buying it online?

Just chillout, and stop bleating on as if it's your devine right to own an iPod. I have to wait until December to get mine, I can't afford it until then. I'm 15, stuck with my iPod 1g until then, and I don't even have a macbook, I'm not moaning.

Anyway, what would you like us to do, it's not as if we could make Steve Jobs magically appear from the sky dropping iPod touches as you wave money at him. (Although if someone could, please send him to England).

Brradley.
Just called Apple today.
They said (or rather he), it's gonna come out as late as March.
Hear that?
Hey, plus, I don't expect Steve Jobs to magically appear. Why say that?

Japan Apple shipping iPod touch at end of September

I live in Osaka, Japan and ordered iPod touch 4th gen 32GB the day after it was announced. Mine says its shipping on 28th September. two weeks to go....

two weeks to go?
********......
I'm going to America tomorrow anyways. CA, Cupertino.

Apple Japan website says ipod touches ship within 5-7 business days.

I, too, think iPod touches and iphones are not as popular in Japan. If I lived in Japan, I would not get a Touch. I will use a cellphone compatible with Suica system. Mobile suica is really convenient. Japanese keitai has so many great features. Docomo has so many great inexpensive services.

I use an iPod Touch since I am in the US. Love it.

I hate AT&T... So many bad connections. So no iPhone for me....

Mine status put 14 to 16 sept...and today is 16 sept and the status still reflect not yet ship....:(

With the Touch I might agree; see many people with Nano's in the trains. But on the other side I see many iPhones out here. If Apple would integrate the payment system you mentioned I think the iPhone would rule Japan (ok; also would be nice to not being linked to only one provider; hoping for a CDMA-compatible iPhone). Problem with the current (only) provider is: weak (or even no) signal in countryside. Here are others just better.
SUICA is one of those examples where Japan is just damn convenient.

Not to be a dusche or anything but I would just like to say that I have had my iPod since launch day and I LOVE it! Lol just had to throw that out there.

If you want it so badly just order it online. It may take a week or two but that's better than waiting until March.

Politics

The availability (or lack thereof) of the new ipod touch in Japan has nothing to do with geography and everything to do with politics. Japan has been dumping on Apple claiming that its ipods burst into flames and such. These importation barriers are typical protectionist tactics employed by Japan since the dawn of time. In this way, Japanese business is protected from any real competition and artificially high prices are maintained in the domestic market. Japan is famous for having blocked the importation of skis from Europe on the basis that Japanese snow is different from Swiss snow.
