Not much excitement

Given Apple's "routine" of annual updates, do you think this is a surprise? We all (sort of) knew this was coming, just like we know a new iPhone is coming, or an M6 MBA is coming, or a new Watch is coming.

Given the state of Apple today, we all know that - at some point in time - existing hardware will get a new processor, right? Where is the excitement in that? Apple has created this problem themselves. Little innovation, just this annual grind of "upgrades".

We had proper excitement and topics dozens of pages long when Neo was released. Why? Because Neo was actually something new, compared to an update with an extra core and an extra nit of brightness.

All of which has never stopped the enthusiasm of previous product launches.

In your opinion, maybe.

IMO Neo was the best thing since the 12" rMB was released over 10 years ago.

Having had 2 12" rMB for 10 years and taking them on trips only - they were fantastic, thin, lightweight Macbooks - albeit with short battery life, heating up, expensive to tote & worry plus crappy Intel designed hardware....

Now I have 2 Neos for travel - wife and I love them - super long battery life, excellent single core performance (beats out my M2 MBA), and stays ultra cool.

Can't speak for everyone but for myself it's 100% the pricing.

I was actually strongly considering getting a Studio this fall but a spec that would match or improve on my current MacBook Pro is an amount of money that I would not want to pay for a computer of that spec.

And I'm both an enthusiast and use these things professionally, so it would be a business write off for me.

But at these prices it's just a non-starter. If I didn't already have a decent machine it would be a different story. As it is, I'll wait and see how the next few years shake out.

it's just a chip bump and they're all absurdly expensive now... 🤷‍♂️

Sure, the Neo is a useful little device, but I still don't see what's innovative about it.

I suppose it all depends on how much computer power you need for your business. I write software so I have an IDE open and a browser with 10 tabs or so. I bought an Intel MBP 15" 32gb/1gb in 2019 for +€4000 and updated last year to a MacBook Air M4 32gb/1gb for less than half that amount. So: thanks Apple silicon and happy days.

What kind of work do you do exactly that requires such an expensive machine?

Nothing too crazy, I do web development and native Mac/iOS development.

I have a 48 GB / 2 TB M4 Pro 14" MacBook Pro. I could certainly get away with less, and have in the past.

I was thinking of switching to a desktop as I no longer travel so my computer is docked almost all the time, which feels a bit wasteful. But either the mini or the Studio with 48 GB memory and 2 TB storage would cost more than I paid for my MacBook Pro two years ago. +$500 CAD in the case of the mini and +$1300 CAD in the case of the Studio.

My situation is similar. I need to replace the Intel iMac in my home office. With last year's prices, I would have bought M5 Ultra / 256 GB / 4 TB. I develop bioinformatics software, and 256 GB RAM would have been enough to run production-scale tests locally. But that convenience isn't worth $10k. I considered getting an M5 Max instead, but 128 GB is not a substantial improvement over my MacBook Pro. So I ended up choosing a Mac Mini with M6 / 32 GB / 1 TB. Which is good enough for everything except production-scale tests.

Now I'm going to be in a weird spot, where my laptop is much more powerful than my desktop.

2 years ago things were very different. Spec an equivalent MBP you bought 2 years ago and see how much it’s gone up.

Misty I just bought my first Studio Display (2026) this year and I LOVE it! For what that's worth. If you can afford it that is 🙂
