i want to fullscreen firefox like i would on XP, is there any way for me to do it. like...cover everything? it was F11 in XP..

You must be a Windows guy... Always used to using maximized windows and what not. Macs are different, each app is designed to use as little screen space as possible. Once you get used to it, it's much easier to work with. Multi-tasking on a Mac is 10X better than on a Windows machine.

Oh

so i guess if I am a windows guy and use to full screens vs multi tasking small windows than a mac isnt for me? also I guess if all i do is surf the web and type a few papers here and there watch a ton of youtube and other free movies than a mac isnt for me? once again i appreciate everyone who actually answered my questions with positive replys but to those telling me a mac isnt for me because of the differences between the mac and windows based systems.

Is this not possible? Surely there is a setting?

Easy enough on Linux and Solaris. I know it's not the same dock app, but the function is hardly rocket science. *shrug*

Well, like I'm sure others have said, just use the activity monitor and for the full screen windows, just drag out the window from the bottom right corner. Next time you open your browser, I believe it remembers the size you had it set to last and puts it back where you had it. I used to dislike the fact that windows didn't open full screen when I switched to mac, but now I actually prefer them not to fill the whole screen and I get frustrated when using a pc and one window just monopolizes the whole screen. You'll get used to it I'm sure.

Update on using a Macbook

So far I am glad that I actually got to use a macbook, this is probaly the sexiest laptop ive ever used and it feels good and sturdy. However after thinking and continuing to use it I find that most ppl that own them actually still use windows based products. Be it excel, word, etc... on there macs.

I think I was living in a fantasy world assuming that once I switched to a mac the world of windows would be left behind but so far im seeing most mac users "dual boot" with boot camp running both the new Windows 7 beta and the mac os and im the type of guy that prefers one over the other not both.

Allow me to explain, I had to decide between owning a PS3 or XBOX 360 and I selected the system that I felt as if gave me the most for my money I didnt want to own two systems which basically release almost the same games so i went with a Xbox 360. I can understand why ppl buy macs they are awesome, however Ive decided that I probaly wont take the plunge and will probaly just pick up a HP laptop and use vista and wait til Windows 7 is released. I have a few more days with the mac and altough sexy I just cant justify spending more money for say a product when i can get twice as much for $300 dollars less. Just my opinion and thanks for all positive replys regarding my use with the mac.

Should've went PS3. Talk about value, PS3 is where it's at out the box. haha

thats ok, the less people have macs the better, or theyre going to start writing viruses for mac if its too mainstream.

Hmm, up until now I honestly thought your post was genuine but your last paragraph wreaks of a troll. Interesting you say your friend lent you his Macbook for a few days? He didn't NEED his computer? Also did you question him for paying so much? Did you ask him about the full screen maximizing or the copy and paste? Your friend should know right? But you came here to ask us? Troll much on Mac forums? :p

Says the person with a avator bashing windows...

If you must know, actually I am in the us air force stationed at elmendorf afb. my friend doesnt have internet but she just purchased a brand new white macbook. During a conversation I mentioned to her I was interested in getting a mac to which she replied "well i have one if you want to check it out i dont even have internet so i cant do to much you can borrow it for a week" so i replied "awesome sounds good" I am not saying that for ppl that actually use the macs to the full potential that they are a waste of money. I said for myself a person that just surf the net, watch youtube, movies online and the occasional paper needed to be typed for school it would be a waste of money for me.

If you know me which you dont than you would know ive spent the better month talking about how much i wanted to try out a mac and how i couldnt wait to purchase one. But after actually using it watching movies online to me its not worth it. Did my friend waste her money? no she didnt because obviously she thought a mac was the best value for the money however for me and my budget the mac i would want cost $1,599 and i couldnt justify spending that when i could spend half and get a really nice HP. Not that macs arent awesome because they are for ppl that can afford them without going broke.

So ive been thinking about getting a macbook for some time now. But recently after actually borrowing my friends for a week im not impressed. Now i know alot of ppl will probaly flame me before actually understanding what I am getting at so let me explain. This could be user error meaning i dont know how to use a mac but why doesnt the internet open to the entire screen? it opens with the apps at the bottom and doesnt fully fill the entire screen.

Ive been trying for hours to find the section that allows me to see what the macbook is putting out while watching youtube videos, I remember someone on this site once showed a section where you can see how much of the cpu your laptop was using watching youtube vids. And thats pretty much it, thanks for any advise on how to use a mac and where to find those areas.

I wasted 10 seconds of time to read this? I am not really impressed.

Update on using a Macbook

Ok so watching a youtube video uses 50% plus of the CPU and watching a flick uses 95% of the CPU forcing the laptop fan to cut on. That isnt a good sign :(

It's bad I know, but it's "normal" for Unix based systems. They just don't work well with Flash video. Ubuntu for example also has the same problem.

It might be true that most of the people never get 100% away from Microsoft Windows and still use Office. But some just need all the feautures for work. I for myself don't need those, that's why I am using the free NeoOffice. (based on OpenOffice) and lot's of students are with me. Though sometimes they ask why not just take Office? Because it's cost money and I don't need all the features? It's again about the better value.

The only Microsoft programm I am using is the MSN Messenger. Because you have to stay connected with your friends of course. I know there are alternativ apps, I tried them all and liked no one. Every app had somethng I disliked.

You can't say that the majority of Mac users are doing this or that because it seems so in this forum. You must still see, that not every Mac user is on this forum. And a majority are the tech interested people here. (Who else would put a Windwos 7 BETA on his computer to try it out? It's not meant for the casual user!)

gixxerredliner next time explain your situation a bit better in the beginning, then you might don't get some the comments above.

And I think you would be better of with the HP. No problems with youtube, should run anything else you wanted and it's cheaper.

I for my just love the Mac OS and that's my selling point.

Mac OS is not for everyone (and that's a good thing) but I think it's good that you at least tried it out!

Most mac users boot into Windows not because they want to but because they have to for some programs or to play some game. I got my first mac one month ago and doesn't look like I will ever go back to windows. Also I hate full screen windows other then for movies. For youtube videos command scroll is nice to zoom in on the video.

I can honestly say that since I switched over to Macs in 2002, I have not had any desire to use Windows. I've never installed Windows on one of my machines, and the only microsoft software I have used is MSN messenger. I did have Office with my first Mac, as I got it for $5 at my University (not illegally) but I ended up disliking the Mac version and only used it once or twice before I discovered OpenOffice.

I really don't think you can say that "most" users do this. As others have said, the people I know who do boot Windows on their Macs do so because there is a specific program they need to use that isn't available for us.

yes Sir!!!!!

Yeah I really do think the macbook is a great device, its just for what I intend to use a laptop for i dont think its the best option for me. What I do like about it though is the overall sexiest of the entire laptop including the software, I just wish it was able to handle youtube and movies online without using 50% to 90% if the cpu sending the macbook into overdrive. But I am glad I had this expierence with the macbook because it was a positive expierence in my eyes.

On a screen that low res, but wide, I keep the dock on the right and webpages full vertical. I do the same on my MBP.

Also, bear in minf that Apple's Command key is basically the same as windows Control key.

For fullscreen if you're using Safari, make a bookmark and use this as the URL:
Code:
javascript:function%20rsz(s,i,w,h,m)%7Bif(i.screenX%3C0%7C%7Ci.outerWidth%3Ew%7C%7Ci.outerHeight%3Eh)%7Bs.moveTo(0,0);s.resizeTo(w,h)%7D;if(m)%7Bs.moveTo(m==1?0:screen.availWidth-w,0);%7D;s.resizeTo(w,h);%7D;rsz(self,window,screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight,1);
I just have a bookmark named "[-]" on the left of my bookmark bar and bam. Fullscreen goodness.

You could also install Glims for safari, which allows you to maximize the window and even go full screen like F11 does for Firefox on Windows.

As for movies, I use Movist which uses a lot less cpu then VLC and QuickTime.

OS X, Windows and Linux all have their own way of doing things and it is good to try them out and decide for yourself what you like the most.
