What you say still doesn't make sense. Apple is not going to produce discs with Lion on it for anyone. If someone buys a Mac with Snow Leopard on it and they are entitled to Lion fro free then they will still probably have to download it from the App store.

The whole idea of releasing it as a download on the App store is to not create discs most likely to cut down on manufacturing and distribution costs. Having a download also makes it easier for them to deploy and make sure the latest version is immediately available to consumers.

Just because it won't be released on a disk doesn't mean it won't be released on a USB drive like the MBA restore was.

That's very unlikely. USB drives cost even more then DVD's. On the MacBook Airs it made sense as they don't come with DVD drives.

No one has definitive proof, but lets use some common sense here. Apple is in the process of loading up thousands and thousands of computers with this GM.

The GM out now is what will be released.

...there's no real reason to release a second GM. There have still been no catastrophic bugs warranting such a thing. Any bugs Lion currently has are minor...

I have to disagree.
The freezes that stefan1975 and I are experiencing are not something I would consider a "minor bug".
It might only affect a small number of people right now, but that's bound to change once Lion is released to the public. My setup is not that exotic (and is exactly the same as on my iMac, which runs Lion without any problems).

But I'm afraid you may be right in that there won't be a GM2 and that 11A511 is actually the build that's going to ship.

Well they probably won't release a GM2 but just update the build number to the latest GM. And that will represent the latest fixes. I can't imagine them not adding little fixes now that will save them releasing a bigger .1 update in the future.

That's why I doubt this GM will be the retail version. Real tempting to install this GM though, just 2 more weeks!:D

My only real worry is whether or not the update process will be fluid from here on out. I'd hate to reinstall everything all over again. Lion is finally working so well for me.

What I'm saying makes a lot of sense, you just happen to disagree. Once Lion is released in the next week we'll all get to find out when people purchase new hardware after the release. For most hardware, I'm betting you will still find a nice grey DVD labeled 10.7.

Is a USB key or DVD even necessary? Lion can be reinstalled easily with the restore partition, and I guess Apple could enable people to order a DVD/USB with Lion on it if need be?

I can't wait either but it will be out soon, so i would wait. there will be less bugs/ headaches and it will be one of those wow moments when it gets released. :)

Less bugs....how? GM will be just the same in a week as it is now...
