I went from 6s Plus to X. At first I missed holding a larger size phone but then found myself getting used to it (I’m 5’4”). But I still missed a larger phone so I thought it was a no-brainer to get the Pro Max.

When I got the Pro Max, it actually felt a bit off. The screen was a great size, but adjusting to the overall phone size was more than I thought in my daily life. Things here and there were starting to add up. After a few days with it I thought I made a mistake.

I went to the Apple store and purchased a Pro size. Everything felt right again. No issues at all since I was already used to the size. But strange thing was after a few days with the Pro size, i started missing the large size again (I know, I’m indecisive). Being back on the Pro size reminded me of why I wanted a larger screen (watch videos, taking lot of photos, draw, etc). So I made the decision to keep the Pro Max and return the Pro.

After using only the Pro Max for a week now, I don’t regret keeping it. I began adjusting to it and getting used to its size in my everyday life. All the things I had issues with it’s size before doesn’t bother me anymore. And something about getting the larger size coming from the X felt more like I got a brand new phone since the front of the screens are still the same.

it helped me a lot to use both and see which one would end up suiting me more. if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have remembered the reasons of why I wanted a larger size and instead would’ve reverted back to what I’m used to. There’s always going to be an adjustment period, so knowing what you want to use it for can help a lot in the decision making.

Thanks for sharing the flipside of the flipside of the coin. :p

I definitely can see myself on your side of the coin now and foreseeable into the future if I brought back this Max right now.

I think this thread is a good thread to show people the many variances of reasons of why one might want a smaller or larger screen.

I’d like to leave my 22 yr old sons thoughts on this as it differs from mine, he owns a Pro. He had also the choice to go up to the Max, he’s an active young adult , he says he couldn’t see himself with the large phone in his pocket while he’s hiking up a mountain, bike riding, socializing, and all the activities that he does outside.

So there you have it, there really is no right or wrong answer it’s all about preference and personal choice.

I have had the large phone since they were available. It wasn’t until this past year that I would say that I was annoyed with the size on various occasions. Usually just a massive brick in my pocket. Trying to remove the larger size when sitting always took and extra amount of effort. Not crazy but enough to be annoying. I decided to go 11 pro this time (Silver which to me is just special this time around). I was torn and actually purchased the Max as well. Went back and forth and just began to realize that with the smaller size I am not missing anything, and the comfort is great. With the Max it always seems like you have to adjust to its size. While I still will miss big screen for video, the smaller size is what I will purchase from now on. Not to mention that I have the indent on my pinkie finger from holding large phones!

Me holding 11 pro

At first, reading all the reviews about the screen size and battery life, I was leaning to get a Pro Max. But one morning a friend showed up with his Pro Max and I got to hold it. Man, Pro Max does feel huge in my hand. I came from 6 plus where the size did really bugged me all the time. Hence I picked 11 pro instead and never been happier with my choice. For reference in the photo below, the smaller hand is mine (;

XS was much easier to hold and handle but the Pro Max is worth it for me due to the extra screen space. I’ve always been a two handed user, regardless of the device size.

Oddly, and this is pure personal observation, I find the Max size feels less unwieldy than the old Plus size.
What do you mean by extra screen space though? I feel like you see the same amount of content , there’s even the same amount of apps on the front screen. Everything is just wider on the max lol

:). That is the biggest negative I'm noticing having gone from 5.8" to 6.5" size. If I want to be able to swipe up with my thumb when I'm holding it one handed then I have to hold it fairly high up in my hand by having it resting on my pinkie finger near the lightning connector otherwise I can't get my thumb down to the bottom edge of the screen to do a one-handed home-button gesture. I'm beginning to get used to it but with the weight of the Pro Max I do notice it.

I'm hoping that Apple might be able to find some way to shed a bit of weight off the 2020 Pro models because that would help not only with pinkie strain. If they go to square iPhone-4/5 like square sides again in 2020 that might also help spread the weight and also give a firmer side-grasp.

I'm still happy with my 2019 choice to go up to the Max size but I'd be very happy if 2020 design changes do improve the convenience of the Max size.

In my case it’s annoying pain at the base of my thumb. At first I was worried I was getting arthritis, but then several of my large-smartphone-using colleagues told me they were experiencing the same thing. Happily the pain has pretty much gone since I’ve been using the normal-sized pro.

I can see why the Max would not work for you. The other hand in that picture
wouldn't have that problem it seems, it’s much larger than yours.

Those of us with (in between) medium hands, will be about preference. I can wield either really. It boils down to the trade offs. Medium hands can hold the Max with a bit of adjusting and acclimating for the pleasure and benefits that comes with larger screen.

I mean the fact that the screen is larger. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest that there isn’t an extra column of apps on the home screen - what matters is that I have a larger screen that makes viewing, reading and typing more comfortable experiences than they were on the 5.8” screen.

I have always had the biggest screen size/phone I could but it is a pain sometimes. When I go out or to a basketball game or dinner or whatever it is sort of a pain to shove this huge thing in my pocket or hold on to it.But for the vast majority of the time I am using the phone I am in an uber or at home or at work and the size is a positive and improves my experience significantly. It's a trade off having to lug around a larger phone but when I take it out to use ti I have always found that trade off worth it.

I had a really hard time choosing between the regular Pro and Max. I'm coming from the smaller 8, and have been using it with one hand only. Today I went to the store to check both models out in person again before making the final decision.

The regular Pro felt really familiar to me. The size of the device is not that different from the smaller 8 - just a bit taller and wider. I could use it one-handedly with confidence. The only time I had to readjust the grip was when I wanted to check the Notification Center. In overall, I consider the 5,8' Pro to be a really comfortable and convenient device to use.

Unfortunately, I had to make my decision more complicated because the screen size of my smaller 8 is not enough for me. I wanted something with a much bigger screen, preferably OLED, to make the jump feel more noticeable.

When I saw the Max, I was amazed how big and beautiful the screen of that size is. I often watch Netflix and YouTube, browse different forums, and read articles on my phone. That 6.5" screen size would make everything so much more enjoyable for me. I was worried about the weight, but after spending nearly 15 minutes with the phone I didn't even notice it that much. The one thing that did make a difference for me was the width of the phone. I use the gesture to go back (swipe from the left edge of the screen to the right) a lot when I'm using my phone. It's so easy for me to do that on my 8 or the regular Pro, but when I tried it on the Max I had to use my second hand. There's no way that my thumb can comfortably reach the left edge of the Max. The only way to do that was to grip the phone in a really insecure manner, and only then was I able to reach the left edge. The keyboard was actually really comfortable to type on - it's wider than on the regular Pro, so I made fewer mistakes when typing.

I've placed an order for the Max, yet I'm still having doubts about the size. I can live with a two-handed use of the Max, but it's hard not to appreciate the perfect size of the regular Pro and the conveniences that come with it.

I was a 6S Plus before I got the 2017 “X” and was ready or planning to go with Max until I realized it is an 8 ounce phone.

I’ve always dabbled in Samsung phones from the days of Note II, 8, and 9 and this year the S10+ which is large but very light. And staying with iPhone X. The 11 is interesting option.

that SE2 could make a nice 2nd phone that is small lite fit and go everywhere and @ $399.
