The iPad fits in between both of thoses devices. I too have MBP and iPhone 4 and I personally believe the iPad is a perfect fit. I use the MBP for heavy duty things like graphics and media editing when I need more power. I like to sit on my couch and browse, shop, etc... Things I use to do on my laptop, except now it's even easier and more comfortable with the iPad. Sure, you can do all that on the iPhone but the screen is small and not really practical for that propose at home. But the iPhone is perfect for when I'm on the go. In a nutshell, you can do without it, but once you try it, you will realize whether it fits for you or not.

I would try it out

I have in iPhone, MacBook pro, and an iPad. I previously had an original iPad. The argument then was oh, it's just a big iPod. The iPad is my go to device for books, browsing, e-mail, etc. If anything my MacBook pro gets used less and less. Now that I have the 4G iPad, I am starting to question whether I would want to upgrade to an iPhone 5 or go down to a basic phone and just have the iPad or just keep my iPhone 4.

I suggest that you use it. You can absolutely return it to apple if it is opened and get a full refund within the firsti 14 days. If you still have doubts, return it, you will get a refund and can always buy it again if you change your mind.

Research.
Debate needs.
Weigh pros/cons.
Analyze budget.
Think.
Purchase.

Follow this sequence and you seldom have buyer's remorse.

Actually, research tends to disagree. Interestingly enough, the more choices you have and the more time you spend researching all of your options, the less happy you ultimately are with your final decision. I kind of agree, but I just can't stop myself from researching products to death and obsessing about all the options before making a choice.

Thank you for mentioning this. It's very interesting because it could have been written for me. I research all my electronics to death and then spend days/weeks second-guessing my purchases. It's been my personal experience that friends and family members who are generally impulse buyers are more satisfied and seldom return anything. I wish I were more like them.

Yes, please keep us posted as to whether in a few days you find you cannot live without your new iPad.

Nope, genuinely asking. I really thought I'd love it but there are things i still need my mbp for and on the move I'll always have my iphone.

Can I still take it back to apple if I've opened it? that's partly why I haven't, I assumed it would have to be returned unopened.

Open it and try it for a couple of days. Apple will give full return on opened, undamaged unit when/if you affirm to yourself that you don't want, need, or use it. I remember my husband got me first gen iPad as a b-day gift despite my protests that I didnt need/ wouldn't use it. Boy was I wrong! Now I'd say it gets 90% daily use to my MBP's 10%!

Some people have too much money. More so than sense! Come on man. If you in your head know you dont need it or have a use for it. Why purchase it. I've never understood this.

Go on open it, you know you WANT to :)

voice #2: No, better return it, it's costly and I don't REALLY need it.

voice #1: You weakling, grow a pair: GO FOR IT :D

voice #1: Hey voice #1 your turning me on with that sassy talk :)

OP, I'm finding this whole thread a bit odd. When questioned about why you'd buy such an expensive item when you were so unsure about whether or not you could use it, you said money wasn't the issue. But part of your reluctance to even try the thing is because you found out later that the apps you wanted to see on the larger screen weren't universal, so you'd have to "shell out again" for the iPad version. Spend $500 plus with nary a thought, and then be peeved because you are going to have to buy a $1.99 app over again?

Part of your reasoning for going ahead with the purchase is because Apple has an excellent return policy, yet, you had to ask here if you could return it after opening it (this being your reason for not opening it yet).

Weird. Just weird. At any rate, the ONLY way you will know if you are going to get any use out of your alleged purchase is to... use it.

My husband and I both travel a lot and not always together. Last year I bought myself an iPad because I was tired of lugging a laptop around when all I needed was email, some simple docs and some light entertainment.

When my husband got a new contract in Istanbul I bought him an iPad also. He comes home every three months or so (or I go over there) and I thought it would be easier for him too. Well, he didn't want it, his laptop wasn't THAT much trouble, yada, yada, yada... But I set up FaceTime and Skype and he took it anyway, just to keep me happy. Well, fast forward a year later and you couldn't pry it out of his hands. He never travels with his laptop any more, just his iPad and a memory stick for files he puts on our computer here if he needs to do any work.

Fair point, I'd not thought of it like that. Guess I was just a bit pissed I couldn't easily try ipad versions of the apps I use a lot on my iphone. Also, some of the better games are more like $10, not $2. I don't think I've ever spent more than $4 on an app before so it'll take a bit of getting used to. I might just be being tight here.

I'm not sure it's that weird that I didn't know if I could open it. The situation I was trying to avoid was seeing one instore and loving it, only to find out that I couldn't get one for another month! that's what happened to me with the iphone 4.

So anyway, I rang apple and as a few people pointed out, taking it back opened within 14 days is totally fine, in fact they encourage you to try the product out.

I opened it and I've used it for a few nights. I'll have more of a play over the coming weekend, especially as I'm going away so will have chance to try travelling with it instead of my MBP. Although I have to say, I'm tempted to take it anyway as there are vids that won't play natively on the ipad that I want to watch. I can convert them but that's a pain in the ass.

at the minute I'm inclined to return it. I like the screen, it looks great and noticeably better than the ipad2 but.. not quite as good as my 4s. I guess my eyes are used to retina so it doesn't have quite the 'wow' factor. 1080p videos do look amazing though, especially a couple of snowboarding films I stuck on there.

I was surprised by how heavy I found it and after an hour or so's use, I'm definitely getting a bit of an ache in my arm. Again, I expect I'd get used to that.

I have a new kindle and there is no way I could read books on this thing, the glare get's my eyes way too much. in that respect, the kindle wins hands down. one area where I think I could be tempted into keeping it is iTunes U, there is so much stuff on there that interests me. Some of the interactive learning that I imagine is coming could be ground breaking.

I find the keyboard massive. I mean, I feel like it's designed for sausage fingers. couldn't they make it a bit smaller and easier to type with? some of the idioms are different to the iphone which catches me out a bit too.

nothing major either way but I guess that's the problem and not exactly a ringing endorsement for keeping it. I'll update the thread next week when I decide what to do.

cheers
Matt

So it was decision time today.

I decided to send it back.

It's a lovely device but it can't replace my laptop and I have my 4S for tinterweb on the go.. as much as I would use it, I don't think I'd use it enough to justify the money. I think I'd rather spend it on something else.

thanks for all your replies and I hope you all have fun with yours!

Matt

The problem is you only have 2 days left in the return period once you open. If you think its for you return it and get another one so you have 14 days.

umm... he already returned it, as stated in a post 4 hours before yours, nice observational skills there.

And who are these people that drop $500+ on something they have no idea about? I make a very good living and I still evaluate every purchase carefully before I buy. I can't imagine picking up a $500 device and then trying to figure out if I want to keep it.

Unfortunately, you see a lot of people that just decide to buy something because it's "new" or "better" then its predecessor rather than truly taking the time to decide if it's a good fit for them.

I was one of the many who picked up a new iPad on launch day, but I did not decide to buy one until the night before. I spent the time between the announcement and the launch reading up on the specs and the early reviews that came out to see if the new iPad lived up to its potential or not. In the end, I saw myself using the new iPad a lot more, mainly because of the higher resolution and the new iPhoto app. While I still use it for that, I actually find myself using it for a lot of the tasks I used my iPhone 4S for previously.
