...Computers always get better, so it's no use freaking out about it. They're still great machines. We're just victims of an industry that convinces us we need the latest and greatest.
Tell me about it. I switched to mac in '03 in the last couple of years of the PPC era. In 12-18 months, the g4 chips would jump to 1.33 to 1.5 or 1.67 ghz; it was a lot easier to say 'meh' and keep using your 'old' machine.
Besides the lack of malware for the platform, the absence of the forced wintel upgrade cycle was a strong motivator to switch. I knew a couple of old mac hands who were contentedly using 3-4 year old machines to make a living, with nary a thought of upgrading. One guy was using os9 programs in '07! They've since moved on to intels after their PPC's broke out of warranty.
I like the power and features on intel macs, don't get me wrong. It's just the switch to intel, influx of former wintel users and the constant cycle of upgrades has transplanted the forced upgrade mentality to the platform. The constant stream of 'OMG! Should I sell my four month old MBP and buy a...?' threads on this forum attests to this.
I wouldn't mind a slightly faster processor, nicer screen, longer battery, sd card slot and firewire, don't get me wrong. If my 2.4 ce mb dies tomorrow and applecare offers me a 13" 2.53 mbp, I'd take it. I just see no need to take a $2-400 dollar loss on selling my old machine (which works well for me at this time) and buying the new systems for that purpose. If apple comes out with quad core machines with new features in the next year, it would have to be pretty amazing to get me to even think about giving up this machine. As long as it does what I need it to do, I'll keep using it.
I'll even say this: If my machine breaks past it's extended applecare, I may even look at apple's competitors. Windows 7 is supposed to be secure, stable and not too user unfriendly. If the other side of the fence offers a secure OS with more consumer choice in components and features at a lower price point, I'd consider it. Mac is my OS, not my religion.
Heck, I'll even go a step further and say that I hope win 7 is a success for MS. Competition is always good for consumers. If apple thinks that the new OS could stem the tide of buyers running into the apple store, it will innovate extra hard on features, products and price. IMO, they've gotten a bit of a free ride during the last few years from xp's malware and vista's compatibility issues.
