As an existing Notability customer, I cannot figure out how to download the Mac (Big Sur) version for free. I'm logged into the Mac App Store (US) correctly, but am prompted to purchase the Mac version of Notability. I've browsed Ginger Labs' website (including support section for the Mac), but cannot find any indication that the Mac app is free for existing customers.
I took the risk and click on the app recommended to "purchase". Just click on purchase even if you see a price and proceed. At the end you will have a pop up from the Store telling you as you have previously purchased the app you would not be charged.

I have used Notability on iPad and MacOS for a long time, and love it on both! I will be trying out the Sidecar support today, I cannot wait for this!

Just to reiterate to others that it is free if you had it before, you just have to get the nerve to click on the BUY button, enter your Apple ID user and pw, then it DID say the update was free and downloaded it.
Wheew, I thought I was going to get charged. It's safe though and I didn't.

Thanks, it worked for me.

I’m happy to pay a few bucks for a great app. I want them to be rewarded for big updates like this and be able to pay their employees. I expect small maintenance updates to be free, but I have no problem paying for large updates like this. Especially when the initial investment in the program was so low.

I really don’t understand why everyone seems to be stressing so much about whether this app, that only cost a few dollars, is free for existing users. I know that money doesn’t grow on trees, but that’s the exact reason why any Mac user who cares about good software should feel great about paying a few bucks to an earnest developer who invests their employees’ time and effort into a major and much needed upgrade. Too many people these days think that everything should be “free”. Of course incremental updates should be free. But at a certain point, when developers no longer have any profit motivation, they’re just going to abandon apps. This happens all the time. And it sucks for everyone. So when there’s an app that’s not very expensive to begin with, and they then make a major upgrade, pay them for God’s sake. There is no free lunch. You get what you pay for. Pay for what is important to you.

From my perspective, this Mac app update is long overdue. It’s not just that there hasn’t been feature parity between platforms on Notability, but the Mac app has been considerably less reliable than the iOS version. There have been all sorts of syncing problems, resulting in loss of notes and data for a lot of users. I basically stopped using the Mac app a few months ago, so I’m excited to bring it back into my workflow.

I'd have paid the $4 so I wasn't concerned, but my issue is with how poor the App Store upgrade experience is. A user has to click through 2 different dialogs which tell them that they will be charged before they discover that there actually is no charge. Apple is putting up barriers to users and making the experience worse, and furthermore increases the support load for the developer who now has to answer lots of questions about why the update isn't actually free.

Something important to mention for anyone updating:

1. When you click buy for $3.99 it will prompt you to enter Apple ID and password.
2. After it will say that your payment on file will be charged immediately; continue.
3. Then you will get promted with a message that will say “this update is free since you own a previous
version of this item”
4. After clicking OK the download will begin.

AND YES IT IS FREE! Finally ! Needed this update.

That’s a totally valid criticism. I hate when Apple confuses “simple” with good. Way too often, their software is so “simple” it feels unfinished, and that fake simplicity makes things harder for the user. The word “simplicity” should be replaced in all Apple employee and procedural manuals with “easy” and “intuitive”.

For the people who were concerned about high CPU usage: I am almost certainly sure this is due to initial note indexing (for search) that happens locally. When all notes are indexed CPU usage should go down.
How long will that take? I don't want my battery life to drain otherwise I rather use the old app

I am trying this out now, as I would need to do online presentations with both coding (so it needs to be on Mac) and sketching (so pencil support would be great).
It kinds of works but not super well. When I draw with the pencil there is some vertical offset between the position of the pencil and the location where it actually writes. Anybody else tried ? Anyone noticed this ? Any idea how to fix it ?
