You are so dense. You ARE losing a part of the menu bar. That’s what he’s saying. Get it? The menu bar used to go all the way across, now it does not. How the OS will handle an app with a lot of menu bar options, I guess we shall see. But you are definitely losing part of the menu bar. If it has to put some of the menu bar options to the right of the notch, things seem like they could get messy.

Also they did a terrible job with the menu bar and the notch. Why on earth does the menu bar extend a little below the bottom of the notch? It looks like they missed that, I hope it’s not intentional.
Nope, I’m just disagreeing with him. You’re not losing the menubar, you’re losing part of it, perhaps. So in the small segment of apps that have that many menu items they’ll have to - *shock horror* - spilt across the gap.

In exchange for that we finally get a proper webcam (vital in today’s working environment for most) and additional screen real estate for actualwork.

If the notch is enough reason for you not to buy one of these machines, then honestly you almost certainly didn’t need one anyway.

I already bought one, I’m just not going to pretend it’s a good design, it’s by far my least favorite thing about it. All the positives outweigh it, but I’m not going to pretend that this was the only way to put a better webcam in there, or that it’s better than not having the notch.

No, I understand--you get extra space for window chrome with the notch, but that notch still doesn't come free. You're getting that extra desktop space at the expense of the menu bar--what you often use to perform actual functions within your apps. It isn't some unimportant element you can just simply move up and out of the way. For some people, that's a deal-breaker. You've got to understand that.
They just don't understand.
Do you think Apple will reduce the notch size next year? Or will allow apps to wraps around it?

Genuinely curious - can you point me in the direction of a laptop that puts a similar quality camera into a bezel the size that the MBP one would have been without a notch?

No, I only use macs so I have no idea. But I think it would have been a better idea to just leave the webcam out of the way of the screen with a slightly wider bezel, or even a hole punch would be less of an eyesore. Or a smaller notch?? Talk about wasted space. The biggest waste of space is that huge notch with one little camera lens hole in the middle.

Couldn’t care less. Its just poor design to cut into the screen like that. I’m sure there are people at Apple who agree with me but were silenced. Eventually they’ll ditch the notch and call it an innovation.

Proper web cam…. Well thats open for debate and interpretation. We went from a 720 to a 1080 while the most basic iPad has a 12mp camera that follows the user. Again the most basic iPad had that feature. If they came out with Face ID i can see the need for the notch, we know Face ID is coming, its like lazy planning at this point for a 3000+ machine.

Nice, got a screenshot?
Basically just a black menubar. Monterey's still pretty glitchy and buggy though; like when I take a screenshot, the wallpaper no longer becomes stretched to screen.

TopNotch also lets you select if you want rounded screen corners as well
