If a TV ever came out with a notch that blocks part of the picture there would be riots in the streets. Ok ok not really, because there are over 20 major TV manufacturers. But seriously it's terrible on a phone.

They should have just put black bars at all times and called it a day. Safari looks even more ridiculous btw (with white bars, lol).

Even one of the pictures they have on their own website show part of the buttons being blocked by the silly notch (see image below). There's a reason why symmetry matters.

Let's not forget, it's $300 more for this experience.

curious to see how a youtube video will look since there's no zoom out feature. (at least i haven't seen one on the app). along with facebook and twitter.

Well i define it as an unwelcome surprise. I never dreamt Apple would implement something so horrible into one of their phones

True. I thought Apple would have at least made it symmetrical and put a notch on the bottom perhaps use that as a microphone/speaker or small ovalish home button similar to the Samsung galaxies.

But yeah the rumors for the last couple of months showed a notch as a possibility before it was leaked to be true and thus isn’t a “gate” unless if it affects functionality of the device like antennagate or bendgate did by causing issues with the sensors while pressed to your ear or a tinny speaker or something.

These dumb things always are forgotten for me within a few days of using the device. If it really annoys you that badly then just dont focus on it.

I think the definition of a gate is less something that affects the device, but more something that is a SCANDALOUS SCANDAL! Like Apple knowing the antenna thing affected calls. They haven't hidden the notch.

Its more like an obvious thing that's everywhere that you decide to want to ignore. Like Kanye.

Notchye?

Yeah I don't know if I could qualify it as a scandal to deserve the term gate being latched onto it but there are some definite design issues with it that I think people can certainly discuss.

Bingo. It actually looks horrible everywhere you’re trying to look at content.

I’m baffled at how so many people think this is perfectly OK. And it’s a complete joke that Apple is trying to pass this off as some kind of feature.
Some apple fans needs to convience themselves it's good so they can get the phone

Like most have said they should have put a black bar top and bottom, it's not to bad in portrait, even if the aspect ratio is not 16:9 it would still have looked better, if you look at the notch it's only about 1/3 the size of bezels on the iPhone 7plus, I think apple could have come on stage said that when you use the phone in portrait, it's full screen and when using the phone in landscape mode we have reduced the bezels by 66%, and gotten away with it!

. It's not a gate if it was Apple's intention all along. They consciously decided on having the little notch on top to house all the sensors. I can't believe how everyone is flipping out about it. I actually think it's cool looking.

Just thought of a pretty bad situation of when expanding to full screen whilst watching football (soccer) or many other sports that have goals at each end of the ground - depending on how you hold the X in landscape whilst watching the sports, one goal will be covered up by the notch for some/much of the game, so you'll miss the goal being scored.

Actually, if it's viewed in full screen, it'll mean the whole thing is cropped (on both sides), so you may not be able to see both goals.

So, in these cases, you'd need to de-crop the video & watch in original aspect ratio.

And there are some who want the iPhone X, but they will bash it so it seems it's not a sought after device that nobody else would want because they don't like it.

Don't know about that..the notch is already widely known, heck we've seen the leaks, designs for a few months and confirmed on 9/12 Those who want it, know the notch and accept the notch..

The "Gate" would be after these ship and the OLED becomes unresponsive, (OLEDgate) the Facial ID really does fail for some locking them out of the devices. Might not recognize them, prompting them to enter pin every time. (FaceGate) Augmented Reality fail. (ARgate) Wireless charge doesn't work (QIgate).

For both phones...maybe Glass back suffers unexplained shattering for no reason, or battery/ phone heats up to the point it cracks the glass (GlassGate) Eh, that last one is a scary thought actually.

Gonna stay put until next year, the 7+ 128GB has been serving me well.

Ya doing same thing with same device, 2 many compromises, it's really the notch I could not live with it, the price is to much as well, the thing that's worrying though is every flagship is going with the long screens now, which I don't like or understand, nearly 95% of content is recorded and viewed in 16:9 and it ends up looking awful watching video on these aspect ratios

1st picture's a good example of how intrusive it can be.

2nd picture's how original aspect ration looks on all phones - you're going to have a border due to the resolution on these devices not lining up with 16:6 or whatever aspect ration the film was shot in.

But that 1st picture's the problem - is there a screenshot of that game not in full screen? Because that's how i'd be playing it, as well as watching pretty much all video content (bar some YouTube videos, where the notch won't block anything important).

It was the same with the original iPhone. It's why manufacturers have always had issues trying to come up with a happy medium when it comes to mobile phone dimensions.

Felt like having a scotch when I seen the notch, what a botch

Yes true, but the reason they changed to 16:9 was cause it was main stream and was standard and still is, there was no need to change it

In fairness if they had kept the 5.5 screen size of the plus, changed to oled, taken 1-2 mm off side bezels and had much slimmer top/bottom bezels and had the back design of X it would have been a huge improvement and would have please alot more and gained more customers

there's going to be alot more of this, lol

How is that a less than stellar experience for the the video screenshot image? You do realize that most films are actually in that aspect ratio right? That’s like calling a LG 77” OLED 4K tv a less than stellar experience too because it also would have the top and bottom blacked out to fit the proper aspect ration into a 16:9 ratio panel.

"We had the courage to design a notch that seamlessly integrates itself into your life. Into your games. Into your videos. Delightfully simple, robustly realized... simply put, the finest notch we have ever made."
- Jony Ive

The notch does not affect videos one bit unless the user intentionally zooms in to make it “full screen”. And even in that case you’d be missing out on content regardless of a notch or not, because zooming in would crop the image alone.
