What I find interesting is some games and apps display actual text at the top. Like a characters health bar for example. I bet there is a whole bunch of apps that if you currently booted on iPhone X without update, wouldn't even be usable because of the notch blocking vital information.

It's there. You don't have to buy it.

The windscreen example is perfect. The notch exists because it contains a function. Apple felt that by using the available space to the left and right of the notch, that it could be of value, instead of blacking it out.

Let this happen and if it's not working, a software update can take care of it. But it needs some innovative opportunities to make sure it's worth the effort.

1. The black bars created when watching a video or photos in landscape mode are thinner than the bezels on any other iPhone.

2. Most of us don't spent more than a fraction of our time watching videos in landscape mode. For the rest of the time and while doing anything vertically, the screen is bigger and more functional than any other iPhone.

3. The screen is also better in terms of quality than any other iPhone.

All this comes down to is whether Plus owners would prefer to see more content in landscape but on their inferior screens.

Notch/PermaTurd was a deal breaker for me!

I waited 10 years for the ultimate gizmo and the notch sank my ship! Will be getting the 8+. Im still using the 6+ which these clowns gave 1 gig of ram which gives me constant page reloads and cant watch youtube in landscape without crashing.

Now I have to cough up 1 grand for 2 extra gigs of ram! For godsakes reanimate Jobs to replace these bunch of clowns!

How inferior is the screen then exactly? I’d take a top line Apple LCD any day over an OLED panel that is less ppi and nits than a 3 year old Samsung device that displays a higher resolution than the X.

Top 5 Apple gates!

At #5 we have scuff-gate. The iPhone 5's complete redesign looked amazing at the keynote, but customers quickly found that this phone was very scuff and scratch-able. People found scratches at unboxing and after merely hours of use. Many angry macrumors customers returned their phones several times in disgust.

At # 4 we have Siri-gate. Brand new to the iPhone 4S and taking the world by excitement was the announcement of Siri, your new phone personal assistant. I've never seen so many people excited about a feature that was still in Beta, unpolished, and completely laggy at launch.

Coming in at #3 we have notchgate. Apple's "one more thing" super re-design launch focuses on iPhone X, which stands for 10, leaving iPhone 9 somewhere out in the mirror-universe. The controversial notch at the top of the phone leaves customers confused about its function and screen-blocking qualities. Although fanboys insist we will all get used to it.

At #2 we have the infamous bend-gate with iPhone 6! Quite soon after people got their brand new iPhone 6 and 6 plus in their pockets, they got bent! Looks like Foxconn was using some metal from the mirror universe. Sending a shockwave of YouTube bend videos and customer complaints rabid, Apple addressed the issues in the 6s.

And the top Apple gate is....... Antenna-gate! The iPhone 4 antennagate scandal gets the top spot simply because mr. Jobs himself addressed the issue in an additional keynote address. His response was one for the history books as he literally brought in competitors' phones and demonstrated the same drawback by gripping he phone tightly to prevent signal. This panicked response was met by many as an admission of a flaw that so many people were unhappy about. Not to mention the white iPhone 4 was delayed after it was announced; this was not a good year for Apple.

How could you forget chipgate? Tsmc versus samsung

For me the notch has to be number 1. It was something consciously added by Apple, that doesn't need to be there.
They should have found another way to engineer face ID into the phone, without the notch.

So Apple chose to use two processor suppliers unconsciously?
[doublepost=1505557774][/doublepost]To the OP - it seems like everyone who is complaining thinks their view of technology and how it should be built, sold and everything in between is the only view. This happens every year. "I won't be getting the next iphone" is seen every year. Sure some might leave. They might be happy with a Samsung or HTC. But often, people realize that the grass isn't always greener. And often, people realize that their qualms are overblown.

The truth is, Apple is almost a trillion dollar company. There's a reason for that. I bet the animojis are going to be a runaway hit amongst the younger crowd.

Please don't speak for "most of us", nobody elected you. I use my Plus in landscape over half the time.

And the "X" screen is smaller vertically when in landscape than the Plus screens. Not to mention the notch, which negates any superiority, full stop.

People are starting to get defensive now. Uglyness of this place never fails to shine through.

Apple users v Apple users..........the web, where conflicts MUST happen....

Is the notch this years gate?
the products aren't even out yet, how about "we don't know yet" gate? My guess is probably battery gate as Apple hasn't specified exactly how many hours or charging-gate since it is the first time having charging wireless ability.

For the last time, the notch is part of the design. Everyone knows it's there. Therefore it's not a surprise that you're finding out about after purchase and not a "gate".

This is a pretty stupid discussion. If you don't like the notch, don't buy the phone. Problem solved.

Thanks for the reminder lol

Well maybe it's for the better. I really shouldn't spending half a day entertaining the people on this forum. And myself, I'll admit it. :D

The sad thing is the notch will soon be forgotten and accepted.

Apple don't seem to be changing their iphone designs very often lately. So i predict we will have notch designed phones for at least 2-3 years ; if you want an oled screen. Sad
